Hobby Thread - April 4, 2026 [TRex]

April42026.IMG_20260331_141402127.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. It is that time of the year, a spin of the Wheel of Hobbies (TM) naturally came up with Easter as a theme for this Hobby Thread.

[Top photo: Buc-ee's Bunny]

***

What are you hobbying?

As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. All (legal) hobbying is welcome. I understand that some people pay attention to military hardware, tactics and strategy as a hobby. Discussion of current military events permitted but must be made in the form of hobby commentary. Pants are optional. As always, puns are welcome and encouraged.

Play nice and do not be rude. Do not be a troll and do not feed the trolls.

***

Didn't we do an Easter themed Hobby Thread last year at this time? Yes, yes we did. It was fun. Anyway...

Easter bunnies, baskets, eggs, chicks, etc. So many crafting possibilities. Let's talk about all of them. Any Easter projects this year? Any favorites from years past? Are you wise in the ways of Peter Cottontail?

Going to need help from the gray boxes on this one. Dinos did not have a prominent role in most scriptural accounts of the resurrection story (kind of like the nativity story). Must have gotten lost in the translations along the way. We're also a little clumsy at times which makes for perilous times if you are a bunny or a chick. A dino has to know its limits.

We'll do an origami theme at some point, but couldn't resist including here:

***

Does anyone raise chickens and hatch chicks for a hobby? I had wondered about doing a chicken theme but thought it might be too narrow.

This is fancy chicken coop build.

This is chick hatching on a large scale. Not a hobby, but hobbyists might be customers.

***

This guy keeps outdoing himself. Great project and result. Even more impressive to make it out of pallet wood. Pallets are the wooden version of legos. With a little creativity and labor, they can be made into almost anything.

***

Did you miss the Hobby Thread last week? We did a singing theme. The comments may be closed, but you can re-live the content.

8 I have a hobby question somewhat topical that has been bugging me all day.

I know that some of you enjoy studying the heavens, and likely have a nice telescope as well with the knowledge that comes from using one. So you might be able to answer this.

With all the advances in technology over the decades, is there a commercial/ scientific telescope that is capable of viewing the Artemis Mission in real time? I would think that this is currently achievable, and I'm a bit surprised that the media hasn't taken advantage of it (unless they are trying to play down achievements...which is possible). Clear night; massive state of the art telescope; I would think we could peek in on Artemis any time we wanted. But, no media efforts or YouTube channels seem to be doing it.

Oh, I did end up making the deviled eggs in the rice cooker. Pretty darn good. Did not use bacon as the recipe I tried for oven cooking the bacon gave me carbon- except for one piece which I ate.

So just:
Eggs
Kens Buttermilk Ranch
French's Mustard
Smoked Paprika (which was really tasty.)

11 Aetius, how did you cook the bacon in the oven that it turned to carbon? My recipe is 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Check and turn after that. It takes 25-30 minutes and is yum. I use thick cut bacon.

12 EEEEEaster!

Our family when I was growing up had no religious affiliation at all. (Though Mom did once suggest Sunday School, and you'd have thought she'd spoken of swallowing rat poison or broccoli. "School?!? SIX DAYS a week?!?" was our reaction.) So our Easter was pretty much painting the hardboiled eggs and snacking on various kinds of chocolate.

There was a time in America when Easter was the holiday where men and women, and their children, got new outfits -- the men new suits or a new hat, the women dresses or frocks, the boys their first suit, etc. Again, the renewal theme, I guess. Now I suppose, if the old custom is observed at all, it's new running shoes or a new T-shirt. Maybe it's different where you are.

13 As for pipe smoking, nothing new at Chez Wolfus since the purchase of the very nice Marxman straight smooth pot-bowl pipe from the '50s.

I've gone back to trying the "spiral" method of loading one's pipe. That is, you put the leaf in the palm of your off hand, invert the pipe, and "swirl" it around in a spiral fashion to push the tobacco up into the bowl. The idea is that it will be fairly evenly distributed but not tightly packed in there, and will burn evenly. The method doesn't always work for me, but then the whole pipe smoking thing is a journey, and every session is a little different. Recall Ian Malcolm's lecture about chaos in Jurassic Park.

14 Easter in ND was often too cold for outdoor egg/candy hunts. My mom bought easter candy and hit it around the house. I don't remember easter as a new clothes event, perhaps we did get new dresses for easter services when I was younger and I just don't recall.

22 No Easter activities like baskets, egg hunts, etc., as we don't have any little ones nearby. As a kid Easter, aside from the church aspects, was a fun time. Wake up to an Easter basket under the bed filled with fake grass and candy. Easter mass. Hunt for eggs later and a big family meal. Our town still did an Easter parade where new clothes were worn. We kids played and our parents spent most of the time trying to keep us from getting the new clothes dirty. Sometimes it worked.

