Definition of Jar

A jar is a rigid, cylindrical or slightly conical container with a wide mouth or opening, typically made of glass, ceramic, or plastic. It can be closed with various types of lids, such as screw caps, lug caps, cork stoppers, or tamper-evident bands

61 Lucas in original 1976 SW had accidentally written himself into a love triangle, with the hero of the series having to compete with the bad boy that young women secretly (or not so secretly) want to fuck.
Leigh Brackett in TESB rolled with that, because she was a woman and women are in their element writing a young woman who has to choose between the hero and the bad boy.
Lucas and Kasdan solved this problem by using lame plot devices.

93 “Living off the fat of the land” and “Lean times” weren’t just expressions. Fat is essential for human survival. So is protein. But protein without fat is eventually toxic, strange but true.

Lewis & Clark wrote about this in their Journals. The expedition members were nearly starving in the mountains, where game was scarce. The deer and elk they did get was very poor, and lean. Lewis wrote the men were each eating about 10 pounds of deer meat a day and they were still hungry, and getting very sick, and weak.

——-

Right, they made that too. But they were an expedition, about 30 to 40 guys burning tremendous amounts of calories. They ran out. Of everything, except ammunition. At one point they ate their moccasins.

New, unused moccasins. They would stitch up a few hundred pairs in the downtime since they wore out so fast.

Game is very lean by nature. Buffalo fat, bear’s oil, beaver tail was highly prized precisely because of the fat. It adds flavor, too. Fat is critical, protein as well (muscle maintenance & repair) There are no “essential carbohydrates” in the human diet. They couldn’t get fat.

That’s one reason hydrogenated oils became common, a “temporary” wartime expedient when fats became critical to the wars. Feeding troops & the population, plus used for making soap, and explosives.

Anna is correct. All the bullsh*t about him "having it all mapped out before the first film" is utter and provable nonsense. The whole "I am your father" wasn't even in Leigh's original draft for ESB, and was only added after she passed and the Lucas?Kasdan team took over writing duties. The hackneyed "plot twist" was just dumb, and pretty much turns Obi-Wan into a lying, manipulative dick.

You can starve to death on a protein only diet...learned that on Alone. Most important item for both sexes diet is fat. Everything else fails if you don't get that. You can live a LONG time with either no protein or no carbs, but you have to have fat (and then usually you need one of the other two - seems the women on Alone thrive with the carbs and the men with the protein, although both drop weight)...

Posted by: Oldcat at March 09, 2026 08:36 PM (8avO+)

Or dried smelt (Candlefish or Oolichan) and dried salmon.
The dried smelt was a commodity for inland trade like dried cod in Europe, and the grease was used to add to lots of dishes, and for a form of pemmican with dried berries. As a storeable fat it was perfect.
Oolichan may be source of the name "Oregon" since in the Pacific languages the R and L were interchangeable, and the 'Ch' could pass as a K or G sound.

Nearly half of U.S. small-business owners are 55 or older, yet just 54% have a succession plan in place — setting the stage for a potential retirement shock that could leave many companies vulnerable over the next decade, according to Forbes.

The stakes are high. Small businesses employ more than 62 million Americans and account for roughly 43% of U.S. GDP, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Ships Are Still Crossing the Strait of Hormuz

Tankers are reportedly switching off their AIS transponders before entering the Strait of Hormuz.
Then turning them back on after exiting.
That means the vessels are still moving oil.
But no one can track them in real time.

192 Beautiful day today. Nearly freezing night before last. Mid-80s today. Freezing cold coming up. Must be March in NE Okla.

"Legend says they’re still looking for the ball."

Funny. That ball-flinger the little kid is holding (and not using) is a great pet toy. We throw the tennis balls really far, and it's the favorite game of Daisy the jet-propelled Malinois. She runs and catches the ball and runs back and sometimes just drops it without breaking stride as we fling another one in her direction. Ultimately, she doesn't drop the ball, as she decides it's time to stop.

Always good when a critter that full of energy knows her limits. She brings the last slobbery ball inside, lies down panting heavily. Then, pretty soon, she's ready for the next thing. Even if we're not.

For me Star Wars was always a fun lightweight thing, like a modernish version of Flash Gordon. Obviously never even as serious SF as Star Trek. Weird to me that adults worry about the meaning of the plot and the motivations of the characters. "If Wiley Coyote had the money and ability to get all those items from ACME, why didnt he just have food delivered rather than continuing with the fruitless attempts to catch the Roadrunner?"

because without a goal and purpose mankind is little better than cattle. Self worth is created by goals and missions, and each bit of each struggle to each end is what defines us, and makes lives bearable against the emptiness and ennui of satiation.
By endless pursuit of the roadrunner, the coyote demonstrates his acceptance of both the impermanence of the present, and the larger struggle for meaning against the baren world; his wits in the unending duel to achieve mastery against both the moving goals, as represented by the Roadrunner, and the uncaring world, represented by the wide open barrenness and infecund mesas and hanging rocks of the American Southwest, both conspiring against his striving, and allowing him to strike his purpose from their adamantine intransigence.

Maybe new small businesses form all the time, and don't just exist from continuity of existing ones.
