A commenter pointed out on Friday that there are numerous "Ayatollahs," but only one "Supreme Leader." I had mistaken the word "Ayatollah" as meaning "Supreme Leader," which it doesn't.

I don't know if I buy these reports. I first heard speculation that he had already been injured when Iran TV described him as "an injured war veteran." People took that to mean he was injured in this war. But I think they were likely just giving him some Stolen Valor to make him sound like a tough-guy hero and not an impotent dicksucking pussy.

But I imagine he will be hit shortly.

BREAKING: In the official "allegiance ceremony to Mojtaba Khamenei", they could bring only a cardboard cutout of him.

9 Edward Luttwak sais that this is illegitimate and the regime knows it. Iran's Constitution requires the Supreme Leader to have certain clerical qualifications and the Khomeini has a grandson who is more qualified.

It's supposed to be a religious office held by distinguished scholars, not a dynasty. We'll see how this goes over with the true believers. Will the Grand Ayatollah in Iraq okay it?

All sides have reasons to lie or manipulate the information, withhold and control it. There's no internet access on the ground to get anything from people living there, and the only news source allowed is CNN who is working FOR Iran's government.

Do you trust Iran's statements? Israel's? Ours? Some European nation?

We have to just wait and see.

You can usually get a feel after a while. For example, even in Iran they tended to confirm what Trump and Israel said in 24 hours. Even the girls school strike Iran admitted they did it by accident by the next day or so.

The military giving out exact numbers of missiles fired and its quick decline certainly makes Iran's overall claims of mass destruction questionable. And if Starmer wants in that's proof that we are winning.

It is so centralized and everyone is paralyzed by inaction (will I get my ass shot when thr leader finds out?) That no one knows what to do. Even worse if communication is impaired. For one thing, Mosques are schools, worship takes place outside the mosque a certain number of times a day. Muslims don't have worship services as Christians understand it.

Second, Islam does not make a distinction between religion and politics, between the personal the the public, between government and faith. It is all one. Mosques aren't a religious place, they are a political and government place.

it is a long walk to the Urals. Even when they were winning their drives stalled badly within a month just due to getting supplies to the front and having to round up all the prisoners in the rear. Army Group North - Rapid advance through the Baltic states, stalled there essentially for the whole war. Center - stalled around Smolensk from July to September. South - slow start, stalled until Center drove South to help out in September. And so on.

Belt and Road was about trying to develop alternate land routes of trade that are not subject to Western interdiction by naval forces. Given the vast distances and high cost of traversing Central Asia it was only going to cover so much of what China needs to build a high tech economy for the billion or so people it has.

They went for the low hanging fruit. IOW they tried to get their oil cheap from countries that had sanctions slapped on them by the west and had to sell for pennies on the dollar.

Now they are paying the price for not having a back up plan and it is going to sting them badly. No more quarters with 10%+ growth for the foreseeable future. And iffn they ain't growing they are dying.

Not sure how clean it was, but since Germany wasn't a free economy it was produced without any reference to if it made sense economically or not to do so. ironically German war industry was really inefficient compared to the allies, even Russia who had borrowed some mass production ideas from the US before the war.

We never really went full wartime restrictions in economy here either. People could still buy gasoline, meat, eggs and other stuff. Granted it was being rationed but it was still available. In germany, england, italy, japan and most other countries involved in WWII gasoline, meat, eggs and medicine was almost completely unavailable.

They went for the low hanging fruit. IOW they tried to get their oil cheap from countries that had sanctions slapped on them by the west and had to sell for pennies on the dollar.

Now they are paying the price for not having a back up plan and it is going to sting them badly. No more quarters with 10%+ growth for the foreseeable future. And iffn they ain't growing they are dying.

China was not paying US Dollars for the oil from Venezuela and Iran. I can't recall the exact details of the arrangement with Venezuela, but Xi wasn't getting oil in return for US Dollars. Xi was paying Iran yuan for oil. Yuan aren't of much value outside of China. Meaning Xi had a closed-loop economic deal for Iranian oil.

In a modern war, I think it would be suicide for logistics and the vulnerability of waves of ships when the permissiveness of the air and sea environments are not likely to exist.

I thought all along with the Chinese ideal was something like Iran's. Massive missile bombardments to destroy defenses so that the landings would be simply mopping up. Now that certainty it will work is not there anymore.

Aside from what A.H. Lloyd mentions, these decisions were made by councils, after considerable discussion, debate, study, and comparison. It wasn't one guy going "eh, this one stays, that one does not."

Plus, the purpose of the councils to decide on theological issues was to see if they were Biblical not to create the Bible.

Casualty figures in those days need to be taken with a lot of salt. It would be almost impossible for an army to kill 450000 in a single day if the victims were politely lined up and asking for it. Not to mention the barbarians could not feed or move forces that size. There were certainly plenty of Gauls and border Germans under the empire to populate the West provinces even just a few decades later for the next 500 years.

Its not revisionist, Mecca was not a trading hub, was not a significant location, and was not important to anyone. It was a tiny place in the desert with a well. It was created into something else it never was by Islamic tradition.

I wish I had learned Latin, I always wanted to but it was never offered anywhere I could get training.
