THE MORNING RANT: Some Other Election News Out of Texas; plus, A Great Summary from Real Clear Investigations of the EV Debacle’s Cost

One riot, one ranger.png

Paxton’s Chances in the Texas Republican Senate Runoff

There has been a lot of talk about the two Senate primaries in Texas earlier this week, in which James Talarico beat Jasmine Crockett in the Democrat primary, while Ken Paxton forced John Cornyn into a runoff in the Republican primary. I’ve heard about all of the horse-trading going on behind the scenes, as President Trump aims to get one of the Republicans to withdraw. If neither withdraws, I am very hopeful that Paxton wins the runoff.

There has also been much hand-wringing among Republicans and euphoria among Democrats because there were more Democrat votes cast than Republican votes in Texas. While I am frustrated that so many Republican voters skipped the primary, voter turnout in March is almost unrelated to turnout in November’s general election.

In the senate primaries this week, there were 2.07 million Republican ballots cast and 2.22 million Democrat ballots cast. By contrast, four years ago in the mid-term Texas gubernatorial election there were 1.95 million Republican primary ballots and just 1.07 million Democrat primary ballots. But in the November 2022 general election, Greg Abbot received 4.4 million votes and “Beto” O’Rourke received 3.5 million votes. Again, primary turnout is not reflective of the general election.

Beyond that, Texas is infested with so many RINOs because there have been so few contested Democrat primaries in recent decades. Therefore, Democrats often crossed over to the Republican primary to elect left wing, false-flag “Republicans” such as John Cornyn.

Here’s the good news – because there were so many Democrats voting in their own primary this year, John Cornyn cannot count on them bailing him out in the Republican runoff. Anyone who voted in the Democrat primary is now ineligible to vote in the Republican runoff.

Conservatives Sweep Texas State Board of Education Primaries

Elections involving school boards aren’t very sexy, but they are probably more important in the current culture war than the more prominent governor and senate races.

Ryan James Girdusky’s 1776 Project has done an outstanding job pouring resources and training into local school board races and state board of education races. It supported four hard-core conservative candidates in Republican primaries against RINOs and other establishment candidates. All four conservatives won, and if they win their general election races against their Democrat opponents in November, Texas will finally have conservatives in charge of state textbooks and curriculum. Because of Texas’ size and impact, this also affects other states that follow Texas’ lead.

What were these candidates running on? These were the common issues in their campaigns:

• Combatting the woke agenda and leftist indoctrination in schools.

• Defending parental rights in education decisions.

• Promoting conservative values in schools, specifically faith, family, patriotism, liberty, and moral character.

• Supporting high academic standards and expectation.

Much gratitude to Mr. Girdusky and the 1776 Project.

“One Riot, One Ranger” Statue Stands Proud Again

In the great national convulsion following the death of George Floyd in 2020, there was widespread toppling of patriotic statues across the land. One of those toppled statues was the “One Riot, One Ranger” statue at Dallas Love Field airport. The statue was in tribute to the legendary Texas law enforcement agency, The Texas Rangers.

There is some good news from the least-woke team* in Major League Baseball - the Texas Rangers baseball team has just prominently installed that same Ranger statue at their ballpark (Globe Life Field) in Arlington, TX. (* “Texas Rangers Frustrate LGBTQ Advocates As Only MLB Team Without a Pride Night

“Statue removed from Dallas Love Field installed at Texas Rangers’ ballpark; The statue of a Texas Rangers law enforcement figure disappeared under a shroud of controversy nearly six years ago” [Dallas Morning News – 3/02/2026]

On Monday morning, the club accepted and installed the 12-foot bronze One Riot, One Ranger statue depicting a member of the Texas Rangers law enforcement agency that had previously stood at Dallas Love Field until it was removed during the racially-charged summer of 2020.

Below is a picture of the despicable desecration in 2020. The header picture at the top of this post is the ranger at his new home.

