Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Morning Rant![]() So it was in Virginia. Since the Democrats took over in January, Virginia has been passing new gun control laws. There is HB-217, which bans "assault weapons" and magazines over 15 rounds. This one has plenty of exemptions, mostly for cops and soldiers and some grandfather clauses. Another bill, however, was different and got much less publicity. That one had a straight-up exemption for Virginia's new rulers. That was HB-110. HB-110 is a bill that imposes new penalties on leaving guns in cars. When the bill was introduced by the Virginia House, it was fairly simple:No person shall leave, place, or store any handgun, as defined in § 18.2-307.1, in any unattended motor vehicle when such handgun is visible to any person who is outside such unattended motor vehicleThe bill itself was half a page long and contained only four points. One defined what an "unattended motor vehicle" is, the second is quoted above, the third describes the penalty for violation ($500) and the fourth declared that any vehicle association with a violation of the new law is legally considered to be "illegally parked" and subject to tow. That's it. Start to finish, it was 23 lines long including preamble. Good law or bad, it was at least simple and internally consistent. Then the amendments got underway. After a couple of months had passed, the bill quadrupled in length. They added boats to the definition of "motor vehicle." They added differing rules for requirements that any handgun left in a vehicle must not only be "out of sight" as it was in the original bill, but also locked in a rigid box. They added exemptions, of course, for cops and the like - including off-duty and retired cops. But there was another very special exemption slipped in through the amendment process: The provisions of this section shall not apply to any member of the General Assembly who leaves a handgun in an unattended motor vehicle pursuant to § 18.2-308.7:1 when such vehicle is parked in any parking structure reserved for members of the General Assembly under § 2.2-1172.Ah, how nice for them. They get to bring their guns to work and leave them in the car when they park - but you can't. They're better than you, you see. They're Assemblymen. They simply can't abide by the rules they lay down for mere peasants. It wouldn't be right. The only thing that stopped them was a Senator. In that chamber, senator Richard Stuart - a Republican, took them to task for this carve-out. He was somewhat successful. While the Virginia Senate did eventually pass a version of the bill along party lines, it was much more similar to the original House bill. The Senate version is fairly similar to the original House version, with some changes. Most of the additions were removed, including the special exemption for Virginia's munificent and honorable leaders. The House then passed it largely along party lines. The special exemption for Virginia Assemblymen failed, but that the House thought it appropriate is telling. That the only reason that exemption wasn't in the final bill likely comes down a Senator dressing them down in a public forum for considering it is hardly comforting. This is not a shining example of the system working. This is a shining example of the arrogance and entitlement of a ruling class with unmasked and unbridled contempt for those they consider to be their subjects. It took a while, but royalty and aristocracy are thoroughly back in fashion. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The rulers impose - as the name implies - rules, but the rules do not apply to the rulers themselves. Rules are for the subjects, not the rulers. The rulers get the authority to make and enforce rules, and - thanks to their royal prerogatives, Party privileges or whatever nomenclature is popular in the style of the time - get to ignore them.

I know many here think all Feds are evil parasites, but some of us actually worked for a living. Anyway, I remember when we used to go on travel for conferences, by which I mean REAL conferences with our peers, not the disguised vacations politicians go on.
Anyway, we flew steerage, and had to stay in what were often pretty horrible hotels far from the site, which then necessitated renting a car, with all the attendant waste of time. We had to fly connecting flights through lesser airports, etc. So what, you say? Do you think for even a second that the people who made those rules abided by them? If so, I have a bridge for sale. It took a while, but royalty and aristocracy are thoroughly back in fashion.
Most people, given a bit of power, want more. Given a bit of power for a limited amount of time, they want the time extended. Only by regular removal of elected, or appointed, officials and by refusing to vote for their progeny, can aristocracy be halted. Confused. "Aristocratic" and "Royal" are not synonymous. In fact, throughout history, aristocracies and monarchies have been at one another's throats. This gets missed in our history classes all too often, but it's a commonplace of world history.

