Gun Thread: Fourth Edition O' March!

032226 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be the Fourth Edition O' March? Hmmm?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

A proper setup is key to good fundamentals, and in rifle shooting with an optic, a critical element is having proper eye relief.

Q: Weasel, what the heck is eye relief?
A: Hold your eyeball too close to the ocular end of a rifle scope, pull the trigger, and you will find out in a hurry.

Once the bleeding stops and the swelling goes down, you will be able to accurately describe eye relief as the distance between your eye and the ocular end of the scope. You will also then be highly qualified to describe proper eye relief as a distance sufficient to protect your face from the recoiling scope, while allowing a clear and unobstructed view through the optic.

Anyhoo, proper eye relief varies by person and is something that must be fixed when mounting a scope to a rifle. In order to properly set eye relief, we must first understand the natural point of aim.

Natural point of aim is not a difficult concept, but many overlook or disregard it altogether. You should be relaxed and comfortable, not scrunching yourself up or straining your neck to get the proper eye relief behind the scope. Adjust your gear to YOU, not the other way around, finding the point where you are naturally aligned with the target. Without looking down range, close your eyes and settle into your natural shooting position, then open your eyes. Repeat the process until you are naturally and comfortably aligned with the target. Do not strain to adapt to an awkward position or use large muscles. With practice and repetition, you will condition your brain and body to assume something pretty close to natural point of aim as you assume your shooting position.

The key here is to find a repeatable cheek position on the stock which allows a full and clear view through the scope, and provides sufficient space (typically a few inches) so you don't get whacked in the face when the gun recoils.

When I am setting up a scope, I place the rings in an approximate position so they're evenly spaced along the scope tube with enough room to allow for small adjustments. Tighten them so they're just snug at this point in case repositioning is later necessary. Place the scope loosely into the rings, get behind the gun and find your natural point of aim. Look through the scope and adjust it forward and back without moving your head until you have a clear image that fills the field of view without vignetting, the dark/black donut that sometimes appears at the edges. You can make a light pencil mark on the scope against the ring(s) to save the position. Try it a few times to make certain you're satisfied, then torque everything down.

Congratulations, the proper eye relief is set!

Cigar Stuff

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Range report.

Went with son#1 and met MAE and LazyMessenger at our usual spot. Son and I did the “one hole” drill. Five rounds each at 3,5,7,10 and 15 yards. Try to make just one hole. He shot his G19, me, my Walther PPQ. We both shot well and had fun.

After range time, he took me out for take out soul food. I had a brisket sammich, greens and Mac and cheese. He had jerk chicken, red beans and rice and greens.

Awesome day.

23 Range report.
Went to the range on Friday to see how the rifle felt and to zero the scope.
Rifle felt great when shooting, but did not get to zero the rifle.
To much wobbly shit going on.
I need to replace the bipod and need a better bag for the rear.
The Protektor bag I have is not conducive to getting a stable foundation for the rifle chassis I have.
And the Harris bipod was just not good. Had problems making adjustments to the height. I felt like I was battling it all the time.

So I am not blaming the equipment, I blame myself.
But the rifle felt oh so nice when shooting. There is a muzzle brake that helped soften the recoil, but I think I could shoot it all day with no problem.

Will regroup and take it to the range when new bipod and bag come in and I will zero in that sucker!!

26 Well, playing with my AR-type 9 mm rifle today. Got the three ten-round mags whittled down a little by sanding them with a flap wheel so they fit easily into the mag well adaptor, and can be removed without a struggle. Push mag release, wiggle a tetch, and out they come. Replaced the buffer weight with one purpose built for 9 mm AR's. Put a 9 mm boresight round in the chamber, and it duly projected a dot on the inside of my garage door about 15 yards distant. I was just able to adjust my Gaialoop red dot sight so the dots were almost superimposed, but I am at the limit of elevation adjustment. I should be fine at 25 yards?

No shooting today. Next Sunday scheduled. Gun show in April. Trying to decide what to buy, if I really want to buy and if so what would be legal to buy.
Public Service announcement:
Palmetto State Armory is offering a packet with stickers, patches and some othe assorted dodads for $18 with proceeds to help VA patriots fight for 2A rights. Free shipping. Good deal.

Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at March 22, 2026 07:21 PM (t/2Uw)

29 IIRC, for a quality 1X red dot sight (EX: Aimpoint), you shouldn't have any problems w/ eye relief. You can have it relatively far forward (i.e. at the edge of where the upper receiver meets the barrel) and it'll still get you lined up properly on the target. It gets a bit tricky w/ the GI issue TA-31 4X32 ACOG for the M4. Eye relief for that is about one to one and a half inches. Thank goodness recoil on the M4 is pretty mild. There are other ACOG sights with better eye relief than the TA-31.

