Let's not forget An Irish Pub Song by the Rumjacks.
Catchy chorus goes something like this: Whale, oil, beef, hooked! I swear upon the holy book, The only 'craic' you'll get is a slap in the ear, Whale, oil, beef, hooked! Saw The Pogues on St. Patty's Day in NYC. Three nights before Shane MacGowan had fallen off the stage in Boston and broken his knee. Did the entire show I saw from a wheelchair. St. Patrick's Day (AI Overview)
Transition from Church to Party: Pub Ban Repeal: Until 1961, Irish law prohibited pubs from opening on St. Patrick's Day. By the 1980s, pubs were open, but the modern party-heavy atmosphere had not yet fully matured. Influence of the Diaspora: The party-heavy, parade-focused, green-beer celebration was largely an American invention created by Irish immigrants, which was later re-imported back to Ireland. The 1990s Shift: The modern, multi-day, large-scale St. Patrick's Festival was not established in Dublin until 1996, specifically designed to showcase Irish culture to the world and drive tourism. Marillion's "Clutching At Straws" is a concept album about a drunkard reflecting on his life.
Last 3 songs: https://youtu.be/ijmJNsYTFIE https://youtu.be/ecUWafiuj3c https://youtu.be/5tZtYtoVnLw Their label didn't like the downer ending: And if you ever come across us don't give us your sympathy You can buy us a drink and just shake our hands And you'll recognize by the reflection in our eyes That deep down inside we're all one and the same We're clutching at straws We're still drowning Clutching at straws..... So they said to change it so it would have "a happy ending." So they added a final track, literally named "Happy Ending." Which is just a short, creepy laugh. Born today in 1943, Jim Pons is a bassist who played with The Turtles and Frank Zappa. As The Turtles' third bassist, he missed out on their massive #1 hit "Happy Together," which was arranged and performed by their second bassist Chip Douglas. However, you might as well refresh your memory now, to use it as a basis for comparison:
The Turtles - Happy Together https://youtu.be/BqZ6sRHpWIk After Douglas got poached for his arrangement skill and Pons replaced him, The Turtles made a concept album pretending be 11 different bands, on The Turtles Present The Battle Of The Bands, with each song in a different style. Naturally, one of those bandsonas was in their own style, and "Elenor" was basically a parody of "Happy Together," done as a dig at their label for pestering them to repeat its success; in a twist, it was good enough to become a top-ten hit in its own right: The Turtles - Elenore https://youtu.be/_NCd0Y776VQ Cont. Cont.
After The Turtles broke up, Jim Pons joined his neighbor and friend Frank Zappa in his band The Mothers Of Invention, called such because the label made him change its name "out of necessity." (I could tell you that here's where things get complicated, but I already said that Zappa was involved.) Similarly, although The Turtles lead singer Howard Kaylan and backup singer Mark Volman also joined the band, for legal purposes they were treated as the Phlorescent Leech (or Flo for short) and Eddie. Zappa was heavily involved in some kind of satirical fake rockumentary "200 Motels," purporting to be about the touring musician life. "Fillmore East - June 1971" is inspired by the film project and in the same vein, so much of the album is basically an extended negotiation with some groupies, trying to convince them that they're big enough stars (with big enough dicks) to be worth having sex with. At one point, they sing "Happy Together," with Flo & Eddie implicitly pretending to be who they really are, and Jim Pons playing Chip Douglas's part on bass: Frank Zappa - Happy Together (Live At Fillmore East, June 1971) https://youtu.be/6ztmHcQTYHo Posted by: SciVo at March 14, 2026 09:27 PM (Sy6m/) 172

Our wedding anniversary is St. Patrick's Day. Because it was the Saturday of my future husband's spring break from college. Honeymoon in NOLA was insane as they have a parade for anything.
Irish is also our only common ancestry. We used to go out for dinner at a favorite French bistro in FL. Street party. Then we'd walk up the street to an Irish pub where most of the drunks were gathered. It was our last time to go out on our anniversary with the amateur drinkers. I was in a pale green linen suit and was reaching up to catch beads (like Mardi Gras) from the roof of the pub. A guy behind me with a Guiness was reaching at the same time and spilled his beer down my jacket and skirt. Took forever to get that dark beer out of linen, but I still have the suit. We decided to stay home after that on our big day and have dinner on another day to celebrate.Mostly Irish Shepherd's Pie (with a cheddar mashed potato topping). I make Irish soda bread for his breakfast. Will be 47yrs on Tuesday! Still crazy about him, we've had fun!
