5 Mornin'

Got my MacBook Sky yesterday. It will take a bit to get used to it. I like it but MacOS isn't Linux Mint or Windows. It's different. The laptop itself is very nice. Lightweight, pretty fast, fairly easy to set up though I'm still doing that, and runs quiet. Safari is different. I'll figure it out. I went to The Masters website and tried to save one of the pictures there. One of the holes. It saved the whole page and I just want the image. Should be a way in Safari to just save the image. I've done it in other browsers (Edge, Google, Brave, etc).

8 "You can get a 2TB Crucial P310 for $215 on Amazon. "

Apparently not that good. I'm seeing $231.95 USD on amazon.com, after I entered a U.S. zip code, but I'm still browsing from Canada, so who knows what their price algorithm is doing to that.

Checking amazon.ca: Supposedly 5 featured offers starting at $467.22, but it's also saying "no featured offers available" meaning they don't really have any.

The 4 TB option is $695.00 CAD.

Oh HELL no.

Also: Bite me, Micron.

I did get a refund, no questions asked.

And I actually managed to pick up a couple of Team-brand drives to replace them, at a lower cost per gigabyte and TLC rather than the QLC used in this model, so I'm not too put out by it.

Those drives have doubled in price in the last month, so not a minute too soon either.

17 So yesterday morning I had mentioned my dissatisfaction with our new Kwikset smart door lock.

Yesterday afternoon Kwikset reached out to me, and we spent about 20 minutes on the phone discussing the ongoing issues with the lock.
Very nice young lady, intelligent and knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the lock, both mechanically and smart feature sides.

After going over all the what-nots and stuff, she unasked told me that first they were sending me a complete new unit.

Upon receipt and install, if the issues persist, the whole thing jumps to the next level of tech support to see if there are additional factors causing the problem.

So.....things are happening.

Command + space bar is your friend and should become the main way you open apps or try to find things.

Command + tab will bring up all open apps and let you cycle through them. Command + q closes them.

Install home brew, it's a Mac terminal package manager that will allow you to install software via the terminal.

Install kitty or ghosty, these are terminals and are superior to the built in Mac terminal.

Install Chrome or Brave web browsers, install vim extension in either of them. This will allow you to navigate the web browser with keyboard commands.

I would recommend installing aerospace.

At the end of the day, you should be able to drive your Mac via the keyboard and using the mouse as little as possible.

This will make using your computer so much more productively .

29 In other tech annoyances, GoComics has (apparently sometime between yesterday and today) implemented a new security layer to protect themselves from attacks. They've outsourced this to some outfit called 'bunny.net' that requires the running of WebAssembly in my browser.

Thing is, I'd long ago turned off WebAssembly in my browser (FireFox) in order to protect myself from buffer overflow attacks that could break out of WebAssembly's sandbox.

End result: I'm not reading three comics at GoComics anymore as of this morning. Oh well.

I did dash off a note to them explaining things, and that I didn't expect them to revert their changes just due to me, but I at least wanted to let them know that not everyone out there is willing to let WebAssembly run, and why.

It's not going away for me on refresh, but I completely neutered WebAssembly in FireFox's about:config screen.

Now if Firefox had a per-site whitelist where I would allow web-assembly to run, then maybe I'd change my stance. Maybe.

Morning to you, G & R,

I've never driven a school bus except in my imagination. In a mystery novel I plan to self-publish, the narrator, a 27-year-old woman who knows how to drive a stick, is forced to drive a school bus in the snow along a twisting mountain road as darkness falls, to save her boss's life. I just tried to imagine the noise and vibration, the feel of the bus's long body, etc. My pre-readers have told me it was exciting, which was what I was hoping for!

Furballs are well -- and hungry! Dagny is right here with me.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 31, 2026 06:01 AM (wzUl9)

46 As for the taxes, I looked back at the last three years of state returns. I claimed my SS deduction then. The deduction used to be right there on the main form, like on the Fed 1040. Now, like that one, you have a "Schedule E" where you enter it and any others. I almost missed it and was thinking I had a *big* payment to make -- enough so that I should have sent estimated payments to the state last year.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 31, 2026 06:05 AM (wzUl9)

47 I have actually driven a school bus. No kids, just a variety of military folks as I was at a Joint Command. Drove a bus a few times when i was deployed or had some special event and was told I'm driving the bus. I was a comms guy. A low ranking enlisted guy at a top heavy unit. No big deal. I didn't wreck and no complaints.

