I like the detail on the mirror and really like the subtle use of color in the clothing. The relatively indistinct reflection of her face and hair is bothersome, discordant, against the more realistic features of the woman and furnishings. I don't know if that was deliberate.
I wouldn't hang it. There is a 'so what' quality, like a snap shot without context. It doesn't make the viewer, at least not this viewer, think of a story line to go with the image. It's not a bad painting, just not inspiring. Posted by: JTB at March 27, 2026 10:03 AM (yTvNw) 80

It's not likely for 1869, but it could be that the woman is with child but unmarried, and is looking mournfully at her expanding waistline -- knowing everybody will guess at her shameful condition.
Or it could be that the artist's sister *is* married and pregnant, and doesn't want to be for whatever reason. Maybe her doctor warned her, "One more child will kill you." OK, past 100. Forgive me for the post, but I needed the boost today:
I woke up about half an hour ago, and, as is my routine, checked for e-mail and texts, then pulled up The Comics Curmudgeon and Instapundit. Imagine my joy to see, before a 7.05am post from Stephen Green about the murder of Sheridan Gorman, a post from Sarah Hoyt noting that she is re-reading and enjoying my first novel, The Director's Cut! I don't know how to post a link, but it's there. Perhaps someone more savvy than I can mention it on the Book Thread? Anyway, perhaps I'll have more sales? The "end the war" stuff is just the simplest way to play both sides. That's why Dems have started the chant. Every day the war doesn't end they have the high ground. Then when it does they still have the high ground and Trump "listened" to them. It's not gonna go on nearly as long as people fear, I don't think. They already know. I just heard a funny story on the WOR 710 conservative Mark Simone program:
Trump uses a sharpie -and has for years- to sign things. They pass out a bunch of these after Trump signs a bill. Trump called up the CEO of Sharpie- who didn't believe it was Trump, at first and , "I like your pens, but they're kind of dull. Do you think you put a White House logo in gold (and maybe his name ) and the guy is doing it. I think that's hysterical and as Mark Simone said, "It will drive the lefty kooks up a wall." You think Trump has any intention of this lasting to even a month before the big 250th? Let alone anywhere near the midterms?
Nope. And I would bet a lot on it. Unless Israel and our deep intelligence here rolled him, which is *possible* but very unlikely. Israel has its own survival at stake. What Trump is demonstrating more than anything is true leadership, something sorely lacking in the modern world. To the point where people don't even recognize it until the shape is completely revealed. Putting his entire legacy on the line, and to some extent the future of the country, not to mention the hopes and cares of everyone who voted for him, all to do what he believes is right and will work. I have no problem with US forces "boots on the ground". That's where they belong.
At this point in the war, well, that's the next step, and it makes sense. They will go in there to remove the last vestiges of the islamic regime, the armed ground forces of the IRNG (or whatever, who cares?) which will allow the real people of Iran to come together in some sort of equitable governing system. And it's not like we are sending our boys to their certain deaths... quite the fucking opposite. They are the best trained and best equipped force ever seen. They won't be beaten. Yes, it's dangerous, and of course some may give their lives, but isn't that what war, and peace, is all about? Posted by: SSBN 656 (G) at March 27, 2026 11:03 AM (dmDsy) 248

Posted by: Maj. Healey at March 27, 2026 11:01 AM (abIsI) Intelligence isn't necessarily an important quality in any given position, any more than strength is. It's often a detractor. Most of our ruling class are borderline retarded, because most of them *have to be* for the system to keep working. Look, for instance, at Jim Comey and John Brennan. A couple of dull normals (to be generous, particularly in Brennan's case) heading up our spy agencies. Because Senate Democrats didn’t end up accepting the Republican offer on DHS funding & negotiations fell apart yesterday, Dems will get *zero* of the ICE reforms they had been demanding, including ones that GOP had already agreed to, like showing ID, increased Congressional oversight, agreements to not hit sensitive locations, etc. These reforms were the reason Dems started the shutdown in the first place, and now instead of getting a few concessions on their demand list, they get none. The only thing they secured was no funding for CBP & ICE, which are largely already funded via the OBBB, and Republicans will seek to fund them even further without Dem votes in reconciliation instead Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at March 27, 2026 11:12 AM (aBoGB) 261