30 Evening.

Range report 1:

First, though, .22 dope, move and shoot method. One of the ranges I belong to has a really nice zero bay. I used one of the .22 steel props to get my data. I started at 25 yards and worked my way out to 200 yards in 25 yard increments. Paid off as I shot fairly consistently in our .22 match. The two places which cost me were the off hand 100 yard and the 200 yard stuff. Overall, though, the little CZ shot like a champ even if the owner held it back.

34 FWIW, the 10-round stick mags (Colt SMG style) seem to be made of thicker metal stock than the 30-round ones, which fit the mag well quite nicely. I attribut much of the mis-fit to overly thick paint or Cerakote on the mags. I blued the bared metal, and they look fine.

40 Range report 2:

Then, yesterday, I shot our 1,000 yard match with the 6.5-06. I decided to go with two sighters then shoot for score. (We're using the Shot Spotter system) We run 15 minute relays so if one wants to shoot 5 sighters, you're welcome to do so but you still need to be done inside 15 minutes. Anyway, first shot was high, 8 ring, but dead center. I suspected it was a rear rest set up problem and made sure to get down behind the rifle correctly. Second shot, 9 ring, still centered. I dialed and proceeded to shoot for score. Wound up middle of the pack with a 95, 5 in the 9 ring, 3 in the X and two in the 10 ring. It took me longer than it should but I found the spot and finished strong with 2 in the X ring and a 10.

The 6,5-06 really likes the Hornady 153 Grain A tips. I was also pleased because I caught the wind shift and still hit the X and 10 ring with my last shots.

My KelTec P3AT is still jamming on extract. I tried to tighten the external extractor screw, because KelTec of course the extractor is held on with an external screw. My first few 5 round drills went fine but then I got failures to extract on every single round.

So back to KelTec it goes. Frustrating.

Also did some XD9 drills, which reminded me that it's been too long since I shot this gun. The 115 gr JHP hit low, the 147s were dead on. Still...great gun, no problems, just need to basically commit to one carry system.

hah

Good. One thing I’ve had people try is to get the rifle set up solidly on the bipod and bag, have them center the crosshairs on the target, then back every part of your body away from the rifle without touching anything.
Then get your body and head behind the scope and rifle, again without touching anything . If you’re still on target, good. Then adjust your body naturally around that point without feeling any strain or discomfort. If you’ve done it right, it should be your natural point of aim.
I’d be hesitant to change any gear out yet until you have gone through the exercise several times.
Also, does Tikka recommend a break-in schedule?

82 My son just recently bought his first house in a kinda rough neighborhood. He's not against guns, but not a gun nut like me, either. So, I've been considering what to get him for home defense.

As he's not a gun nut, I don't want something with a magazine using springs, as he won't rotate mags, and you'd want the weapon loaded. Break actions (like a coach gun) have a bit too little capacity, so I'm thinking revolver.

Was at a gun show with my dad last weekend, and saw a Taurus Judge Home Defender model, and it seemed just about right. Slap a pressure activated laser sight on it and load it with 000 buck and it could be just about perfect. https://tinyurl.com/y9b8fd6z

97 Interesting comparison between Maryland and SC.

Maryland says you must complete training just to get permission from the State to purchase a handgun.

South Carolina says that the State is required to teach the CWP course twice every month in every county in the State.

For free.

And as of last year, a permit is not required in order to carry either open, or concealed.

But the course is well worth taking.

Lasers are useful for dry practice even if you don't use them for serious social events. Just remember they are zeroed at a certain range for a certain ammo and changing either can result in a shot higher or lower than what it point of aim.

That pistol is essentially a short barrelled shotgun without the need for NFA permit. Should have decent ballistics at bad breath range.

For home self defense, if he practices with it, it could be okay.

Just in case, I would also get an inexpensive pump action shotgun (often easy to get used) just like Nurse Ratched suggests. A youth model twenty gauge is more than sufficient.

118 Hi sharon!

The Mrs says hello as well.

And a brief range report on the Security 380.

In a nutshell, I like it.

Large enough to fill your hand properly, yet small enough to conceal.
And the light rack system is everything they say.

We get older, and we don't do things as well as we used to. Including absorbing recoil, and hand strength to rack a slide.

My P-64's are concealable, but punishing to shoot more than a mag or two, so it's not even enjoyable to practice.

I went through 100 rounds yesterday, and at the end of the day, my hands didn't even feel like I had been shooting.

