The Morning Rant: Anonymity
Under our Constitution, anonymous pamphleteering is not a pernicious, fraudulent practice, but an honorable tradition of advocacy and of dissent. Anonymity is a shield from the tyranny of the majority. See generally J. Mill, On Liberty and Considerations on Representative Government 1, 3-4 (R. McCallum ed. 1947). It thus exemplifies the purpose behind the Bill of Rights, and of the First Amendment in particular: to protect unpopular individuals from retaliation-and their ideas from suppression-at the hand of an intolerant society. The right to remain anonymous may be abused when it shields fraudulent conduct. But political speech by its nature will sometimes have unpalatable consequences, and, in general, our society accords greater weight to the value of free speech than to the dangers of its misuse.
It is relatively simple for political and social elites to speak freely; they have walls, both figurative and literal, built around them by dint of their wealth or their government connection. It is exactly those people against whom anonymity is a powerful weapon, because their reach is far more powerful than the mere citizen. Entrance into the public sphere as a politician (or the quaint term: public servant), or commentator, or pundit, or as an entertainment figure immediately expands one's megaphone far beyond that of the citizen, and it also affords one the protection of the organized media, the state and, sadly, in many cases, the long arm of the state or media that reaches out to punish one's interlocutors. Against this we have one tool: anonymity. And who are the enemies of anonymity? Those who have other protections!
Here is a comment from a purported 1st Amendment lawyer, who thinks that anonymous speech should be held to a different standard. He was responding to some "famous" person whose name I barely know, but whose attack on anonymity is self serving and intellectually weak. I cited one obvious need for anonymity...The United Kingdom, which is busily imprisoning people for their speech! But there are countless others here in America that are powerful defenses of anonymity as one of the pillars of our free discourse in ideas. For example; "Whistleblowers" are sometimes self-serving and craven, but there are numerous examples of their importance in exposing government malfeasance. And our current legal and political structure was debated in The Federalist Papers by "Publius," (Hamilton, Madison, and Jay), and rebutted by "Federal Farmer," whose identity is still not certain after almost 240 years! If anonymity was an appropriate right to be exercised by those men, then it is certainly something worth defending. In spite of the technological advances since 1787, instant communication via the internet has changed nothing...we are all still pamphleteers! [Crossposted at CutJibNewsletter and X/Twitter]. In this article, from all the way back in last night, it says "Senate Republicans believe that President Trump is willing..." which is a bit different than "Trump wants". Further, the article says that it would be, effectively, failure theater for the Dems as they'd then use reconciliation to get the stuff the Dems object to.

You can get honesty.
But you can also get less reality. If you don't KNOW the person talking, they could be anyone....a fed, an op like Uncle Palpy or Q or a few other nics...could be a fuzzy legged foreigner proporting to be a citizen....could be a smart labrador retriever. Or a bot. Or AI soon enough, if not already.
I worked at MSFT back in the 90's and early 2000's and I realized early that anonymity is a lot of work with relatively little chance of success. Unless you go all Uncle Ted and go seriously off grid, the government knows who you are and what you post online.
So I decided back then to only post online under my own name (porn sites aside). If I wasn't willing to say it using my own name, maybe I should say it. Anonymity was a comforting lie anyway.

The hysterical news reports show pics that look like normal lines at busy times. Also, most show what appear to be lines at gates to get on the plane. That's past TSA security and would not be affected by any shutdown. I very strongly suspect this is a manufactured hysteria, as per usual.

At major hubs like Atlanta TSA lines were 5 hours long. They’re now back to normal thanks to the ICE agents. That wasn’t true everywhere but the major hubs all had very bad TSA wait times and those are all now resolved.

I had to pick up a friend, his mom and wife and gobs of luggage from the airport, so I rented a Toyota mini-van.

I will drive if the destination is in the continental US and I'm under no time pressure to arrive. I'd rather drive cross-country and have multiple hotel stays than fly.

Yes...travel is a liberty, and there are modes of travel that will afford you that liberty from most government interference. But you can't enforce personal anonymity on private corporations such as airlines. TSA is an interesting point though...

Most of us should be thrilled about our "white heritage". And not because of "white privilege", but because of the values with which we were raised. Plus on the IQ level we came out pretty high on the "totem pole" as well.
And besides the whiteness, there is the American identity those of us over 29 learned in schools and from other groups of old (Boy Scouts, DeMolay, even little league).

Agreed about the first two points, but expanding the strike zone is a non starter for me. I think they should simply move the strike zone up from the knees. That way there would be more line drives, more fielding, and perhaps fewer snoozer home run swings.

You're assuming the umpires are "bad" as in making bad mistakes. I don't think it's a coincidence that the (apparent) sudden uptick in terrible calls costing games and points took place at the same time as sports betting exploded.
I'm sure someone can run some AI program on all the games in all sports with active legal betting markets that had very controversial calls and compare the outcomes to the bet action. I will almost guarantee there will be some non-zero number for r.
