Hello Horde -Haven't posted in quite a while.  You'll find me occassionally posting as Our Country is Screwed.  While I've been lurking, we have adopted a 5yr old dog whose family was relocating out of the country and couldn't take her with them.  She is originally from Bosnia and is a Lab/Terrier/Hungarian Mudi mix, at least according to the DNA test the prior owners did on her.

Her name is Ozi and after several months of adjustment, we think we've come to an understanding on whose house it really is.  After losing Fenway, our Flatcoated Retriever a couple years ago, it is great to have a canine companion again.  And, she watches TV where she'll growl whenever she sees dogs on the screen.  Watching the Westminster Dog Show was an overload for her, and so funny to watch.

Our two cats, Dini (tabby on the left) and Smudge (Maine Coon to the right) have also come to terms with Ozi and her mannerisms.   While we haven't witnessed it, we are sure there was a bitch-slap delivered to the dog, as only cats can do.

* * *

So sorry that you lost Fenway, glad that you adopted Ozi, who deserves a family.

Love Dini and Smudge. Thanks for the great photos!

Coopers Hawk and Owl.jpg

Owl cropped.JPG

Just this week, Mrs OCiS and I were looking out into our back yard when we noticed two birds of prey in a tree near our shed.  At the top is a Coopers Hawk.  If you look down the tree, you'll see a Barred Owl.  We hear the owls all the time at night, but never have we seen one this close in the wild.

Nice to see those birds so close to your home!

Some tips for discovering PetMoron Adjacent Animals from By-Tor, with a couple of cropped images (for privacy).

I got a Blink camera system on Amazon a month ago. I was skeptical for $60 for two cameras, but Ring was $200 for one, so worth a shot.
It’s pretty good! Easy setup, great picture. And with the subscription I get to review clips of all the activations. And watch live.

I get alerts that pop up on my phone that tell me what’s happening in real time. Like this one-

“dark cat is walking on driveway.”

It’s lithium battery powered so no bothering with hard wiring, but they are cheap and last six months or so. The color picture shows how clear it is, with the same pesky cat setting it off.
I recommend.

7 We have the Blink security system here too. The AI generated captions were... amusing but mostly stupid and only correct about half the time. We typically get about 20 clips of our cats on the porch or somewhere around the house. Caught a couple raccoons, possums and rabbits too.

Anyway, we spotted about 6 deer cavorting in the backyard earlier. It poured rain and there's a large puddle in the low laying area near a creek. The deer were running through the water over and over and over....

10 Hello, Horde! 😊💕

Mr. TiFW started adding water to the bird bath (which he relocated just outside of the living room window), and added a bird feeder on the archway next to it, so we see lots of birds year round now (before, they would only visit in the summer when the grapes were growing).

We have also seen an increase in traffic from neighborhood kitties, who occasionally stroll through that part of the garden from who knows where to who knows where. All we know is that our yard is the conduit. We suspect the increase in traffic is in direct correlation to the increase in bird activity, but so far no casualties have occurred - at least in our line of sight.

The increase in cat traffic has also increased the number of times that late daughter's cat, Mocha, feels the need to go outside and patrol "her" turf. Every once in a while we hear a minor dust-up, and Mocha comes inside with a bloody nose, but so far she has emerged the victor.

11 Afternoon, pet folken,

Smudge looks much like my Dagny La Siberienne: the same long grayish-brown striped fur, the small bit of white on the muzzle. Smudge seems to have more white on his shirtfront (his bib or -- there's another word for "shirtfront" we used to describe little Oreo's snowy chest fur, but now I can't think of it).

Big black Stirling was just sleeping with me. Now he's on the floor closer to the living room window. Dagny met me when I got up, hoping for some water from the bathroom tap. Don't worry, she has plenty of fresh water from her fountain, and she uses it. But like her brother, she really loves the cold fresher water from the tap.

12 Violet beagle turned 13 weeks yesterday. About the time we believe she has a routine we can follow she changes things. This is driving Mr. nec nuts. We've had her for 3 weeks and he believes she should be house broken. Ba waa-waa-waa. He doesn't remember what it was like 10 years ago when we trained Lily.

14 The big black cat has made himself unpopular this week. NO, he hasn't gotten me up by leaping over me and kicking me as he goes -- at least, not every morning. But yesterday, zooming around before breakfast, he knocked over their plastic water bowl. Since they both like their water so much I thought to leave them a bowl overnight. usually I put it on the drainboard over the sink. But I'd moved it for a moment to the counter and forgot to return it.