And surprisingly, from 5-25 yards, pretty good grouping, even on 2-1 drills, and timed holster to target drills, which really surprised me.

If your son won't practice with it, that firearm may well become a liability, not an asset. It needs be something he's comfortable with and something he likes practicing with. What you think will work for him is secondary. If magazine concerns steer you toward revolvers, I'd recommend one chambered in.38 Special or .357 Magnum. .38 Specials in general are much more manageable than something chambered for .45 Long Colt. Check out the spread of a .410 shotgun round - it's not that great at the distances you'll find in a home defense scenario.

The one thing that serious shotgunners get right is fitting the stock to their body. That often requires lengthening or shortening the stock, sometimes it can be fixed with shims or slipover recoil pads. And now adjustable AR type stocks are around.

Stock fit can definitely affect Point of Aim differing from Point of Impact.

If you shoot a rifle a lot, it is also important but often shotgunners go through A LOT of ammo in trap or skeet shooting.

Good news is none of the parcel of gun control laws have any affect on suppressors, BUT the firearm I intend the suppressor for is the EP9 which is a large format pistol - and that will be illegal to carry any place that is open to the public after July 1. I expect I will have all the things affected by the carry law moved out to Florida by then.

147 Well, I got the AR packed away in its case. Ready for range (or desert) day tomorrow.

And, bonus, I think I got the wee H&R top break .32 fixed. I simply ground the end of the mainspring down, twice. I figured the new mainspring should have a stronger spring constant than the old tired one, so a little slack at hammer takeup shouldn't matter, it's the strongly arched spring pushing on the hammer from full cock that gives it its oomph. It popped the primer on an unloaded cartridge OK, and the trigger now resets as it should. Going to the desert, too.

If you have one of the original Colt manufactured M1921 or M1921AC (w/ the Cutts compensator) Thompsons, there's a fairly extensive record of who they were sold to thanks to Colt's archives. Despite the influence of Hollywood gangster films, they were slow sellers. The last of them were still around to be bought up by the Brits post Dunkirk when the BSC came to America and bought up anything in sight.

You would have to ask him - I don't know that much about guns....

He bought it (with appropriate documentation and tax stamps) from our neighbor, the gunsmith, who fell upon hard times recently. Our neighbor brought it with him for DD#3's after-wedding shooting get-together. One of their guests was from Germany, and we got a great picture of him holding it and shooting it. He was practically orgasmic 😂

150 So as folks are leaving, let me share a little bit about 380 ammo, and it's availability down here.

I live five miles from Palmetto State Armory's largest brick and mortar store. Range and practice 380 ammo is about impossible to find...anywhere.

So I had an order into Freedom Munitions that I needed to check on, and asked them about the status of 380. And the very nice woman there told me that starting last year, 380 range rounds are flying off the shelf at a rate that she has never seen before.

Almost as if a large number of folks have decided to start practicing with a round that is almost exclusively for self defense.

I just thought it was interesting.

One of the reasons to go with calibers that were adopted by the military. They're usually available (even at a higher price) than those that depend exclusively on commercial sales to make $$. .380 was tough to come by during the pandemic too.

Very possible. Other than 9mm and perhaps 40 S&W and 45 ACP, a lot of other pistol cartridges are scheduled runs, the more uncommon the cartridge and demand, the less often the scheduled run. But, like a lot of ammo scheduling, it is based on past demand projecting into the future.

380 ACP had a supply shock when the really small compact 380 pistols came out by Keltec and Ruger, over ten or so years ago. Demand soared for ammo which simply was not there. Then demand for the ammo and tiny handguns receded because those small and light guns are not particularly pleasant to fire even with 380 ACP.

Now, mebbe, the same cycle is occurring as larger and heavier firearms chambered in it and the 380 ACP are popular again apparently.

I noticed the same phenomenon with 327 Magnum pistols, they built snubbies for these which is ludicrous. Like the 357, these are best shot in larger and heavier firearms, not small 2 inch or so snubbies.

170 SilencerCentral has kiosks at resellers so that you can do your Form 3 all in one place - fill it out on the kiosk including getting your fingerprints.

The store that had the kiosk is not one I have been to before. It is small, and one guy behind the counter - not sure if he is the owner I am thinking it is.

Anyway, he was rude and dismissive. I have never run into that at a gun store though I have seen videos on YouTube about the 4 types of gun store staffers or whatever and they include the rude guy. But have never experienced it in person. Until now.

Provenance and history is a big factor in the collectibles market (which all original Thompsons from Colt are). A Thompson made during the post war period will never compete in the same league (assuming condition is roughly equal) as a Model 1921 Colt Thompson. If you can document that your Thompson has passed through the hands of a law enforcement organization, a famous (or notorious) person, it will command much more than a Thompson without any notable history behind it.

