Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Night ONT - March 18, 2026 [TRex] Good evening Horde. The time has come for very random mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety. Did I mention the shenanigans were random? They are indeed random. Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Leave Tucker, Megyn, Candace and anyone similar to threads elsewhere. Your reward is an open bar with as much virtual alcohol as JQ can serve. [Top photo credit: B&O Railroad Museum, Baltimore, MD]![]() In the summer of 2019, a young girl by the name of Bethan was visiting Poole Museum with her mom. While exploring all the site had to offer, she and her mother began to discuss what museums do and why. Inspired by her visit, Bethan felt eager to support the museum's collection. She decided to donate her most precious treasure, something that she felt was appropriately significant and valuable: her favorite rock. Curators placed Bethan's Rock in a glass cabinet, just like many of the museum's other valuable artifacts, where visitors are now able to appreciate the piece as much as Bethan once did.The rock donated by five year old Bethan became a social media phenomenon in 2021 after showing up on a Reddit post. If you're ever in Poole, stop by and have a look. Admission to the museum is free (but I doubt they're taking more rock donations). ![]()
Oddly, he was not a member of the band, did not play on the actual studio recording of the song, and reportedly did not write the song or contribute musically to the track's composition or production.
At the time of the video, the band itself only had two members - Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn (a third, Bruce Wooley, was involved when the song was written but was not with the band at the time of the video). Horn handled vocals, bass and guitar and Downes played keyboards. But the guy playing keyboards in the frame above wasn't Geoff. It was a cameo by a keyboard player that Horn knew and worked with in London in the late 1970s.
Who was the guy? Hans Zimmer. You might have heard of him. He went on to compose soundtracks to many movies, including like The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, Crimson Tide, Gladiator, Batman, the Dark Knight, Inception, The Last Samurai, No Time to Die, Dune, Rush (the racing movie, not the Canadian trio), Top Gun:Maverick and more. What's your favorite Zimmer score?
Three jars of standard peanut butter costs $1246.
Five vials of Organic Contaminants in Smokers' Urine (Frozen) costs $1854. (For the record, frozen organic contaminants in non-smokers is the same price.)
Four 70 gram jars of baby food composite costs $1246.

I love Hans' Zimmer's soundtrack in the Batman Trilogy. My favorite is "Like A Dog Chasing Cars" from The Dark Knight. It's a wonderful piece that builds tension, then really unleashes it at full throttle.

Anna Puma, when I was stationed at Edwards, 1980 or so, they test fired an A-10 gun on the ground right across the taxiway from our program. Tightly secured with cables. I think it was a 10 round burst which lifted the aircraft off the ground a couple of inches! I strolled over and got an empty cartridge case. I just looked at it and the markings are not decipherable. But the projectiles didn't explode when they hit the embankment. That was long ago. Thanks for the updated info!

—— The assumption was, the Soviets were not capable of such things. Sputnik weighed 184 pounds. The top scientists in the US thought somebody must have dropped a decimal in the translation. 18.4 pounds was believable, maybe. 184 pounds meant they had heavy lift capability. One thing it did do, that secretly relieved Eisenhower. The path of Sputnik put it right over the US. Prior to that, there was some legal questions, internationally speaking, about overflights. Aircraft were right out, considered sovereign airspace or whatever. But, the Soviets couldn’t complain about our satellites overflying the Soviet Union very well, now could they? The precedent had been set. The Democrats made hell for Eisenhower over this issue, politically speaking. Lyndon Johnson particularly, and later, JFK against Nixon. In those days, it was a contest to brand the other guy as “soft” on communism for electoral purposes. Posted by: Common Tater at March 18, 2026 10:31 PM (B4klT) 102
BTW, putting the A-10 over Iran is going to complicate the tanker plan. Ugh. We had to slow almost 100 knots and put down flaps if we had much gas onboard. With a couple now out of commission, even more so.
(I could make it work, but it would limit the number of "Hey, I've got extra gas. I'm going to loiter and offload to anyone needing it" scenarios.) Posted by: GWB at March 18, 2026 10:32 PM (EbSRB) 103
Afroman was not amused and put out a song and video titled "Lemon Pound Cake."
The video was ostensibly to earn money to pay for the damage. It took issue with the officers involved and used his own security footage. Video footage showed police ramming down his door, searching his wardrobe, opening CD cases, and at one point briefly glancing at a lemon pound cake on his counter. Thus the name of the song... Seven officers sued him over the video on defamation grounds. These cops are gay and retarded, and deserve to be hounded not just out of law enforcement but civil society at large. Also, chicks should not be cops. Especially ones that cry on the stand. Posted by: As if law enforcement isn't in enough disrepute at March 18, 2026 10:32 PM (TbWk/) 104