Zoom! Thunk! Splash!

Fortunately for me, and him, none of the water got to my tax return papers. Grumpy & Recalcitrant suggested this morning zoominess means he's bored and needs a cardboard box or something to play with and in.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 07, 2026 03:52 PM (wzUl9)

15 "Jabot"! That's the word I was looking for to describe the cats' "shirtfront"! "[A] decorative clothing-accessory consisting of lace or other fabric falling from the throat, suspended from or attached to a neckband or collar, or simply pinned at the throat."

16 We have an appointment to take the other cat that belonged to Michelle to the vet next week. She looks like she might be losing weight, and she seems under the weather. She is either 9 or 10 years old now, so I guess that's to be expected, but these two kitties are the last living link to Michelle, and I know that I am going to be an emotional wreck when they finally pass.

Mr. TiFW thinks I'm being silly, but they have worked their way into his heart, too. It will probably hit him just as hard, if not harder. I do love that man! 💕💕💕

Being the tough upright Vulcan wannabe that I am, I wouldn't admit this anywhere but here . . . but:

One reason I was hit so hard by big red tabby Arizona's passing in '99 was that Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 and I picked him out at the SPCA when he was but six weeks or so old and raised him together. For years he was the last strong link to her after our divorce and to those happy days.

In return, when I heard last year that *she* had passed away, it again brought up strong memories of him, those days, and us.

Dusty in here, man. Time to turn on a fan, I think.

Can you give Patsy her own space for a while? I had trouble with Allie at first. She'd get into spats with my other cats. Then I confined her to my library for a few months with her own food, water, and litter box. Eventually, she integrated into my house and she's now a model kitty.

31 The problem is that she wants to sleep in the bedroom with me and Jake. But Fanny is ready to rotate out of the other bedroom, so she has been spending time there. Fanny and Troubles have shared that bedroom, which has helped. I don't really have a good spot as I am trying to clear out a lot of things stored in what used to be a garage. I did get a two story wired structure that I could use, if I can figure out a place to set it up. This is a small house.

36 Stirling has also been showing a little aggression toward Dagny. Remember, he is only four years old (this week, in fact!), which means he is about twenty in human terms. If he were a young male human, he'd be driving his fixed-up Nissan 370Z with the loud glasspack muffler at twenty miles or more over the speed limit, smoking Marlboros or stronger things, and getting in scuffles at local bars over hot girls. (This, despite Stirling being altered long ago.)

He corners her from time to time, and she growls back, but I don't know if she ever cuffs him across the nose. She does not have his reach or weight advantages. I still see them grooming each other's heads and necks. Maybe it's only rough play.

41 Yet another issue with Stirling is that he likes to go behind the curtains in the living room window which bracket the window A/C unit. He's been known to pick loose the insulation strips I've packed there around the A/C box -- and besides, I don't want him to find that curtains are fun to play with. He spotted something outside just now. I distracted him by opening the door so he can stare out at whatever it is.

48 Post-surgery, MiladyJo has been sleeping in a recliner. Daisy the brilliant Malinois has been by her side a lot. A few nights ago, though, Daisy decided that, since Milady's side of the bed was vacant, she, Daisy, might as well sleep there.

We originally had Daisy trained not to get on our bed, the guest bed, or the couch, but then the kids' dogs came over, jumping on the guest bed and the couch, and Daisy's training was overpowered. Still, as a rule, the dogs stay off the main bed.

An exception was, recently, when the cooking timer a/k/a the enormously loud smoke alarm went off, and I was napping on the bed, Daughter's dog Maya jumped up and laid next to me, and the usually fierce and fearless Daisy was whining and pawing at me, so I told her to come up and lie on the other side. Was kind-of cute, how upset they were, to huddle by me.

What brands do you use? I was getting the Petco litter, $14 for 30 lbs. But the last batch, and another a while ago, failed utterly to clump as it should. The bathroom and bedroom began to smell as though someone had been using ammonia as a war gas. I've shifted back to Walmart's Special Kitty, $7.85 for 20 lbs., and it seems to work much better.

My friends outdoor cats Snowflake and Starry adapted pretty quickly to living inside my place. Of course, it was crazy cold here for several weeks. Ralphy likes Snowflake and he'd playfully chase Starry.

