Last night, Reid Wiseman, commander of Artemis II, posted this video showing the Erf setting behind the Moon as they whipped around the far side. He shot that with an iPhone, and I'm sure Apple will get the PR opportunity of a lifetime from this: https://is.gd/vUs3T0 He posted the uncut clip, and at the beginning you'll see the iPhone camera adjusting to get everything in focus. You'll note a bunch of little globules appearing there. That is dust and stuff floating inside the capsule. The other stuff includes well, little flecks of dead skin, little cough droplets -- say it don't spray it -- and the other stuff people and equipment shed all the time. In zero-g, that stuff just floats around until it finally gets removed by the filters in the air circulation system. I drove out to the local burger and ice cream place, Bogey's. It's a little one-room place that looks like it ought to be a bar; you have to stand in line to place your order. But the bacon cheeseburger was just the right size, they left out the onions as I requested, and even the small ice cream cup was pretty good-sized, all for less then $10. I had trouble believing their online prices -- $3.49 for a basic burger??? -- but that's for real. They don't have a real wait staff, which helps keep prices down. Too windy outside to enjoy a pipe, so I think I'll just flake out here. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 20, 2026 07:59 PM (+2QQb) 31

Gf's friend's parents had sponsored Seiji Ozawa's immigration years before. So we often got to go backstage after and meet the musicians. And Ozawa, once. PITTSBURGH, April 16, 2026 – U. S. Steel today announced plans to restart the Gary Tin Mill at the company’s Gary Works facility, positioning the company to increase domestic tin mill production and provide customers with American made supply. The planned restart requires sustained customer interest in securing long term domestic tin mill supply and U. S. Steel’s belief that demand can be met by increased U.S. production when market conditions allow for fair competition. The restart is intended to provide customers greater access to reliable, American made tin mill products—mined, melted, and made in America—as part of a more balanced domestic supply mix. Lucky me got to see one of them in Mercer County. Thankfully, it was heading up into the sky because I was WAY TOO CLOSE to it. Close enough to see up through it. Crazy day. Weird thing was, though very close to it, no wind. It was calm. The tornado was probably at the end of its run when I saw it.

Basic buttercream frosting: 1 16 oz package powdered sugar 6 tbsp softened butter 3-4 tbsp milk 1 1/2 tsp vanilla 1/8 tsp salt Put about half of the sugar, all the milk and butter and vanilla and salt in a bowl. Blend with mixer starting on low. Slowly add the remaining sugar. Mix until smooth and the consistency you want. Add more milk a teaspoon or 2 at a time to get it the right consistency. Super simple. I've found that a simple French apple cake is incredibly good, and most importantly has a very high "how good is it/how easy is it to make" quotient. Suppose I should chime in on Sunday's thread with the recipe.
I continue to strive and struggle to improve my pie crust for all kinds of pies, savory and fruit, and quiches. The crust generally is fine, but I really want to replicate commercial flakiness. But I haven't done much with cakes, which is why the French apple cake is so handy. Have my mother's Sunbeam mixer - works fine. Should probably sell it as a collectible on eBay and finally say yes to good friend's wife who has long offered to give me their Kitchenaid, which she just doesn't use. But it's sort of cool to use something I clearly remember from when my sister and I would be begging to "clean" the bowls and blender attachments after mom made sugar cookies. But pretty Japanese schoolgirls, school buses ripped in half horizontally, pretty Japanese teachers with automatic weapons and rocket launchers taking out the girls, some talk about infinite universes and we can change our destiny and I'm only 40 minutes in. Great effects. Okay, the cat is outside. Oh, pretty japanese schoolgirl lesbianism....apparently I'm fine with that. Posted by: Stateless - He ain't heavy, he's my dog. Saw a Youtube bodycam vid of a young woman pulled over for DUI, very drunk. She had 23 empty bottles of vanilla extract in the front of her car. So, be careful.
Posted by: McCormick's Best at April 20, 2026 Donut Operator said she was "in the pocket dimension." I got mad because they took forever in getting an ambulance there, and when it did, they tried to give her a modified field sobriety test and she couldn't even focus on the pen. Dude, just get her BAC when she gets to the hospital, if she makes it that long. Posted by: pookysgirl learned things about vanilla extract that day at April 20, 2026 09:18 PM (Wt5PA) 176

Some of those little specks are indeed likely little water droplets. Floating around in zero-g, tiny little water droplets as well as dust, dead skin, and all the other stuff people shed just floats around. Natural convection doesn't happen much at all in zero-g. Heck, without forced air circulation, just breathing, a little bubble of CO2 you exhale would build up around your face. I am not a good baker.
When the kids were growing up they said the smoke alarm is going off. Mom's baking again, lol. Posted by: four seasons at April 20, 2026 09:08 PM (3ek7K) When my mother died my father found himself in a bit of a bind. Mom was the baker from hell, and my father has the sweet tooth from hell, and now his source of endless chocolate cakes, and brownies, and other goodies were gone. In desperation he learned how to bake. He makes his chocolate cakes from scratch, no box mix, and they are amazing, moist right down the pan. Now he bakes all kinds of things. Damn if he didn't master that shit. Mrs B is the baker from hell, and he is right on her heels. If my father can do it, I think just about anybody could do it. The only thing my father knew about ovens is how to install them. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at April 20, 2026 09:19 PM (snZF9) 179

Posted by: screaming in digital at April 20, 2026 09:14 PM (MSrAy) I make apple crisp, it is chopped up apples with a topping of a cup of rolled oats, a half cup of brown sugar, 1/4 cup of flour, and 1/2 cup of butter, mixed together until it is crumbs. The topping goes on top of the apples, and bake at 350F for 40-45 minutes. it is best with Gravensteins I also make an apple conserve with shredded apples, it is the same recipe as peach jam. it is good on lots of things. Sorry to hear it's sick call time. I have that exact same view of San Gimignano in a photo taken from the farm to table restaurant where Mrs. R and I visited in October 2019. I couldn't pronounce Gimignano so I just called it San Chimichanga. Needless to say the locals were not amused...

@jimmy_dore According to retired CIA analyst Larry Johnson: During an emergency meeting On Saturday Trump tried to “use the nuclear codes” on Iran and he was stopped by General Dan Caine. Why Whitmire voted for that sanctuary city ordinance. The Democrats are trying to dump him, they call him a MAGA mayor. Overall Whitmire is a really good mayor, he prosecuted former city employees for corruption, he himself was held up at gun point in his garage, so he supports people being able to defend themselves.
This was his attempt to keep the rest of the Democrats from dumping him. Not excusing his vote, just explaining why he did it. Posted by: An Observation sez Trump is my President at April 20, 2026 09:31 PM (Da7Vv) 193

Also I have to report that Kansas, at least at this time of year, is very comfortable to be outdoors in. Or maybe it's an unusually cool spell. Highs about 80, lows around 55, and the humidity is low enough throughout the day that my hands, instead of feeling dipped in glue as they do in Da Swamp, are dry all the time.
When I got back from two hours of house viewing this morning, though, I was *thirsty.* I'd forgotten how even moderate low humidity can dry you out. When I went out to wash the car about 3:30, I brought a cup of ice water with me! Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 20, 2026 09:32 PM (+2QQb) 195
