= computer generated imagery

But! My dictionary has two computer-related expressions shortened to CGI, which seems potentially confusing:

noun
computer-generated imagery (special visual effects created using computer software): fewer real stunts are performed because filmmakers can just use CGI | [as modifier] : it's a mixture of live action and CGI animation.

abbreviation
Computing: common gateway interface (a script standard for writing interactive programs generated by visitors to web pages).

26 Belated BOING!

Dental cleaning. Painful yet effective.

Last night Mrs. BD and I went out for dinner. Haven't been at a restaurant for 2 weeks. Town was pretty empty. Chef restaurant was 1/3 full. Actually enjoyed less verbal noise.

1AM our deep sleep was interrupted by incoming. I have become the fastest dresser in the Mideast, needing to go down several flights of steps to the shelter. All intercepted and nothing to report about.

Gotta catch up on work. So.... how was your day?

27 That video reminds me of Gumby animations, especially the train with the perpetual track it would lay ahead of itself and that would disappear in its wake.

There were a few shuttle missions that involved making repairs and upgrades to satellites, most notably the Hubble telescope.

This would start to make more sense as access to orbit becomes much easier and the the design philosophy changes in response. Modular design to change out instrument packages and onboard processing elements begins to make more sense when it's an easy job so long as getting to the job site isn't a deal breaker expense. Changing out one module on multiple satellites could be done in a single mission for a significantly lower cost than de-orbiting and launching replacements embodying the entire satellite, power, station keeping, etc.

29 Is Starlink worth getting if there are alternatives?
Posted by: Dark L

Depends. I view ISPs as a commodity service and go with the one that is the most economical, has the best uptime, has no data caps, and has the fastest speed. Fastest speed can also be understood as sufficient plus a bit more to meet the household's needs. I would consider this a starting point as I'm sure there's other ways to evaluate ISPs.

If you live in a rural area, starlink is very likely your best option. If you live in an RV and are traveling around starlink is likely your best option. If you're getting fixed home internet optimize using the four criteria and you should arrive at an answer.

Except for Comcast. For them you just hate them. That's the only reason they exist.

43 The rain we're expecting is not supposed to get here until evening. I was hoping it would start drizzling this afternoon, to keep things a bit less hot.

Should be over by 3 am Thurs., the weather mavens say. I'm due to bring the Buick over to my mechanic to see if he can detect the rattle around the B-pillar, and if it's raining there's no point; the sound pretty much disappears in wet weather. Which suggests that something is expanding with moisture, just as the re-appearance of the sound in cold weather suggests something is contracting.

The noise is not bad, it's not loud, but it's noticeable on left turns and on rough pavement -- of which this pesthole has an abundance (the bad pavement, not the left turns).

Iran, TX has a population of about a thousand. Somehow it has a hospital, fitness center, two motels, some restaurants, a grocery store, an auto repair shop and some gas stations. The city's name is a tribute to the town's founders, Ira and Ann Yates.

What caught my eye is it has a liquor store and welding supply stores. So many possibilities between those two.

Always wise for digestion and blood pressure.

But unfortunately, we have also seen a degradation in Congress where it has simply become a vehicle to get wealthy, refuse to do its basic job (the budget), and invents all kinds of extraconstitutional avoidance techniques so that it does not have to do its job.

The reason we do not declare war anymore is a) a lot of legislation is triggered making the president almost a dictator (see FDR), b) Congress figured out it could avoid blame by simply passing vague authorizations like the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, c) we have the ridiculous War Powers Resolution that allows the president 60 days of action as long as the president reports to them, then an intermediate period, etc. d) the ultimate check on the administration is power of the purse (and that was the issue between Charlie I and Parliament.

68 And the judiciary comes into focus for a bit of flogging too.

Federal judges now ruling on feelings, not law. Trying to usurp the executive's power and run agencies. Ignoring their basic jobs of sentencing criminals for the safety of the public. A metacized Democrat cancer in DC district courts and DC circuit where the most hideous of Democrat crimes in office go unpunished while the courts hammer any Republican and average citizen.

The repeated and ridiculous Resist lawfare is destroying the legitimacy of the courts and the rule of law by unfounded national games with injunctions all via a single judge and many of which still Resist despite being slapped down by higher courts.

IMO the judiciary has gone off the rails and needs to be brought to heel. With prejudice. The deference given to the black robed savants is... unwarranted.

Posted by: Martini Farmer at March 11, 2026 06:57 AM (jtM2q)

72 So, the US has a decayed judiciary that ignores the rule of law, a Congress that refuses to do its basic job on budget and legislation that creates parchment internal barriers so that it cannot fulfill its role in confirmations (the idiotic blue slip policy), the sham filibuster, the noxious continuing resolutions for decades, deem as passed, and other cowardly tricks. And does not see a problem with using insider information to make themselves wealthy, taxing US citizens into poverty, and fixing their families into a life of parasitism on the US treasury.

That leaves, grimly, the cleanup task for the executive branch. Democrat presidents luxuriate by going with the flow to destruction. GWB was a passive nonce. Only Trump, in recent memory actually has been trying to do the job and the dysfunction of the other two branches and the rancid bureaucracy created by them has made him go to extraordinary lengths to try to preserve the Republic. Essentially, he is a Lincolnesque figure trying to fix decades of ignoring the problems of state (Lincoln's task was slavery and secession). Trump's is the managerial state internally and the dangers it has sown throughout the world.

=======
It is more that too many people look only at today rather than how we got here which took decades. Our legislative, past executives, and judiciary built this gilded monstrosity that cannot function anymore.

And they built it with the primary impetus, not of doing good for citizens, but for the evil purposes of making themselves feel better about themselves while they grabbed every single nickel and power advantage they could out of crises that they themselves created.

And the risk is that we continue with representative government at all with their disastrous and self seeking behavior since the Wall came down. Judges seek to claim lawmaking for themselves as petty dictators, Congress does little other than serve themselves and their donors, and that means the entire temper of the government relies on the slender reed of a President. Most of failed to answer the call. Trump hasn't.
