Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Rosanna Arquette Attacks Quentin Tarantino for Use of the N-Word as "Racist and Creepy," Tarantino Snipes Back That She's Irrelevant, Old, and Looking for Headlines to Advertise a New Movie She DirectedI find Tarantino's constant use of the n-word annoying as I find many of his "I'm so cool" tics annoying. But racist? No, not if you know anything about him. He had no father. His mother dated a black guy. Without any other male role model, Tarantino copied this black guy's mannerisms and sayings. Whenever you hear a Tarantino character say something that sounds "black", like "we got everything here from a diddle-eyed-joe to a damned-if-I-know," that is probably a direct lift from this black guy that Tarantino took as a surrogate father. Why do Tarantino characters constantly reference blaxploitation movies? Why does Tarrantino have an encyclopedic knowledge of blaxploitation movies, and regards them as high art? Because Tarantino used to watch those movies with this black guy. So why does Tarantino say the n-word all the time? Because he heard his surrogate father figure always using it, and he thought it sounded so cool. And he's a lonely geek who has always sought ways to seem cool. Does that get him a pass? Well, I don't even know if a "pass" is needed to use a word in an artistic medium, particularly when we hear every single black male celebrity saying it, but yeah, if a pass is even needed, I'd say that gets him a pass. Should he have also cut out Hans Lanza saying "Jew" and "Jews are like rats" in Inglorius Basterds? Or is it singularly the n-word that is off limits? The guy is annoying, no doubt. And his thing with feet is fetishistic. But racist? He hero-worships a black guy his mom used to date and imitates him in what they tell me is the highest form of flattery. That's racist now, too? Tell me -- what is not racist, now, exactly? Rosanna Arquette, meanwhile, is trash. She has always been a famewhore and liar. You may have heard that Toto's song "Rosanna" was written for or about Rosanna Arquette. If you heard that, you heard that ultimately from Rosanne Arquette, who put that lie around the media to make her -- then an unknown actress -- seem important. In fact, the guys from Toto say the song was written about a member's girlfriend, not Arquette. The song was called "Rochelle" or something -- whatever her name was -- but that didn't fit the meter. They met Rosanna Arquette, realized "Rosanna" fit the three-beat meter, and changed the song title to that. That doesn't make the song "for" her or "about" her. She just had a name with three syllables they thought would make a better lyric than "Rochelle." As they say, "that bitch road our coattails for twenty years." That's all you really have to know. And I have to warn you again: it's slow in the beginning, just set-ups and silliness without laughs. It all pays off at the end. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

A thing I find funny is that if you look up anyone, including actresses and actors, like for instance Rosanna Arquette you will get all contemporary photos of her. You have to scroll a bajillion pages, a long time, or use specific date ranges in the search to not get pruney decrepit septuagenarian pictures. Never any period photos even for actresses known for their looks at a certain time.
I don't think it always did that. But it certainly does now. Why? Do the internets think we're stalkers and need current up-to-date photos for positive identification. I mostly don't even care what they look like now. Posted by: banana Dream at March 12, 2026 05:04 PM (vV9qP) 76

Tarantino has an affection for gritty grindhouse type movies. He used to work in a video store, and that contributed to his encyclopedic film knowledge. So in a way, he sort of makes the kind of movies he would enjoy watching himself.
Personally, I like most of his movies, with the exception of Django and Hateful Eight. As far as Rosanna Arquette goes, she was happy to be in Pulp Fiction at the time, so her bitching about the N word now seems insincere. Some people like that, others don't. Another funny series is Vicar of Dibley (even if a slight bit woke). And Lineham was a writer on Father Ted which is even more absurdist comedy. Hit or miss as to whether you find that style of comedy funny or not. Like Monty Python, you will like the IT Crowd and Father Ted. Posted by: whig at March 12, 2026 05:08 PM (E4rtv) 100

Same difference in the British "The Office" starring Ricky Gervais compared to the American "The Office" with Carrey. Carrey is a likable goof along with the rest of the cast. The British comedy with Gervais is playing it straight while being a right bastard so that the audience laughs at him rather than the situation. And his office has not so lovable misfits as the American version. I prefer the British version myself. Posted by: whig at March 12, 2026 05:26 PM (E4rtv) 170

