This one is admitted AI. But it's cute, and the guy admitted it was AI instead of trying to trick people, so I'll post it. Bunny moves in for a kiss. Cute: An owl was brooding over lifeless eggs so some humans pulled a switcheroo, replacing the dead eggs with live orphaned chicks. The owl is very happy. Baby bunny shoplifts at Home Depot. A sheepdog nips at a mother sheep when she tries to reject her lamb. How do dogs know to do this? Driver stops his car to allow a mother sheep to finish feeding her lambs. To let you know the imbecility of some of the current residents of our lovely neighborhood (which wasn't always populated with these folks), I read on Facebook this morning of a person who was quite upset that someone had cut down the tree across the street from their house.
Okay, it happens sometimes - we have a lot of big old trees in our neighborhood. I hate that some of them get razed, but sometimes there are good reasons for it. THIS dingbat, though, was so upset by the loss of this tree that THEY TOOK TO THEIR BED AND CRIED ABOUT IT ALL MORNING. Nobody called this delicate flower out for being a waste of space, either. Or told them to pull up their big girl panties and deal with it. And these people think that I am the crazy one because I don't support Democrats.... The city put the tree on trial to access the damage it caused to their infrastructure and ruled it was sentenced to death. The city came out and nailed a notice on it that detailed the whole thing to everyone. Then they came out, cut it down then ground the stump. It was a nice looking tree and one of the main shades on our house. They replaced it with a two foot tall twig that I'm sure will look great in a hundred years. Our neighborhood was built up in the mid-to-late 50s. There were many trees from that time that attained great height and breadth throughout the yards here. In the past ten year, many of them have succumbed to old age or disease and now are seen here no more. In our yard alone, two spruce, one pine, two sweet gum, four white ash, and three oaks have been removed over the course of twenty-five years. All were large trees and many of them were aged fifty years or more. We're in need of some serious (i.e., up to six specimens) replanting. Here's a amusing little story....
We're having a fair amount of wind... gusts into the 40's which where I'm at, in a mobile home, is getting sketchy. Some roof shingles blew off and I made a half hearted attempt to reattach them, but the wind ripped them off again. So... I get the ladder out and climb up on the roof with some epoxy and sealer. The wind blew my ladder off the side of the house while I was up on the roof. I was up there for 2 hours before my wife came home. Not much to do up there. Views are nice. Need to remember to take my cell phone literally everywhere now. Oh... the shingles blew off again. FML Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 03, 2026 08:31 PM (AkEZC) 82
The tulip poplar's curse is its weak wood. There nearly always were fallen branches to be picked up after high winds, and these were live, not dead. An arborist strongly recommended that we get rid of the silver maple. Its root system was extensive and the tree itself was right next to the street. I must have extracted its roots from the ground for four years after it was taken down. Posted by: Krebs 'v' Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) Imprison! Imprison! Some years ago a childhood buddy and I took a hike through the woods behind the street we grew up on and found the site of our old fort. The tree it was braced against had been hit by lightning long ago and was all split, charred and dead. As kids we didn't know better than to build a shelter at the base of a tree, let alone a tall one.
But, we found lots of old nails in the tree that we had pounded in as kids, and some digging unearthed many bits of wood and the hinges and padlock from the fort's front door. We also found and excavated our old fire pit in front of it. Even found some old hotdog packages from the 70s. Plastic just never degrades, man. It was a real trip to revisit our past through old artifacts. Posted by: Delurker at April 03, 2026 08:35 PM (gtcuf) 91

Being in the land of mesquite and cedar, we planted red oaks. They are 40 years old now. Bad planning because the two that flank the gate grow into the power line and get brutalized every couple of years but that is totally our fault.

Here at Rancho Webworks, we have huge trees that were young when my Grandfather was a young man.
We had to have a big pecan taken down; the tree guy said it was the tallest pecan he'd ever seen, until he was up in the cherry picker, looked over the shed, and saw the taller ones. They still produce, in a good year. Some of the grand old oaks have reached end of life. Lots of gaps in what used to be an almost continuous canopy. Wish I'd been transplanting oaks from the overgrown west pasture long ago; after thirty+ years since MiladyJo and I moved back here, they'd be shady. There are three majestically tall Ponderosas here. We've tried to grow some from pine cones, but never got them going. Then, this year, we found a couple of volunteers, just a couple of feet tall, which we transplanted last week. If they take, our kids should enjoy them in a few decades. I may not be around to see it, but it's nice to see them now. Daughter and son-in-law, who are planning to build and move out here, have added a nice bunch of fruit trees, and berry and grape vines. Again, an investment for future years for them to enjoy. I expect to enjoy some of that harvest. We have a transplant neighbor from CA who is so weird about trees. He is the only house on our street with zero trees and he goes around to the neighbors offering to split the cost of cutting down trees. We have a big oak in our front yard, Spanish moss, etc. He asks every 3 months if we will cut it down. No, John. We will not. It has lived through many a hurricane and if we have another one that launches it across the street into your house, we probably have bigger issues on our plate.