Try a slip on recoil pad. Limbsaver and Allen among others make them. And they tell you how much they increase the length of pull aka LOP. Usually gain about 1/2 to 1 inch with a std one.

They also make grind to fit length of pull buttpads and shims where it literally installs with longer screws into the stock. Either of these can increase length of pull.

To reduce the length, usually requires cutting the stock (sometimes youth stocks are available which are usually 1-1.5 inches shorter in LOP.).

176 A 2" barrel won't allow the .357 Magnum round the develop the extra velocity that makes it more effective. But it will give you a decent imitation of a flash-bang in your face. Tried .357 out of snub nosed Python (2.5" barrel) once. I don't recommend it. If you're going to use .357, go with at least a 4" barrel.

If you need a snubbie instead of a real handgun, load .38 special wadcutters. Those flat cylinders will make sufficient holes without wasting powder and causing shooter pain.

Ballistics of a 357 are not that much better compared to a stiff +p 38 Special in a barrel shorter than 2 inches unless you go for the specialized short barrel self defense ammo like Speer's Gold Dot. Personally prefer 3 inch barrels which are not exactly snubbies anymore but the 357 begins to shine when the barrel length is 4 inches or more. Much less nasty blast too.

I carried and shot snubbies for years with +p which are adequate for self defense but a couple of boxes of ammo with a range's 357 snubbie convinced me that I wanted a longer barrel to shoot one than a 2.5 incher. IIRC, it was a Speed Six snubbie.

If I personally had to shoot a magnum snubbie with a 357 (or the Treasury Load of +P+ 38 Special) self defense round, the fast and lighter bullets, aka 100-110 gr, do pretty good as far as ballistics and recoil albeit you still have the muzzle blast from them.

Teresa, if he wants to pass that on to a family member, it i# absolutely a requirement to do an NFA Trust; otherwise, when he passes, the gun will go straight to law enforcement and there is serious legal jeopardy.

188 This is one recognized as good in those 1 7/8 inch barrel Smith snubbies,

Gold Dot Short Barrel Personal Protection, 357 Magnum, 135 Grain, Gold Dot Hollow Point Short Barrel, 990 fps

Corbon PowrBall will get you about 1150-1200 fps in 357 Magnum with a 100 gr polymer capped bullet and about 1/2 expanded with 12 inches of penetration.

If you do carry a 357 snubbie, Powrball has a fmj profile so it works well in speedloaders where wadcutters or even semi wadcutters can sometimes hang a bit on going into the chambers.

Reason why I wear padded shooting gloves for extended range and use a PACT gel shoulder shield when shooting rifles or shotguns. Hurting from recoil shortens practice and degrades accuracy so why hurt when shooting.

Jah, I go off Jim Cirillo's judgement who shot a lot of people while an NYPD cop. The 'barrel' shape of the wadcutter made it more useful than the round nose ball ammo. You want to dump energy into the target and not have rounds slip through the skin and exit without making holes in organs.

I have a bunch of .38 Special +P that I shoot out of my Ruger GP100 4". It's stout, but absolutely controllable, and the GP100 grip is excellent, so it is fine for extended range sessions.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 22, 2026 09:15 PM (n9ltV)

193 MAE, my understanding is that old LEO preferred .38 in wadcutters because of the wound cutting effect. I’ve shot wadcutters and semi wadcutters out of a 4” bbl .38 Spl and can confirm.
Nothing like .357, etc., but I would not volunteer to be a target. 😀
Posted by: RI Red

It was because round tipped lead bullets common at the time were known as widow makers. Wadcutters and the later Semi Wadcutters might not expand but did break bones and penetrate causing more wound channel damage than round tipped.

The ultimate old style tech was the swaged (almost pure lead) lead semi wadcutter hollow points that Federal, Remington, and Winchester sold at 158 gr +p for law enforcement. These expanded well at about 1000 fps or so from 4 inch cop barrelled revolvers.

Then the switch to magnums began with the 357 magnum 125 gr hollow points propelled to about 1400-1450 fps out of 4 inch barrels. This gave cops exponentially more power to penetrate car bodies and cause really nasty wounds in perps.

The older 158 gr bullets in 357 magnum, usually scalloped aka semi jacketed did not give the same wounding stats which is why cops initially did not like the Magnum as much in the 50-60's.

195 Teresa, if he wants to pass that on to a family member, it i# absolutely a requirement to do an NFA Trust; otherwise, when he passes, the gun will go straight to law enforcement and there is serious legal jeopardy.

