Yes, this is mostly symbolic, but I think there are other, more important issues that I wish the President would focus on before he tries to fix college sports, which has been crooked since almost the beginning. President Trump Signs Executive Order Targeting 'Illegal' NIL Payments, Seeks To Limit Number Of Transfers Some of the key topics included in the new order try to curtail NIL collectives, along with allowing players to have five years to play five seasons. But, one of the most drastic changes was the committee who helped write this executive order helping implement a change to the transfer process. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Happy Easter, all. Completely by happenstance, I recently discovered a sub-genre of pop music known as Beach Music. I guess it was quite popular along the Eastern seaboard in the late 60's and early 70's. One if the most successful groups was Bill Deal and The Rondels. Being a fan of harmonies, I really took to their sound and style. Check out the drummer/vocalist Ammon Tharp. Dude has a set of pipes. For what it's worth, here's a little sample medley of three of their hits. Warning: the quality is not great.

I've always liked small combo jazz: Brubeck, Vince Guaraldi, Diana Krall, etc. Recently found a channel on YT, Dhara Jazz. Bass, guitar, drums and one female vocalist who actually sounds like a mature woman, not Minnie Mouse. Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at April 04, 2026 08:28 PM (h7ZuX) This will give you a good start: https://tinyurl.com/3dn5j2w5 But 60s beach music was a bit different from that of the 70s. It was more similar to the crooner stylings of the 50s, while 70s beach started to sound more modern. The beat of the songs and the shag dance is what held them together. Woke up the other morning with the earworm "Please don't let me be misunderstood" and ended up searching for versions on YooToob. I found Nina Simome - almost kinda good https://youtu.be/JS8LWRCS6do Cindy Lauper Live - why do women always try too hard? https://youtu.be/-XvHy4PY_dg Santa Esmeralda, the unbuttoned disco version https://youtu.be/uvXeeus94GY Ozzy Osbourne unreleased track - I see why https://youtu.be/ASHuUC3DJAc Yusuf / old Cat Stevens - he did have a good voice, but https://youtu.be/qXL0ow4-sR0 Some of those mess with the pacing. Some mess with the simple lyrics: "Life has it's problems and I've got my share" fits with the "like any other one" and "I'm just a man" theme. Making it "I've got MORE THAN my share" is just hoobris or something. Nope nope nope. So… Eric Burdon and the Animals - still the best version https://youtu.be/YMDrTMnm1IE Posted by: mindful webworker - with a joy that's hard to hide at April 04, 2026 08:56 PM (/rhF0) Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at April 04, 2026 08:56 PM (zZu0s) Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at April 04, 2026 08:56 PM (f0sNM) Posted by: BarelyScaryMary at April 04, 2026 08:58 PM (FrGmf) 109

Yacht rock makes me think of Christopher Cross. -- BarelyScaryMary
This is a plot point of that Substance parallel show, "The Beauty". Cross was, as you may know (or, if over 29, remember) big. Sold platinum. Even I remember hearing a lot of his stuff on the radio although as a very young boy I didn't much like it. Then Cross vanished. Poof! I didn't hear any more of his songs. And his older songs got shifted over to the fossil stations. "A thousand thousand slimy things lived on, and so did [he]." "The Beauty" suggests that was because he showed up on TV to sing his own stuff and he was short and ugly. The young(ish) women watching would rather watch George Michael. I imagine there are sub genres of Polka music too.
I mean, The Shmenges are not the same as Frank Yankovic and His Yanks. Grok says: Slavic Styles (Polish-American, Chicago Style and Eastern Style). Slovenian-American Polka (often called Cleveland Style) Frankie Yankovic is the biggest name here. Cleveland has long been called "America’s Polka Capital." Czech-American Polka (including Czexan or Texas Czech style): Found in rural Midwest and especially Texas/Nebraska. Germanic Styles: also called Dutchman Style or "Oompah". Southwestern Styles: Mexican-American Polka, Papago-Pima Polka: A Native American variation in the Southwest with unique adaptations. I'll bet. What's Jimmy Buffet music?
Posted by: Harry Vandenburg at April 04, 2026 09:00 PM (V4IXI) Drunk Caribean Rock and Roll. Posted by: Reforger For some bizarre reason the have named A1A (in Florida) the Jimmy Buffet Memorial Highway. I know the guy had like two songs and there are some bars around here that play them in an endless loop... even worse with a Jimmy Buffet Memorial Band. Thx CBD. Evening all.
Forbert's Jackrabbit Slim is a good bit of music. Still have album but no turntable. Posted by: Smell the Glove +++ I thought Forbert was going to be a huge success. I loved his music back in the day. I guess you never know. Posted by: Florida Peasant at April 04, 2026 09:49 PM (Lo97M) 177

Come Monday was an OK Jimmy Buffett song.
If I hear Margarritaville again, I'll stab someone. That is one painful ass song. There'll be a woman to blame. I'll own it. Posted by: BarelyScaryMary at April 04, 2026 09:50 PM (FrGmf) 179

162 ... "How big can a jazz combo be and still be a small combo? Add keyboards and four saxophones to the guitar/bass/drums?"
I usually think of small combo as no more than five. Percussion, guitar, bass, keyboard, maybe a sax. (I grew up hearing Dave Brubeck.) Some songs might add a flute. Thinking of Van Morrison's Moondance or Herbie Mann. Just my opinion based on nothing official. Posted by: JTB at April 04, 2026 09:55 PM (yTvNw) 185

Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher +++ Kinda makes sense. You can walk into pretty much any bar with live music anywhere up and down A1A and pretty soon you're gonna hear a Jimmy Buffet song. Posted by: Florida Peasant at April 04, 2026 09:56 PM (Lo97M) 186
Don't know about this 'biscuits and gravy'. It sounds kind of spartan. But 29 years ago my Army unit's mess hall had a great breakfast - you could get an omelet, some meats on the side, fried potatoes and onions, and a biscuit or two, and drown the whole thing with sausage gravy. 95 cents.

Our youngest grandkid, she's 8, is learning Beethoven's "Fur Elise." A great performer, with a pitch-perfect voice, we ran "Some Like It Hot" on the screen when she was with us last week so she could see Marilyn's moves. Her name's Marilyn.

Jimmy Buffett is a mixed bag for me. His parrot head 'popular' songs can be playful and fun but not played endlessly. His softer, ballad style songs like "Son of A Son of a Sailor" have an emotional side that is appealing. I despise the drunken/stoned fans who make his concerts into Animal House on spring break.

You gotta admit "livin' on sponge cake" is a great opening lyric.
"On a dark desert highway" is pretty good, too, but that ain't Buffet. Then there's "I've been warped by the rain," maybe my all-time favorite. Posted by: M. Gaga at April 04, 2026 10:08 PM (KiBMU) Posted by: Buffet Wisdom at April 04, 2026 10:31 PM (2Ez/1) 200

I've live pretty much my whole life within a couple blocks or a few miles of A1A and I don't mind it. You even develop some kind of immunity to the music too.
I'm not a "Parrot Head" buy I am proud of my Florida Beachtown heritage. There are far worse things and places to be associated with. Posted by: pawn at April 05, 2026 03:14 AM (jstR0) 202
I have an old musical acquaintance I've known since college days that actually gigs pretty steady with a polka wedding band. They are out of Toledo.