Ranger statue removal.png

In case you’ve never heard the “one riot, one ranger” story (which is probably apocryphal): In the late 19th century, lawlessness had broken out in a Texas town, so the mayor telegraphed the governor seeking help from the Texas Rangers. When the train arrived, just one Ranger got off the train. The incredulous mayor asked if there was only one Ranger dispatched, to which the Ranger replied that his understanding was that there was only one riot.

Real Clear Investigations’ Summary of the Costly EV Debacle

James Varney at Real Clear Investigations is a friend of the blog and a heck of a writer. He has written an outstanding piece summarizing the obscene waste of taxpayer money involved in the failed “EV transition.” I’ve extracted some of it, but there is much more, and I encourage you to go read the entire piece.

“Bad Bets: Massive EV Subsidies Not Paying Off” [Real Clear Investigations – 02/26/2026]

The future was supposed to have arrived this year in a cluster of counties just east of Atlanta in the form of a state-of-the-art factory that would churn out 400,000 electric vehicles a year. But when JoEllen Artz looks about her lifetime neighborhood, all she sees are holes.

“Those shovel holes they made in the ground? That’s it,” she said of the planned site of a Rivian manufacturing plant. “It’s awful, awful.”

The problem is not a lack of funds. On the promise of thousands of jobs, elected officials in Washington, D.C., and Atlanta have pledged some $8 billion to the project, including a $6.5 billion loan the Biden administration green-lit in its final hours.

Those loans are just two of the huge public bets, or investments, that state capitals and Washington, D.C., have made on EVs. While no one has calculated exactly how many federal and state dollars both Republican and Democratic elected officials have sent to that green sector, experts RealClearInvestigations consulted fixed the total north of $100 billion.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Public spending on green energy projects, including EVs, began in earnest in May 2009 when President Obama, flanked in the Rose Garden by Detroit and United Auto Workers executives, unveiled his National Fuel Efficiency Policy. It was, the crowd insisted, “good for consumers, good for the economy, and good for the country.”

There has been bipartisan support for many EV initiatives, and the sector got a huge boost during the Biden administration when funding linked to a NetZero future spread throughout the federal government. The bill goes well beyond the billions of dollars in tax credits the federal government provided to EV buyers until that program was ended last September, and includes school buses, postal delivery vehicles, charging stations, and the big manufacturing loans.

The Energy Department, for example, has spent more than $30 billion. That chunk comes from the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing division. Prior to 2019, the ATVM, as it is known, had issued around $8 billion in loans to five different companies. Of those, Nissan repaid its $1.4 billion loan, while Tesla repaid its $465 million loan years ahead of schedule. A $5 billion loan to Ford remains active, but taxpayers lost nearly $210 million on loans to Fisker Automotive and Vehicle Production Group, both of which defaulted, according to the department.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Some states have labored to force EVs into the market. More than a dozen of them have followed California’s lead, requiring at least 35% of cars offered for sale there annually be “ZEVs,” or “zero emission vehicles,” with all cars being ZEVs by 2035. This complicated, opaque system has made all cars more expensive, according to economists. Congress voted last year to kill California’s plan, but President Trump has not acted on that, and state officials have vowed to sue if he signs it.

On top of the costs of those market manipulations, which can be difficult to compute, are billions in direct state spending on EVs and EV-related projects. Both Republican and Democratic elected officials supporting these moves have done so on the grounds that it would provide an economic boost and be good for the environment.

Rivian, whose corporate communications did not respond to RCI’s request for comment, hasn’t only benefited from the Biden administration’s last-minute loan. In 2022, the state’s Republican leadership in Atlanta pledged up to another $1.5 billion – one of the largest incentive packages in Georgia history – including tax incentives, abatements, support programs, and more than $175 million for land acquisition and improvements. There has been an estimated $25 million in local incentives provided, too.

We tested the relationship in this chart (Texas primary / Texas general elections 2000–2024) and it’s basically noise:
• correlation r ≈ 0.13 (R² ≈ 0.02)
• a 10-point swing in the primary maps to ~0.4 points in the general

-------

Essentially, there is no relation between primary turnout and general election turnout in Texas (and in general). If there were, Obama would have won the 2008 general election.

The problem is Texas run offs generate no more than 50% of the Texas primary voters.

