3 Pixy, maybe ace could be given a cool hash like you have? He was all over the threads yesterday--yay!--as this:

6 The site should be modified so ace can only post as Lamont with the hash (bGdmY).

7 And my current hash basically reads like a furry saying yiff with a ballgag in his mouth. Unappreciated, bruv.

14 I am impressed by the social responsibility of that Girls' Generation video, taking aspirational consumption into account. Too many creators either forget or don't care that kids and teenagers are always looking up to older ones, consuming media up in age from themselves. For example, my understanding is that the primary market for "Young Adult" novels is adolescents, or maybe even tweens. And so it is with this video, where the performers themselves look to be young adults, but their target audience is not there yet. Somewhere in the process, a creative director cared about the health of his society and culture.

16 And they weren't on their cellphones--I don't think I saw a single cellphone. Which is refreshing.

Posted by: m at March 25, 2026 04:48 AM (+YA9H)

17 Open AI is a company with a product that can only make so much money chatting up bored people or writing their essays or legal briefs for them. That subscription fee only goes so far, and currently it's not as profitable as it needs to be.

Every other thing they're trying to sell can be done just as well, or better, by other AI/AI Agents, many of them for free or just the cost of the equipment and time.

Since Open AI is currently the king of the AI field many of their competitors are trying to follow their lead as they can't figure out how to make enough profit to pay for their data centers and dividends to their shareholders either.

It seems this might be the beginning of the AI bubble deflating (at least somewhat), as most of these Big AI corps can't get a handle on how to build-out while making enough money to keep everything inflating.

They've also driven up technology prices so high it's costing them more and more to do anything just like everybody else trying to get their hands on memory/storage chips of any kind. Energy prices are going the same route.

Something has to give and the bankruptcy or AI exit strategy for some of these big corps is on the horizon.

(I hope.)

22 Evening to the late Woden's Day toilers, morning to the early risers and insomaniacals. Stirling the Great Black Cat did not wake me up this morning, amazing to relate. So, here I am with my coffee.

SpeakingOf, if you're here, I took your advice and looked up Memory Clean 2 to try and resolve my iMac's hesitations. I downloaded it for both Apple products I have here; seems to work. While I was at it, I saw another product called CleanUpMySystem on the Apple Store. It appeared to be free -- but then turned out to have only a free three-day trial. Uninstalled.

I also researched how to speed up the Brave browser -- most of the hesitations have happened in Brave; and a couple of ways to speed up the MacOS. Best advice: Restart your computer every now and then!

31 Thurs. I take the Buick in for some filter changes and inspection of belts and hoses in prep for my trip to Kansas next month. I hope I don't have to buy a new LF tire; it's over five years old, while the others are about two. The usual advice is to replace both tires at the same end of the car, which would mean throwing away the RF tire. Oh, and I have to air up the compact spare. It takes ca. 60 psi compared to the others' 33-35.

Oh, I've always been a PC guy; I began in the DOS days and moved on into Windows. This MacBook Air laptop and the iMac desktop I inherited from work, so, you know, free. I used the laptop of and on for remote work in 2020; yesterday I finally got around to deleting all those files, which couldn't hurt the performance either.

What I like about the Macs is that, *generally*, they are like 1980s Mercedes. Once you understand how they work, they just work.

I could pick up a much more recent and powerful iMac and laptop, used, on the macsales site. Doesn't seem urgent right now.

42 Morning, Horde...How goes it?

We interrupt this invaluable Tech Thread with an important Sunday Morning Book Thread update:

In solidarity with ace and to commemorate "Tolkien Reading Day," I, too, will begin reading The Hobbit followed by Lord of the Rings.

I haven't read either of them in many years. In the case of The Hobbit I'm not even sure I've read my current copy.

We now return you to your regular morning Tech Thread shenanigans.

47 Incidentally, I'm using a borrowed laptop for the moment, and I'm finding that Windows 11 is fine. Well, I had been led to expect a raging dumpster fire, so it had a very low bar to clear, but it's quite alright. It's a little different, as they can never resist the urge to change things around, but I haven't noticed anything problematic yet. Nice silver lining to an unfortunate circumstance, I got to see it for myself.

54 I thought this was a nice story. Pope Leo declares Fr. Edward Flanagan "venerable" And no, i am not RC,and not, Episcopalian and not a "priestess" as one poster here has described me . I am interested in Fr. Flanagan ( the founder of Boys Town) because he sounds like he was quite a good man. The Korean War vet and patriarch of our church who just died gave to Boys Town and he wasn't RC either . From National Catholic Register:
