Today was my first day taking care of the dog Ralphy, 14, who really hurt his leg the night before. I bought him what I thought was his last meal on the way to the vet.
He's on pills the vet assured takes care of the pain. He's still limping but so much better than yesterday. I'm carrying him up and down stairs and outside and inside so it heals nicely.
He's not the lightest thing but it's only a few weeks. That was my day without the Horde.

One thing about back when everyone was pounding cigarettes- there were a lot fewer land whales. Nicotine suppresses appetite on its own and combine it with it is harder to stuff your face when you are burning a camel non filter and it adds up.

I used to guide a Father - Son duo who were both cardiac surgeons. They both smoked more than I did. They both swore that it was only the unfiltered cigarettes that would get you.
Don't know if it was just cope. But, I never smoked a filtered cigarette after I met those two.

Now part of that is they lowered the standard on obesity... me at 6 ft 225 lbs? I'm Obese Class 1...
But even at 25? yeah, 8% body fat measured by the immersion test... same weight same height back then... was in NFL Linebacker type of shape.

It's possible -- just possible, now, but there has been some research on it -- that the substances the cigarette companies put into the white sticks to keep you addicted are the real danger. The nicotine may be addictive, yes, but it may also have analgesic properties. When I was working, if I got up feeling like I'd been wrestling instead of sleeping, a short pipe smoke would often smooth things out. Still does.
And it may be a coincidence. But I haven't had a single infection like a cold or the coof since 2022, about a year after I took the pipe up again.
Funny how nicotine is so demonized . . . but it's one of the few substances we can take which makes you *more* alert, instead of dulling your senses.

I still have my pipe from the mid-80s, $7 from the Ft. Bliss PX. I only quit as I was cracking my molars. All 3 on the top left, two on the bottom left, one each top/bottom on the right. At least I didn't murder anyone and just cracked the molars. GW1 wasn't good for my BP or stress levels, bit damn was that pipe good. 25% spiced generic, 25% cavendish, 50% generic standard.
Fuck. Now I want to go smoke a bowl. Still have my zippo, with my warrant officer insignia on it in the pouch with the pipe.

Unknown. Generic from the early 80s, sold on post in the AAAFES Px systrm. Very good shape. It lived (during use) in a padded leather tobacco pouch, and still resides there 40 years later. Everytime i run across it, i open the pouch and the smell of that tobacco mix, gives me a very pleasant flash back to my early warrant officer days before gw1.

Weight loss sucks. Keeping it off sucks. Being as weird as I am about food is obnoxious. I try to make great tasting, healthy meals, but to be honest there are plenty of times where it’s just about the nutrition and nothing else. Those meals are not sexy. Being as weird as I am about working out is also obnoxious. But I will never go back to the size I was. I understand why people would want an easier path, or give up. I certainly had a lot of trials before I realized my entire relationship with food had to change.

I have a pipe from The Guildhall Model-30. Beautiful Burl. Lightly bent stem. Perfect pipe, imo.
A Straight stem Bakelite w/ a plain wood bowl. Very Deco, that one. Shallow bowl, though. So, short smoker.
And a Meerschaum straight Amber stem with a relatively deep Soapstone Bowl (?) that is a good for a Long Smoke.

Weight loss sucks. Keeping it off sucks. Being as weird as I am about food is obnoxious. I try to make great tasting, healthy meals, but to be honest there are plenty of times where it’s just about the nutrition and nothing else. Those meals are not sexy. Being as weird as I am about working out is also obnoxious. But I will never go back to the size I was. I understand why people would want an easier path, or give up. I certainly had a lot of trials before I realized my entire relationship with food had to change.

Yeah. Spent 8 hours being tested before the doctor would agree to prescription. 30 mg upon waking, 20 mg aound 2:30 in afternoon. Sleep at 9:30.
Ate two small meals a day. Never felt hungry.

I had a huge glass ashtray from an uncle that stole it from a US Embassy someplace overseas. Was about 12" in diameter and had the great seal formed into the bottom of it.

You should know I am the biggest geek ever. I don’t smoke, never have. I have never done illegal drugs. I very rarely drink - especially now because of the calories. Boring is the word!

Sugar is evil but carbs are the true enemy. Look at proteins with zero carbs. Do you like cheese and crackers? Break the crackers in half so you cut your carbs by half. Lots of low carb options for stuff now.
Also protein and exercise go together. More nuts, more dairy (heavy whipping cream in coffee) make you full.
And fasting. Pick a fast day (I choose Friday because I'm Catholic). Nothing crazy, have a light breakfast and then wait until dinner. Lowers BG and burn calories.

1) I'm a light sleeper. I know my husband does not have apnea.
2) I'm pretty sure that it's not the Ozempic per se that helps apnea, but rather the weight loss, which can be done without Ozempic.
3) I think we pretty much know that Ozempic causes muscle wasting, which I suspect IS NOT GOOD FOR A PERSON'S HEART MUSCLE!

I mean, what do you want to know? Lots of Catholic apologetics out there. Look up Scott Hahn on youtube and you can see how he went from a rising star in the Reformed movement to staunch Catholic. Taylor Marshall was also a Protestant who converted. I keep seeing this Joshua Charles guy on X who is a bit younger and may relate better.
If things continue to calm down here, I'm planning on being and OCIA sponsor in the fall (that's how people come into the Catholic Church). I'm a convert, and was a sponsor in 2016. I really enjoyed it, but it took up a lot of time and my wife said I couldn't do it until 1) the kids grew up and 2) I was out of the Guard. So now I can!
