Open Thread: It Took Three Years and Ton of Money, But Fireball Tools Turned Their Offices Into a Sci-Fi Starship Interior Out of Star Wars and Star Trek

So I'm putting up an open thread because it's been a busy week and I want to chillax.

I watched this over the weekend. It's pretty great. If you can't watch it today, come back to this post over the weekend and check it out.

There are nine parts and they're all worth the watch. Here's quick ten-minute recap of the whole project.

I don't know if I'd recommend that, though. If the subject interests you, I'd recommend just watching all nine parts so as not to spoil the final form of the remodel.

One thing he keeps pointing out is that TV and movies can build these props on the cheap because they're only props and only have to survive a couple of uses before the shoot is over. On the other hand, he has to build this stuff to be functional and long-lasting. I mean, the "Star Map" isn't actually functional, but all the stairs, doors, guardrails, and office furnishings are.

Here's Part One. In this video from three years ago, they build out the exterior of their offices, overlooking the fabrication floor. The offices look like the conning tower of a high tech aircraft carrier.

In Part Two, he builds heavy "blast doors" like you see in Star Wars. This is actually the first part I watched because, if you know me, you know I'm all about heavy blast doors. Of course they open and shut automatically. He doesn't include a "shissh-shissh" sound effect because he realizes that would drive everyone in the office crazy after five minutes.

Part Three is short and skippable. In this, they put on false "armored blast shutters" over the windows from Part One. It's neat but in the end, it's just about cutting plywood to look like metal armor shutters. It's not going to blow your mind. You can skip to the end to just see what they look like, installed.

Part Four is also skippable. In this, they build a giant "sensor screen" for the office. It's neat but like the last one, it's mostly what you'd think it would be. Putting four 65 inch TV screens on the ceiling and making them look like one big portal. Again, maybe skip to the end.

Part Five is interesting -- stairs up to the office. Yes stairs are boring but science fiction Death Star stairs are interesting. They plot a design which will make them look futuristic. The owner points out that in Star Wars, stairs never have railings, but unfortunately the Fascist Building Code requires them. But he'll try to make them look "spacey."

In Part Six, he builds an "infinite reflection" "Portal" as a visual feature for the stairs. Kind of neat, but also, I think, skippable unless you're going to watch all of them. Go to the end to see what it looks like.

Part Seven is interesting. He doesn't want people to walk under the landing on the stairs, because tall people might bang their head. He doesn't want to just close off the stairs that he worked so hard to look spacey. He steals a trick from Disneyland's imagineers and decides he'll build a prop under the landing that will keep people from walking under it while looking like a piece of sci-fi tech. The tech he builds is one of those glowing glass "star maps" you see in Star Wars and other sci-fi media. It's pretty neat.

In Part Eight, he actually finishes the interior of the "starship command offices." Pretty neat.

And in Part Nine, he finishes the project by building a spacey guard-rail on the mezzanine overlooking the fabrication floor. In a perfect Sci-Fi World, there would be no guardrail at all, but once again Imperial Building Codes require one. This is also skippable.

I like all the parts but I'm leading you to the best ones if you only have time to watch some of them.

Makes me really want to buy a two million dollar wetsaw. I can really get a lot done with a two million dollar wetsaw.

Babylon 5 was like that. They had a very limited budget, so they had to make their sets durable to last several seasons. Like Star Trek, they redressed the sets as needed to resemble various parts of the space station.

Living quarters, for example, were basically the same set but tailored to the occupants.

And each year of the show the bridge set got improved. In some early episodes you can hear the floor complaining a bit when people walked around the set. That went away as the show progressed.

64 I only wish budgeting remained high for the Star Trek series. It was a little too cheaped out in some episodes. A good story, good writing will overcome this, but still. The opening scenes of the pilot - “Check the circuits!” and the on board scenes, the down planet scenes were great. Of course they spliced it into “The Menagerie”.

I totally believe that sanctions against Iran have been circumvented covertly by unofficial means to benefit individuals (and the EU in general).