Proposed Amendment:
Any law, passed to constrain the freedoms of the affected, must apply to Congress, only and without change, for two years. Then it must apply to all government persons, only and without change, for two years. Then it may be applied to the populace. Any law, passed to increase the freedoms of the affected, must apply to the populace first for two years without change, then the government, excluding Congress, for two years without change, then Congress. If a bill is passed which purports to increase freedoms when it, in fact, curtails them, shall be classified as treason and all members of Congress who voted for the Act shall be put to death. Posted by: Elric The Blade at March 18, 2026 11:09 AM (iFTx/) I'd suggest the point of the bill wasn't the original bill at all - it was the amendments. They draft a perfectly reasonable - but entirely unnecessary - bill. There's no freakout because who would object to something so 'reasonable?' Then, with a not-divisive bill in play, they amend the crap out of it in order to insert the things they really want - the things which ARE objectionable. The original is just the vehicle by which they get what they want: Virginia conservatives one step closer to dead. Posted by: Washington Nearsider at March 18, 2026 11:12 AM (G1ktt) 32

I was in high school a few miles up the road when Columbine happened. It didn't seem important me then, or since. Druggie dorks freaked out and shot a bunch of kids. It was horrible, but it was truly a local crime story. Even with my proximity, I didn't know anyone who was shot at, let alone shot. I knew a couple rugby guys who were on the premises that day, and that's just because of intramural sports.
We had another school shooting later, at the school I ended up graduating from, but shortly after I did. I did know the families of the kids killed/raped there. I still didn't consider it a national story, and it wasn't. Nobody outside of that community cared about it at all - even 35 minutes away at Columbine. There was something about that particular shooting that resonated with people in a way they never did before or after. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at March 18, 2026 11:27 AM (BI5O2) 78

It was the first really well publicized school shooting, and for a lot of us the first one we'd ever heard of. Newsom is lying but there’s a kernel of truth to what he says.
The migration out of Florida has been mainly at the top and bottom of the income scale. For Lower middle class workers it’s impossible to get ahead there so they’re leaving in droves. For the ultra rich the taxes are unbeatable so they’re leaving as well. But for the upper middle class, they’re not leaving for the most part. And those people are still moving TO California. Tech bros making $250k+ a year will put up with the filth because those jobs don’t exist anywhere else for that pay plus the potential to win the lottery with stock options. It’s worth staying staying for them. And the tech startup scene in the Bay Area simply doesn’t exist anywhere else at such scale. Posted by: Heroq at March 18, 2026 11:32 AM (RD49f) 96

Bowling for Columbine is what, IMO, made Columbine such a big international story.
The shooting was bad enough, but then it was glamorized and made into a cause celebre for the left and gun control. All right at the time when social media and alternative news was becoming a thing. Had the shooting happened just 10 years earlier -- maybe even 5 -- it might have been much less infamous and influential. Perfect storm. It's also interesting that most of what is told about Columbine is not true. Posted by: Elric The Blade at March 18, 2026 11:34 AM (iFTx/) 102

JUST IN: The US Navy is investigating whether sailors aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford deliberately set fire to their own ship to end the deployment.
Ya know what, that's fucking integrity and honor if they did. Takes a strong personal moral compass and beliefs tbh. It's probably because it have been on the sea longer than the 6 months planned and not political. The sailors want to go home. I wonder if anything political happened recently that caused their deployment to be extended? Surely it's not because of Trump's Operation Epstein Fury? This excuse is less shameful than accepting that a small, backward country damaged their superior ship with inferior projectiles. The US military has been ineffective against middle eastern goat herders since the 80s and I still endlessly hear, “hew hew hew, Iran ‘bout to find out why we don’t have free healthcare, hew hew hew” Under normal conditions I would disapprove of mutiny like this, but this is not normal. Per Panam news, the new president of Chile has implemented a wide net to pick up offenders with open warrants, as the previous government of Gabriel Boric was too busy spending money to do it.
In three days, the government of José Antonio Kast apprehended 2,905 fugitives from justice through a nationwide operation carried out by the Carabineros and the Chilean national Investigative Police . The goal was to bring citizens wanted for homicide, violent robberies, and sex crimes into custody. The figure includes the capture of 2,411 men and 494 women, 97% of whom had active warrants against them. In addition, both agencies also seized marijuana, ketamine, vehicles, and weapons. This is partially because the argument of sovereignty, who gets to make the rules but not have them apply, has never been settled in the US. At this point the de facto sovereigns are the pols because the voters weren't paying attention when said pols first exempted themselves. Obviously, the voters do need to abide by laws, but the pols do too, so neither group is truly sovereign. I argue that the *Constitution* was intended to be The Sovereign with congress acting essentially as regents.