It warmed up and I put them out weeks ago. They still try to come in even though I no longer feed them. The dog is about 15 years old. When he goes outside Snowflake races in sometimes.

The dog has slowed down. He no longer follows me everywhere all the time. As long as he can still make it down the two stairs outside, we're good. A few months ago, the vet was impressed at the amount of life in him.

But I've noticed changes in him. Sigh...

60 What brands do you use? I was getting the Petco litter, $14 for 30 lbs. But the last batch, and another a while ago, failed utterly to clump as it should. The bathroom and bedroom began to smell as though someone had been using ammonia as a war gas. I've shifted back to Walmart's Special Kitty, $7.85 for 20 lbs., and it seems to work much better.

I use Purina Tidy Cat. It's $25 at Walmart for the "Light Weight" version, which is only 17 pounds or so, but equivalent volume to the heavier stuff. Seems to work pretty well for clumping.

Usually one container will last me about two weeks.

I've seen that and shuddered at the price, but was curious about it. Since I have only half the livestock you do, it might last us quite a while.

63 We use Feline Pine. The cats love it and makes the house smell so good with pine scent. We don't get nasty smells like we did with the litter that acts like cement when wet. We ended up using the Pine because it was safe for kittens of all ages and wouldn't get stuck on momcat while nursing newborns.

It really does work quite well. Even keeps the smell down quite a bit--mostly. Fresh squeezin's that aren't covered up tend to still reek.

65 I distracted Stirling from the window by throwing one of their fuzzy mice for him, and then using the fuzzy mouse on a stick. Now he's relaxing on the floor again.

He and Dagny like their toys. They go into the basket on their own and pull out something to play with. I find them scattered all over the living room floor.

Can you get it at Walmart too? And how extortionate is the price?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 07, 2026 05:01 PM (wzUl9)

67 Time I took the cats' latest can of Friskies out of the fridge to warm a bit, and ran some water in their bowls to clean those up. Dinnertime for them is at five p.m., and breakfast around five a.m.

Tomorrow I expect they will be happy to eat an hour earlier by their internal clocks -- their "appetite alarm," as the old TV commercial used to say.

It's not his movement that's the big problem. He sleeps a lot more. Especially at night. He no longer gets up with me.

And I have checked on him before to make sure he's breathing. Did that with Mom and Dad occasionally too. Always a weird feeling.

Our Walmart has the 20lb bag in-store for $11.38. We get the 40lb bag shipped to us, it's $22.99. You only scoop out poops while the urine turns it to sawdust. You change it out when it is mostly sawdust and you only put enough in to cover the bottom of the box.

I might try a bag this next time. If I do I'll keep some of the regular stuff in reserve, in case the feline thugs hate the Pine for some reason.

I hope you all like it :-) Even our cats who grew up using the cement stuff, immediately enjoyed the pine.

72 Joyenz, I see on their site Feline Pine has clumping and non-clumping varieties. Which do you use?

And they advise to put the new stuff down in the clean box, then put a layer of the fresh clay litter on top. Don't mix them, they say, the cat will do that naturally. Then the next time you clean up the box, you can go all Feline Pine.

Non-clumping and we use feline pine only. No clay litter because it wasn't kitten safe.

Looks good. One of the reviews says to use a different scooper; is that necessary, and if so, what kind?

We used normal scooper since you just scoop out poops until you just dump the whole box to put fresh in. The urine doesn't clump. The pine absorbs and turns to sawdust. This litter is also lighter and easier when it comes to doing a full dump of the box.

Okay, then, I think I'll try it. The effort involved in rinsing out the box and carrying the dirty water in a bucket through the living room to dump it on the lawn is the worst part of the whole process. If I can skip that and make them happy too, good.

We just dumped into a rubbish bag when doing full dump. Used old shopping bags when just scooping poops. You want a scoop with holes big enough to let the pine pellets fall back in box, but still keep the poop.

My sister used to have to do all the boxes herself because the clay stuff was too heavy for my disabled butt. Now I can help because the pine is lighter and does not concrete itself to the box.

82 The Epstein case just took a very dark turn
I always thought it was a suicide I now no longer believe that.
One of the 2 correctional officers on duty in special housing felidited over 11000 dollars in cash. Including 1 of 5000 that triggered an alert shortly before his death in 2029. She also purchased a 2019 Land Rover
And his body was found st 542 am she googled Jeffery Epstein twice on the 40 mins before his body was found
