When I was young, I wondered why my Easter egg decorating kit said it was for "Paques." That's just the French for the old Latin term "Pascha" which just means Pesach or Passover. Most Romance language countries call Easter something like "Paques:" -- Spanish Pascua, Italian Pasqua. Easter is specifically an Old English word and probably means "dawn."

The English word "Easter" originates from Old English Eastre or Eostre, likely derived from a Proto-Germanic root for "dawn" (austron-) or a springtime goddess associated with the east. This name is traditionally linked to the rising sun, symbolizing the resurrection, and was adopted to replace earlier Pascha celebrations.

It's been two weeks since he fell out of my bed. I took away the doggy stairs so he can't jump up there without me around. I lift him up. I lift him down. Not a problem.

He went outside. Came back in. I'm in my chair looking for a horror movie. For some reason, this 14.7 year old dog decides he'll run and jump on the bed like he used to do. His bacl legs are very strong, but not THAT strong.

Ralphy hit the bed, fell backwards. He's fine. He's walking. He looked so stunned. I have two more weeks of pain pills. He's laying on the bed now. Still WTF?

The vet always comments how full of life he is for his age. Still. WTF??

Dash, I took away the stairs because he used them the day before his bigger fall and somehow fell!

He really is not that bad. I let the vet decide on life or death but he was bouncing around and after her examination, she chose life. I've been carrying him but he's been fine over a week ago.

Had a moose hit by a truck on the highway last week. Those get harvested by people who sign up to do so. Left the gut pile and a bunch of blood next to the road.

I saw no less than 12 bald eagles in one big old cottonwood tree on one side of the road and about 20 ravens in another one on the other side.

This week, you would never know it happened.

These are kids who can't help but destroy the barracks they live in, so not known for impulse control. Best one could have hoped for was storage of privately owned firearms in the unit armory (if living on Base). Then got much more restrictive after 9-11.
Real awkward as some Bases had MWR ranges and hunting areas. Bases w/o ranges and if you lived off-Base you were SOL.

Stationed at NAF DC (Andrews) one could use the Air Force indoor shooting range (no problem with that, the guys were great, no appointments) but if you were a barracks rat the gun was stored there. Left a pride and joy, a Smith and Wesson model 41 there. Now I know the range guys would take stored guns back to try out, but a nice rusty fingerprint in that beautiful bluing kinda pissed me off. Started keeping the guns in my room, locked up and locked in a locked locker, which is about as locked as you can get.

So I was walking towards the front when a decent size limb came out of the oak tree right onto that powerline. Stretched it almost to the ground, I thought would break but it didn’t - and then one end touched the ground and 40,000 volts arced through it. BAM! Looked and sounded like lightning, given that I was only about 40 feet away it really sounded like an explosion. Damn!!!

When I ran back inside, first thing the wife said was “WHAT DID YOU DO???”

That would be very difficult to do. Moose are pretty tough. I guess you could hit one in the eye and have it go into the brain, but I can't imagine a body shot with a .22 would do much.

And I do know what to do with a moose. It goes in the freezer; takes about a week to process all that. The hide gets to be mittens that last a very long time. The horns, should it have them, go over the garage door. Lol.

In the early 80's, young Lieutenant Diogenes was running a pistol.range at Ft Lewis. It was common kniwledge.that when doing this job, anyone (think the commanding general) could show up and shoot his privately owned weapons. And if you were running the range correctly, he'd let you shoot his old Colt .45. Hell of a lot of fun back then.

My squad leaders, platoon sergeants, and platoon leaders had better be in those barracks every damned day and at least once on the weekend. Not an inspection, but just being seen and seeing. Any damage is a swift paycheck adjustment.

Not at Ft. Wainwright, anyway. The hallways are always dusty and filthy. Some of the individual rooms are pretty gnarly, too. I don't think I ever saw any sergeants in the barracks proper. They are down in the day room sometimes, but not the rest of the building. We were forever getting told to make the rooms more like jails than apartments, because then they wouldn't destroy them.

There are versions of Buddhism that have different existences you can be reborn into, and 'heaven' and 'hell' can describe the best and worst of them. They're not final destinations like in Christianity, though. You can screw up in heaven, or live a really great life in hell, and be reborn back here next go-round.

I'm unfamiliar with the details (probably because Japan does its own thing, so anime is not much of a guide here) but I understand that the basis is the Hindu "Yama Courts". You get judged by the lawbooks of these Asian cultures, like disrespecting your parents is among the worst sins. Then you go to a hell that befits those sins, or the judges figure out a fitting reincarnation for you.
It's all a little baroque for a Westerner like myself.
I figure that someone who messes up bad enough in this life to be sent to a worse one, is unlikely to find any better help in the worse one.

196 Tea eggs are an asian thing. Hard boil the eggs then roll them around and crackle the shells, and soak them for a couple three days in very strong tea. You can make the tea with extra salt and herbs like star anise and ginger.

They are pretty, and I guess they taste better too, but I never tasted much difference, but the whites get stained in a nice cobwebby pattern under the cracked shell.

I was a dishwasher goon/prep cook in an Alaska restaurant. The breakfast cook was a master of over easy eggs. No spatula, just really good pans and a flip. He also did omelets with a slightly larger pan. He always washed his own pans, and kept them in a separate spot, draped with towels.

Kind of an autist thing, perhaps.