Now they have a problem. Do they suck up to the US as a way to keep this knowledge from ever seeing the light of day. Or do they try to pressure the US to tone it down hoping such documentation is never allowed to be found and made public. Their actions have been inconsistent and reactionary to real time events. Perhaps this is why.

The GH backstory and format could have been made more believable. Say Britt Reid had been in the Army, perhaps as a Ranger (heh!), and he saved the life of a young Asian teen. They swear to work together to destroy evil, and the boy becomes Kato. Then, instead of Britt depending on his secretary to keep his secret in the office, it could be his sister; she and Britt are the last members of the wealthy Reid family who established the newspaper. The public fiction would be that Britt was a do-nothing, drunken playboy, and that she was the real boss. She is -- but of the family corporation; Britt is the Green Hornet. Only his sister and the DA know his real identity.

They didn't want to build a ship model so they sent the entire moon with them. They had cargo shuttle craft (Eagles) that were pretty cool so they could fly to the alien planet they were zooming by for the episode, I don't recall them engaging in combat or that they were all women.

176 I need to modify my opinion of For All Mankind that I shared last week.

While Seasons 1 - 3 are still a woke parade, Season 4 absolutely surprised me.

They kept the woke to a minimum and actually created a plot-line that was both interesting and entertaining for the entire season. It was part spy-thriller, part heist movie, part The Expanse. It still has some stupid parts along the way, but all in all a great piece of work this time out.

I'm actually looking forward to Season 5 which starts on March 27th.

In Trek despite the "5 year mission" they do get back to Federation space pretty often to starbases for court marshals and to ferry diplomats about for shows. At these places new engineering/securty (red shirts) and other crew can be cycled in and out. I seem to remember one where a pretty blue skirt showed up Kirk had done something unmentioned at a previous party that he had not seen in a while.

Yes, the Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Ensign Nobody 1 and 2 away team was a noticeable feature. A friend of mine wrote a parody star trek computer game where you had the option to not do that and send a nobody away team with a huge penalty in success rate.

What changed my life -- as I was extremely good in math and aspired to be an engineer & problem-solver was:

I aced algebra, geometry, trigonometry, etc. and took pre-calculus my junior year in HS -- and registered for the calculus class prior to my senior year, but my high school canceled the class as only two of us ultimately were qualified (had the necessary prerequisites) and signed up for it.

I went to my favorite math teacher to complain, and he told me that he was going to be teaching the first computer science course ever that year at the school (197

-- and that I should take it.

Absolutely loved it -- and had a 25-year workaholic career in it ...

Exactly. Like you I was good in math. One other factor I couldn't ignore was the money. There weren't many engineer types where I lived. When I told friends and family what my commencing salary (20K/year) would be they couldn't believe it.

Curtis LeMay led from the front. Maybe the last general to do that.

He had some controversial ideas on the best way to make a bombing run with B-17s.

He reasoned, if we don’t hit the target, we’ll just have to keep going back, again and again. Doctrine said zig- zag, which made accurate bombing almost impossible.

LeMay proposed direct straight line flights to the target. In the mission briefings they (pilots and crews) gave him a lot of shit. “You’ll get us all killed”.

“I’ll be in the first plane myself” calmed them down, a little. His plan worked. They still got shot all to hell, but they did start hitting the target, at least.

I love the fact that both Washington and Grant (whom most consider the first and second "indispensable men" in American history, with Trump being the third) were both considered the greatest horsemen of their generation.

The story of Grant (as the Quartermaster during the Battle of Monterrey) avoiding sniper fire by hiding behind the side of his galloping horse in the Mexican-American War is a great one.

Lincoln, while visiting McClellan on the Virginia Peninsula, noticed that as the Rebs were pulling out nobody was bothering to recapture Norfolk and the Navy Yard there so he and his party (with I think a cabinet member) commandeered some small craft from the navy and some troops about the area and sailed over and reoccupied the Yard.