Tarantino is like The Cramps - I love a lot of his movies, but I also love the call back to often overlooked fringe and low art stuff from the past. He is not just talented, but he appreciates the history. Not just in the themes and actors, but in the way he uses language. It feels like he recorded in his mind every little bit of interesting culture and pumped it into his movies.
The problem is, that font ran dry and I still like him, but not in the same way (for example the Diddle eye joe line the Ace mentioned was used in a couple of his movies.) The Cramps were like that - at their concerts they played the most greatest and offbeat songs from the 50s that I had never heard of. I have a whole series of (I think Rhino?) albums - Songs the Cramps Taught us. Same with Tarantino - on his earlier movies I would watch, and then want to watch a dozen other movies that inspired it. That's pretty my only thought on Arquette. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 12, 2026 05:19 PM (n9ltV) I met her the the summer of 1982, shortly after my bff and I moved to LA. A photographer (I think his last name Hagopian) liked my friend and somehow was connected to Toto and through them, knew Roseanna. The three of us were literally walking on Ventura Blvd. and Roseanna was walking the other way. He introduced us and after we parted ways, he told us that was the "Roseanna" of the song. She was cute but sort of a hippy (and this was the preppy era). I was more impressed with her relationship to Uncle Charlie Weaver. Posted by: LASue at March 12, 2026 05:34 PM (lCppi) 193

I looked up this "star of Pulp Fiction"'s picture to see. Still doesn't ring a bell, but I imagine she was Bruce Willis' wife. Posted by: t-bird at March 12, 2026 05:55 PM (+qfnT) 279

269 "Eggplant," was an ad-lib by Hopper, "Cantaloupe," was an ad-libbed response by Walken.
Posted by: davidt Oh. that's right. It has been a long time since I saw it. Supports my comment though - Walken, being italian, should have responded like someone had just called him a c--n, not someone calling him some random vegetable. 273 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is in my top 10 of movies I'll gladly watch over and over again.
Posted by: LASue at March 12, 2026 05:54 PM (lCppi) The last 20 minutes or so is probably my favorite section of any Tarrantino film. It's almost cathartic just watching Tex and the two girls get beaten to hell, mauled, and fried to a crisp. It's really the easiest Tarrantino film to watch, nothing too outrageous or crazy until the end when you're just waiting to see how it all ends up. And I only recently figured out that (a really cute) Sidney Swinney plays the girl at the screendoor of the main house when Brad Pitt (Cliff) goes to Spahn Ranch. Yeah but... in that world? They're just crazy hippies who came into his house, not infamous murder cult. He would have had the book thrown at him and never seen the light of day again. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 12, 2026 06:02 PM (PYyV9) I dunno. Tex had a gun, the girls had knives. They broke in. Pretty much all self defense even if Cliff was high as a kite on acid. In 1969 California, I'm assuming it would've been justifiable. But yeah, it's just a movie. Tarrantino's fantasy of what should've happened, as after the Tate murder Hollywood itself changed forever (as Quentin sees it). Posted by: SpeakingOf at March 12, 2026 06:09 PM (6ydKt) 301
Ronald "Christopher Walken" Wälken is not Italian. He adopted those mannerisms in New York. His father was German and his mother was Scottish.

Ehhh. I worked enterprise IT for almost 20 years, and I've never been able to get into The IT Crowd. The jokes are all the kind of thing that people who don't know anything about the subculture think the subculture is like. It's all very "How do you do, fellow kids". The first two and a half seasons of The Big Bang Theory - before it succumbed to estrogen poisoning - had real nerds on the writing staff, and it showed. Possible good use for AI:
Redo all the scenes that had Rosanna. AI-replace her character with another image and voice. And remove her from the IMDB listing. Boom, everyone is happy. Posted by: Another Anon at March 12, 2026 06:23 PM (4h45B) 305
I don't know about y'all, but I frickin' hate that euphemism "the n-word". It's stupidly childish. I don't have a problem with folks avoiding THAT word (I hate it myself), but for Dog's sake come up with a euphemism that an adult would use rather than a 3rd grader. Is that the same Race Card that Tarantino gets to use to excuse his support BLM and Defund the Police?
Does it also excuse his lack of 'esprit de corps between artistic colleagues' toward Paul Dano, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard last year? I am missing the need to care that what he sends around has come around to him. Posted by: Sam at March 12, 2026 07:04 PM (7jMef) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0583 seconds. |