A guy I worked with worked at Edwards when they were developing the GAU-8, the gun the A-10 was built around. They test fired the thing right next to the building he worked in. When they set it up.outside, the word would go through his building, and lots of people would come out to watch.
He made the acquaintance of one of the techs, who told him that the original test fire had all the slugs going through the same hole - it was too accurate. They redesigned it to "scatter" the shots out to about a 15" diameter. Posted by: buddhaha at March 18, 2026 10:46 PM (qiHcY) Posted by: LRob in OK at March 18, 2026 10:47 PM (7D3Aa) 158

My favorite thing I've heard about the A-10 was from the Sean Ryan Show, where a former pilot told was describing the function of the cannon. While it carries a lot of ammo, it also burns through it all in something like ten seconds. So they have a specific training mantra to get the timing right, in order to get enough hits on a target, but still leave enough for four or five other targets.

My most recent web search: "can polish sausage be baked like a pork chop"
I'm about to bake.. well actually it's some kind of thin bone-in pork steak, because it was cheaper this time, but whatever. There was too much for one pan the other day, so in doing the remainder today (which is why I don't have the wrapper with the label), there's room for a kielbasa that I keep forgetting to prepare. And the Brave AI answer was a resounding, "Yes!!" Just poke some holes in the casing so it doesn't burst, maybe brush it with some oil, turn it once, and it doesn't even need to reach a specific temp since it's pre-cooked. Just bake until nicely browned. Nice. Posted by: SciVo at March 18, 2026 11:03 PM (Sy6m/) 192
We visited the B & O Museum a long time ago when the kids were small. 3 minutes in while gawking at the trains in the wheelhouse I can't put eyes on my young son. Start checking every coach and engine in the wheelhouse and ... no son. I backtracked to the front entrance (a long walk) and there he is, cute as a button, charming the security desk and other museum visitors. Got the stinkeye from most of them for being a negligent father.

One Islamic family's immigration story in the USA. It is easily confused with the classic late 19th century immigration tales of arriving with nothing, working hard, assimilating, and becoming the seed that would flower over the generations, provided you overlook the fraud, theft, sharia law and culture that ended up in the murders of two daughter's husbands and a close friend, an Iranian woman who defied the liberating middle eastern culture. Given the massive fraud in Minnesota, the ROP terrorists attacks, how immigration is working out in England, and the current dust up with Iran it all seems relevant. I take it as learing moment.

Nothing humorous to add. The NIST standards are real materials that are used by industry, academia, and governmental labs to assure that instruments and testing procedures are working correctly. All of them have a purpose needed in commerce. Each one of the standards has a certification sheet that relates how each standard is to be used. Without them, the numbers quoted by analysts could not be compared and would there would be complete chaos in the "testing world". NIST gets requests for developing specific standards and does extremely elaborate internal testing to assure each standard. I believe the organization started with weights and measures eons ago. In a previous life, I used the X-ray diffraction standards in my work.

I can get 190 in jersey. I use it to make shellac for french polishing. Jersey of all places.
Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads ----- Yep. Connecticut and Vermont are the other NE states that allow it. The whole Atlantic coast all the way to SC, along with PA are 151 only. That's an expensive way to make shellac; you're paying big bucks for the drinking tax. But, the hoops required by the BATF to get an industrial license are probably not worth it. Almost every frat at school.had their own secret stash of 190, used for spiking punch or whatever. Any ChemE student knew how to get around the BATF inspectors when they ran a batch of ethanol. There were multiple testing taps on the distilling setup, and one inspector. Nobody needs to get into the locked, logged storage room with the multiple 55gal barrels full of the stuff. At some point, if the Iranian regime is truly in free-fall towards termination - the only result that is not just kicking the can, although it's a very robust kick to be sure - they'll almost certainly go after the softest/most valuable targets, energy infrastructure. Of course. The obvious Samson move.
The implication that somehow this conflict can be kept within artificial bounds, where certain things are off-limits, is delusional, and dangerous. Trump's second post on the Pars gas field thing, while characteristically a bit odd, is at least much better than the one earlier today. In that he said the Israeli strike *was* known/OK to the US (a separate head-scratcher here), but the concerning bit was where he said he thought Iran had gotten the "message" - and that more such attacks would follow if they didn't behave. I felt transported to the late 60s (minus the gas prices). Posted by: rhomboid at March 19, 2026 12:55 AM (U/Byj) 312

We don't need to be engaged in regime change, or controlling the flow of commerce as long as we have our own resources. Let the EU and NATO and the UN and our middle eastern partners handle their own shit. The goal, the endgame here, was the threat of nuclear and ballistic missiles, and a threat to our security. Pull back. Resupply. Let it play out. If we're targeted, reengage. Chances are we won't do that because we are being handsomely paid. Posted by: Rev. Wishbone at March 19, 2026 01:11 AM (M9gjJ) 321
