Really, the big part of 2018 wasn't that the retirements happened but that Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell spent 2 years telling Republicans that their standard bearer could possibly be a Russian agent. All kinds of incentive to simply not turn out on the Republican side while feeding the natural inclination of the out of party voters to turnout during a midterm.

That wall to wall messaging that the GOP president could be a foreign agent of a hostile power did more than the retirements.

Notice that the polling now is far more even than at a similar period in March of 2018, and there were more announced retirements at that point 6 years ago than today.

Iowa is slightly concerning to me. Our Governor and Sen. Ernst are not running for reelection, probably because they are very unpopular. While Iowa has been very Red recently combine unpopular incumbents, mid-term trends and a Democrat candidate that has a history of winning state-wide elections, and we could be unpleasantly surprised.

Senate has its own dynamics and a more rigid red state/blue state dichotomy that makes it harder for a blue candidate to win in a red state and vice versa. Dems, have Ossoff in GA as their most threatened seat but the retiring Tina Smith seat in MN due to issues these might become something or not.

I think Cooper is the underdog in NC because of the voter registration trends over the last few years which have not reversed. As long as Whatley doesn't have some sort of major controversy, I think he wins by 1-3.

I'm hoping that Ossoff is a hilarious unexpected flip.

The MI seat, though, is the wildcard. There's a radical Muslim who's leading the Democrat primary. If he wins, it could end up a 50/50 race.

The answer lies in having to reconstruct districts as to normal vote including the effects of redistricting just recently. We should have some measures perhaps by May of the economic factors but the war factor, the vote fraud investigations, the DHS/TSA shutdown and possible terrorist attacks, plus random stray voltage may affect results.

I used to keep up with House races from 1990's to 2010 or so but then moved into a different area of study due to realigning research to the classes I taught.

Probably, it was rather protected. My friend was a floor refinish guy. I had him come in and sand them. They were beautiful. I can't believe somebody carpeted over that floor. This was the late 80's, not the 70's. A little behind the times they were.

I just think that one of the core problems with the Republican Party is that they intentionally sabotage themselves, and that they're not doing it at nearly the scale now to materially affect things.

"Oh, no, the Senate is dragging its feet on the SAVE Act" is materially different from "Congressional GOP leaders say that Trump is Russian puppet" to the electorate.

Does that mean that the GOP keeps the House? Nope. I still think a modest loss is in the cards.

It's just...this ain't 2018 when the GOP lost 40 House seats (and gained 2 Senate seats).

And yes, the 2020 redraw has a lot to do with that.

That is kind of crazy! They carpeted over wood a lot inthe50s and 60s because having wall to wall carpet was a sign of being wealthy. My grandmother did this to her house, and then put those plastic runners everywhere. Her carpet looked brand new decades later. So did the wood. Crazy, as I said!

Last summer, I was about to get my cake pops removed. The plan until recently was to convert my marshmallow wand into a marshmallow tunnel. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, I noticed some hair regrowth on my marshmallow wand. 195 187. Everyone I knew in the 60s carpeted over wood floors because wood floors at the time required waxing and polishing periodically. Urethane coatings, etc. were not a thing then, and maintenance of wood floors was a several day event, a couple of times a year.

The day came when they needed refinished, and carpet was to save the day. And yes, wall to wall carpet was considered a luxury.

Too many variables that could affect things right now especially Iran. Late May, early June after primaries will be clearer.

But there is not the huge wave in 2026 polling like 2018 and in similar situations, Democrat overreach could end up like the GOP did by losing seats in 1998. Trump is a known factor more or less now and the risk for Dems is taking the 20 percent position where 80 percent are on the other side. Trump is genius at making the TDS infected Dems do just that. Example, his SOTU this year.

In part, I think the whole SAVE act is a troll (needed but a troll) where the Democrats in a talking filibuster would nail their standard to the mast to oppose something that even a majority of their party favors.

Same with embracing the illegal criminals like Khalil and the MS-13 Maryland Dad prominently.

Yeah, carpet in the bathroom seemed to be an odd thing. My Mammaw/Pappaw had thin cloth carpet in the bathrooms. Seemed easy enough. Less likely to slip.

Grandma and Grandpa had shag. And wood paneling. If they had not been in el paso, that would not have worked out as well as it did. You open the door after a shower, all the humidity goes bye bye.

Cooks uses normal vote for the district based on past voting, plus fundraising, candidate past experience, etc. I used Cook's in a study looking at candidates in primary elections and had a discussion with their ratings person over what they used.

FWIW, two measures of candidate experience exist, Krasno Greene (complicated and ordinal) or the older Jacobson measure (whether they had held elected office or not). Haven't followed that research though in about 15 years as I pivoted to predominately legal and policy research.

As I've gotten older, I realize I have a very real and strong tendency to idealize the past. I find it very hard to remember anything bad.... everything seemed great when I was young, no problems etc.... Of course, that was not true but I tend to be an optimist so I guess focusing on the positives without even thinking about it is natural....

If'n you cleaned regularly, probably no more than anything else. Grandma and Grandpa were both neat freaks. Everything in it's place, cleaned and put away right. Grandma was queen OCD. Grandpa was old Army. He was still getting up and exercising at 5am even 20 years after he retired.

It's difficult to get people to realize that every latest Trump Panic is bs. For example who remembers the last Iran war? Not quite a year ago. That was the end of Trump. And no one remembers. And that's the point. It's always the next thing.