I want to be very clear that I am absolutely serious about the black supremacy angle. I am not being sarcastic. The point of decarceration is not to empty the prisons in general; it is to empty them of non-whites in particular, and especially blacks.
But someone has to be held accountable for someone being shot. So if the trigger-puller can't be held accountable, because he's a black ubermensch, then a white untermensch must be found to hold to account -- such as the one whose gun, having been stolen from his vehicle, was ultimately used by an attempted murderer. That's the real point. Democrats are *obsessed* with race. There is always a poorly-hidden angle. Posted by: SciVo at March 18, 2026 11:59 AM (Sy6m/) 188

Reliable estimates from nonpartisan sources like Pew Research Center, Center for Migration Studies (CMS), and others indicate that a high fraction of this population is in the workforce, often higher than the native-born population due to demographics (they are disproportionately working-age adults, especially men). Key recent data points include: In 2022–2023 estimates (from Pew and related analyses), about 74–75% of unauthorized immigrants were employed. For example, one detailed breakdown showed 74.1% employed, 3.1% unemployed (but seeking work), and 22.8% not in the labor force (e.g., students, caregivers, retirees, or disabled). Labor force participation (employed or actively seeking work) is typically in the 75–78% range for the overall unauthorized population (ages 16+). Among those in the labor force, the employment rate is very high (often 95%+ employed vs. unemployed), reflecting strong work attachment despite barriers like limited legal protections....These figures are higher than for the US-born population in many cases, particularly for prime-working-age men. The largest narrative around the SAVE Act's issues with people getting IDs is around married women who change their names.
Married women majority vote Republican. Their arguments make no sense. --- There's some gal running for office in TX that claims that her "friend" got married and right after the marriage, her husband took the marriage license but didn't file it, he went to the Social Security office changed her name, they went on honeymoon where he beat her, she came back, got the marriage annulled but now she can't ever vote b/c her name change b/c she can't get the marriage license. Actual lawyers are chiming in on how none of that could have happened. -Marriage isn't legal (and can't be annulled) until the certificate is filed. -SS office only accepts a filed and stamped copy of the certificate to change name. -Any annulment would include a name reversion. -Legal name change is simple in TX, even if not included in annulment. The same information that needs to be presented to verify citizenship is the same information that you need to get the Real ID. Hasn't everyone already done that? Should be no problem verifying citizenship with the Real ID Drivers License.

There is no way libertarianism can work as long as the welfare state exists.
Yes most elected libertarian types argue they can't wait for the welfare state to be removed to implement other libertarian goals. So this leads to insanity like LPers bringing in immigrants to go straight on to welfare where they will vote for Democrats. Posted by: The left at March 18, 2026 12:27 PM (sKqQm) 301

If you notice, these types rarely, if ever, run for an office where you have to be an executive and the hard choices of governance show up. You occasionally get a washed up type like Bill Weld who was NOT a libertarian governor of MASS and in fact was a former prosecutor, who ran for Libertarian VP who upon losing promptly became GOP again, and you have former NM governor Gary Johnson as a hybrid type when he was NM governor. 312 Did it all really change with Columbine or when we watched “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and rid of mental institutions?
Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit My Brother Ron by Clayton Cramer answers all your questions but no. One Flew Over did not affect things nearly as much as court rulings and the massive increasing state costs of maintaining custodial care of mentally ill patients. Lawsuits and the threat of court actions led to sue and settle agreements in many states and the rest capitulated. All during the late sixties to seventies. Made it easy for state legislators to push care off to neighborhood clinics and then simply not fund those neighborhood clinics and but also do a massive downsizing of the mental health hospitals with custodial care. Essentially, this is the rise of the street people--mentally ill, substance abuse, and unwilling to behave in shelters. All due to a distorted idea of compliance with drug regimens by the mentally ill, shredding of social networks by behaviors of those with substance abuse and mental illness, and a tendency to self medicate.