+1 on this. Don't get entangled w/ BATFE when it comes to NFA Class 3 firearms. If you want to roll w/ a trust, do it sooner rather than later.

197 Jah, I go off Jim Cirillo's judgement who shot a lot of people while an NYPD cop. The 'barrel' shape of the wadcutter made it more useful than the round nose ball ammo. You want to dump energy into the target and not have rounds slip through the skin and exit without making holes in organs.
Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards

IIRC, I think part of Cirillo's quandry was NYPD was not allowed to fire hollow points when he was on it. That did not change until Amadou Diallo got cops dumping their mags into him as their 9mm fmj simply did not cause him to drop immediately. They zipped through. There was also some publicized shooting of bystanders by bullets that went through the perp and still injured others downfield including I think a cop got killed that way.

NJ, AFAIK, still has a stupid law against hollow points possessed by citizens so avoid that state if travelling through or via an airline stop even following FOPA requirements.

Not true. We can't carry with HP ammo, but we can own it, have it for home defense, and shoot it at the range.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 22, 2026 09:29 PM (n9ltV)

204 Well, now I have gone and done it. I found a Gamo 9X40 scope at a yard sale for $3, so it had to come home with me. Has a nice bright image to it. It came with dovetail-mount scope rings on it, and I had a steel dovetail strip lying around. So I just finished drilling a pair of holes in the dovetail to match a pre-existing pair of drilled and tapped holes on the top strap of my H&R model 922 9-shot revolver.

Scope is now mounted, and feels fairly secure. Plan is to go to the desert, aim at the bullseye on a paper target, and shoot a few rounds, and make appropriate adjustments to elevation and windage, and see of point of aim can merge with point of impact, at say 25 yards.

The gun came to me with the top strap drilled.

That deuce and a half in the film looks like an M211. Had a GM six cylinder engine and a Hydramatic. And the early Hydramatics used fluid couplings like that, not torque converters. A torque converter looks much like a fluid coupling, but has a third element, called the stator, placed between the pump and the turbine. When the turbine is moving much slower than the pump, the stator redirects oil flow to apply more pressure on the turbine vanes, permitting the turbine to spin slower than the engine, but with greater torque. Hence the name.

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at March 22, 2026 09:12 PM (xcxpd)

Oof. I started to read an article on expansion and such as to choosing your ammo. It was big on "impacting tissue" via the wound channel. Then he poo-pooed on "energy dump." I stopped reading there.

I thought, "Making a wound channel IS how you dump energy into the target." And, leaving a LOT of it behind is what you should be looking for.

If I have two bullets with the same muzzle energy, and they reach the target with the same energy, but one makes a big hole through the target and the other makes a small hole but expends all its energy and drops out the backside of said target... I'd say they're equal.

(Of course, they won't do that, barring magic. How any bullet will expend its energy is by expanding and colliding with tissue. That naturally leaves a wound channel.)

It's important to note that HPBT rifle bullets are technically hollow points, hence the HP in the name. These aren't defensive rounds but the hollow point is an artifact of the manufacturing process.

Diallou brought it up to the public's mind when there was an extensive investigation into that particular shooting. The whole fiasco began earlier under the Lindsay administration when effective hollowpoint bullets first became available (Super Vel and others)

Jim Cirillo was frustrated because he spent a lot of time crafting bullets and reloading at home--one design looked a lot like the Lehigh bullets sold today.

Someone traveling through is not someone that can claim home defense nor shooting it at a range. It is a kafka trap and good reason to avoid the state if traveling with firearms for self defense even relying on FOPA.

Ditto if you had to make a stop at Newark via air travel with a self defensive arm and magazines loaded with hollowpoints.

It is always best to plan for worst case legal scenario when traveling than the best with firearms.

Statute is primarily aimed at self defense ammo with some carveouts as CBD noted but that does not cause bail bond refunds, etc. if some cop decides to give you a bad day.

4th degree felony which would in fact bar you from firearm possession and purchase if convicted.

If you absolutely had to go through New Jersey on a car trip or via airline stop to somewhere else in New England with defensive arms, then I would suggest shipping the ammo and firearms to an FFL at your destination. Yeah, hassle, costs, and fees, but far cheaper than any criminal attorney would charge if things went pear shape.

NYC is bad about such matters too. Cottage industry in potting travelers passing through or unfortunately enough to be delayed at airports on transfers.

Given how I now hate to travel and view airlines as a seedier version of Greyhound busses when I was a yute, no reason for me to go through that shit. I will only travel to and from places that have reasonable firearm laws.
