This painting is extraordinary. Guercino beautifully captured the elements of aging, especially in a man. The skin textures, how his hand and shoulder reflect the passing of youth with less muscle tone and wrinkled hands, the slight yellowing of the eyes, and the sunken eyes and cheeks, all make the impression. The details and natural coloration make this almost photographic.
Beyond the technical qualities of the painting, which are huge, Guercino provides an emotional aspect. The man is aged but not decrepit. The yearning in his expression doesn't feel sad but acknowledges the passing of his prime and possible losses in his life. There's memory and reflection but not despair. Maybe acceptance. I would hang this without hesitation. Most men my age would identify with this image and the feeling behind it. Love this Guercino doesn't really get his due. His nickname means "Squinty' - gotta love those Italians and their nicknames.
I love his work for its emotional intensity, dynamism and solid technique- a solid example of Italian Baroque. There's a Samson betrayed by Delilah by him in the Met that's spectacular. 100 percent would hang. Posted by: vivi at March 24, 2026 10:03 AM (OFw3k) 126

Underneath the hood, there's a world of smart software and machine learning models that power Halter's intelligence, turning raw data into insight that farmers can action. It's what enables the collars to guide & contain cattle, monitor their behaviour, detect when they might be ill and estimate pasture covers from satellite & weather data. Head Of An Old Man
Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Guercino) artuk org: Head of an old Man, Guercino (1591–1666), Ashmolean Museum, Oxford This boldly executed painting is probably an oil sketch made from the life as a study of physiognomy and expression. Although the man's gaze and the warm lighting suggest that Guercino had in mind a figure of a saint or a prophet, it is not connected with a final painting, nor is it a fragment of a finished work. The freedom of handling suggests a dating of c.1619–1620. A copy is in the Hermitage, St Petersburg. -- Painting reminds me of "Why me, Lord?" question from Job. There's another by same artist: Head of an Old Man in Profile, 17th century (Pen and brown ink on paper) Wonderful detail and light by the artist but I wouldn't hang this particular selection.