51 @45/Wolfus:

Glad the furry thugs are well, and of course they're hungry! ;-)

As to the School Bus driving: One of the biggest problems when driving a bus is the fact that when making a left turn, you have to turn WIDE so you don't impinge on the opposite lane for the pair of lanes you're turning into (ie, don't go over the other guy's stop line.) And yet, that's a lot easier than making a right.

Right turns are a pain in the ass in a school bus, mostly because the bus hangs out an additional distance behind the back wheels, and those wheels are the pivot point in a turn.

You must drive straight out into the intersection until the edge of the curb is just past the middle of your service door, and then begin your turn. If you do it right, and while watching your lower mirror on the right, your back right wheels will JUST miss the curb and not go up over it.

You're also trying to balance your front left of the bus not touching the car at his stop line in front of you to the left, as well as making sure your back left of your bus doesn't swing out and hit a car as you turn.

Oh, and did I mention making sure bicyclists aren't coming up on your right side while turning right?

53 SF chocolate company recalls products for being spiked with Viagra ingredients
By Itzel Luna,
Los Angeles Times
March 30, 2026

The San Francisco Bay Area's Gear Isle recalled the products after they were found to contain undeclared prescription drug ingredients used to treat erectile dysfunction, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced last week. The products, sold online across the U.S., were found to have sildenafil and tadalafil. The ingredients could cause a "life-threatening" drop in blood pressure when mixed with nitrates found in prescription drugs, according to the FDA.

The two recalled products are Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Male Enhancement Sachet and ilum Sex Chocolate Male Sexual Enhancement Booster. The FDA initially issued a warning in February advising consumers not to purchase the second item after confirming the product contained tadalafil.

I was forced to correspond with Indian coders and support staff at one point in my career. It was terrible. That, and I swear they're not permitted to show any initiative themselves, lest responsibility somehow fall upon their shoulders.

62 @60/Wolfus: You're welcome. Left, you just head out into the intersection so you're well past the left edge of the stop line for the driver on your left, and then you go hard-left on your steering wheel, and correct once you're into the lane.

Oh, and in a double-left turn lane, the bus and other large/long vehicles ALWAYS take the right-most of the left-turn lanes. (Otherwise the swing of the back end would hit a vehicle in that right-most left-hand turn lane during the turn and we don't want that.) Little vehicles take the inner/left-most turn lane.

I have said before, I think Chinese buyers of rhino horn and similar should all switch en masse to fake rhino with real erectile dysfunction drugs. Their culture has shown a complete absence of compunction against fraud, and that would save both the rhinos and the erections. Good riddance!

The fact that he doesn’t mention — much less show any contrition for — UNRWA‘s involvement in October 7, nor their infiltration by Hamas, is a perfect example of how UN officials dodge accountability through moral grandstanding.

In my final op-ed as I end my tenure as Commissioner-General, I warn about relentless efforts to destroy UNRWA, amid growing disregard for international law.

Maybe you should call the international police. Oh wait...that's the United States.

81 Willie Brown once vetoed an SF ordinance saying he had constitutional concerns about it (that's how far left it was). Veto overridden. I got it declared unconstitutional. :->

84 Wolfus: You're welcome.

Since she is not driving in traffic, or at least turning in it, your rules may not apply to the scene. She does make a turn from a county highway onto a US route that fortunately does not have much traffic, though.

86 That's more blocks than even the ICE account, suggesting that while the inmates are clinically insane they are not entirely stupid.

Marxists *hate* AI. Like, rabidly, at The Verge levels of crazy.

They think it will eliminate all of the jobs where they're currently creating ugly fat women for video games and the like. And they aren't wrong.

87 The latest Windows 11 update isn't. (Tom's Hardware)
Microsoft has pulled the update entirely because it didn't work. At all.

Anyone else remember the days when you could buy software - like an OS - and you installed it... then you forgot about it unless you had to reinstall (like a new computer)? There were no updates for security they failed to build in? When they actually tested stuff before it went out the door? When you owned the software?