Not a hobby, of course, but ancient tradition.

24 Svengoolie's movie tonight is An American Werewolf in London. Hardly Easter-themed, but then The Ten Commandments, which always pops up on broadcast TV at this time, isn't really either. Passover, yes, but not an Easter theme per se. You'd think they'd run The Greatest Story Ever Told or King of Kings instead.

Color, real color, epic scenes, great performances from Heston, Brynner, Anne Baxter, and Edward G. Robinson, plus Vincent Price. My man Robert Vaughn had a non-speaking role in it. He said John Derek didn't want anybody in his scenes who looked like him, so the young Vaughn, who resembled JD quite a bit, was kept off camera whenever Derek was on.

40 This is kind of a funny...

Two days ago I went up on our roof to survey wind damage from some storms. We've had some pretty high winds.. 40+ MPH. It tore off some shingles... not many, but some.

I grabbed a ladder and went up to attempt some repairs.

The wind blew my ladder down.

I spent about 2 - 21/2 hours up there before my wife came home.

49 >> scientific telescope that is capable of viewing the Artemis Mission in real time?

You can see it if it's close enough, like LEO distance. Some may have done that. But now, it's a dust speck pushing 180,000 miles away.

This outfit here claimed to have imaged the separation of Orion from the upper stage at 30,000 miles here:
https://is.gd/78xQtv

That's crazy and you'll note some doubt it's real. But that is well, well beyond any backyard capabilities. That is military NSA grade stuff there.

That reminds me. I have, in Arizona, a replica 1861 Remington Old Army cap and ball revolver, manufacturer unknown. It works OK using Pyrodex powder, but I acquired some Pyrodex cylindrical "pellets" and loaded it up with those. Big mistake; it lead to chain fire incident. Scary, but no evident damage.

If I were to use greased patches for the balls, would that obviate the need to pack the front of each charged cylinder cavity with bore grease?

They sell grease impregnated felt wads and plastic cups for just that use. They seat between the bullet and the powder to avoid the need to grease the balls.
You can make the felt wads yourself using an appropriate sized hollow punch.
The other thing used to be to get pistol balls sized so that they would leave a tiny ring of lead sheared off the bullet an the chamber mouth when you ram it home .which tried to make sure there was obturation and less risk of flash-over.

It works OK using Pyrodex powder, but I acquired some Pyrodex cylindrical "pellets" and loaded it up with those. Big mistake; it lead to chain fire incident. Scary, but no evident damage.

If I were to use greased patches for the balls, would that obviate the need to pack the front of each charged cylinder cavity with bore grease?"

AOP,
I assume this is a reproduction, probably made by Pietta. I never use Pyrodex pellets, just loose powder. A lot of opinions about why chain fires happen. I think it's most likely due to caps too loose. My loading process is: pour in the measured powder charge, put a lubed felt wad (I make my own but they are available commercially) on top of the powder, then ram the ball down. The round ball should be slightly oversized so a thin ring of lead is shaved at the chamber mouth. That should seal the chamber from the front. Make sure the caps fit well enough so they don't just fall off due to recoil. That should seal the rear of the chamber. I don't use grease on top of the ball and have never had a chain fire using this process.

Luxury. The only slivers of anything we got were wood or glass with a tablespoon of fetid pondwater instead of milk. And if we didn't eat everything in the bowl we were buried up to our necks in a compost heap and hit in the head with a 3-wood until dinnertime when we were made to finish what was left from breakfast.

151 Eh... You missed the joke. "Peruke" is an archaic word meaning "wig" like worn by Brit lawyers.

Oh, I saw that, but I thought you were combining "perique" and "puke."

Is there anything you do not know something about?

153 147 ... I find the Escudo and Luxury Bullseye Flake are very similar.

154 JTB is on the money on Black powder.
My ".44" black powder Pietta doesn't create a nice circular ring with a .452 lead ball.
It does with the .457 lead ball.
Lesson?
My replica .44 is most probably a .45.

155 BTW, where has all the Scheutzen gone?

156 155 ... "BTW, where has all the Scheutzen gone?"

Can't find any 2F or 3F in stock at the usual outlets. The canon and 1F and 4F is available.

157 MkY,
Midwayusa has some Swiss in stock but at 60 bucks a pound it makes me wince. I wish Goex would get off their ass and get production going. If you are shooting percussion, consider Pyrodex. I prefer real BP but Pyrodex will do the job. Just clean carefully.