Since women outvote men when it comes to showing up for elections, this means the electorate will be far more female and far more "consistent always voter" in May...and that does not bode well for Paxton.

22 MMW: James Talarico will win the 2026 Texas senate races and will capture the 2028 Democratic nomination for President

He’s the kind of candidate Democrats have been waiting for: young, articulate, values-driven, and unapologetically bold without being alienating. In a state that’s been trending competitive for years, a disciplined campaign focused on working families, public education, and fundamental rights can flip Texas statewide.

Trump will weaponize mashed potatoes if Talarico gains any more traction. He might be squeaky clean, but that no defense against a nuclear lying machine.

Trump changed everything. Fight gorilla politics with gorilla politics. Get a following, build it, and then use it as much as damn possible to get as much power as possible.

If Talarico is willing to call for accountability if he gets to Washington, then he has my support. I haven't heard that from him, unlike Crockett, she is very outspoken about the corruption and calls it out boldly all the time. That's the energy we need right now.

A black woman will not beat a white man for senate in Texas. I'm sorry, but it's just reality.

The EU-types are insisting that this was a perfectly normal bank transfer from Vienna to Kyiv and that the bank employees have been "kidnapped", while the Hungarians think that something nefarious was afoot.

Making it even stranger is that transporting the money via Poland would have been faster than via Hungary, so why was the money even in Hungary in the first place?

So, I just call elections like I see it. Paxton needed to have a winning margin to have a chance in May. Instead, he had a losing margin and nowhere to really now gain (b/c Dems can't cross over to put him in as a spoiler, anymore than they can cross over the go for their more desired RINO)...so, this rides and falls on which Rs show up for elections - and women outshow men, especially on special elections - that's just fact. And Cornyn does better with R women than Paxton does. Paxton has little chance without something big changing this election between now and May...and I don't see it.

That's actually a big advantage for us supplying arms to Israel...we get great battlefield testing of advanced equipment, and can adjust and improve from it. We're giving the Ukes older stuff that's on its way out of service, but Israel is a different story.

And yes, Venezuela and now Iran are showing the glaring deficiencies in Communist equipment when up against the unrestricted might of the US. These absolutely one-sided beatdowns may do more to prevent a Chinese attack on Taiwan than anything else in the last 20 years.

i]Regarding the current disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Schweizer said, “we now have a chokehold on the Strait.” He said:

Assume that China wanted to move on Taiwan, right? There’s a military response. But now we have a massive energy response which is we simply don’t allow any tankers to ship oil from the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. We can do it. It might have been a little bit dicey if we had not taken out the Iranians. That’s roughly half of their oil — 40 to 50% of their oil — is suddenly not available to them.

130 The Assembly of Experts, Iran's top mullahs, apparently doesn't want Khamenei's son, Motjava, to succeed him as the big falafel, despite the fact that the IRGC leadership says they want him in that slot. This seems odd at first glance, but apparently he (Motjava) is not a serious Islamic scholar. Rather, he is more of a political animal, and thus would provide a way for IRGC leadership to accrue more power at the expense of the mullahs. There is a power struggle aborning, which I think could easily turn into a civil war. I hope they both lose.

This all assumes Motjava is still above the dirt, which is not clear.

That's the part that does not make sense to me. If they mean to muscle their way into Taiwan, they need to means test their shit and tactics.

Maybe this will prompt them to go for some sort of more subterfuge.
Posted by: Aetius451AD

China's offense against Taiwan was predicated on the same tactics used by the Iranians. Barrage of missiles taking out US bases like Guam and its ships. Same threat to Japan.

And these magical hypersonic missiles got built up into the unstoppable weapon by much of the popular press.

Now those fundamental assertions that China can rely on that strategy for uncontested landings in Taiwan can be seriously questioned as to validity.

147 Trying to stop crime is racist. Obviously, just look at the breakdown of crime.
———

The Bolshies were hitting this hard decades ago. They put forth this notion in high schools, that incarceration rates must mirror the precise racial demographics or, the only possible reason for the disparity is racial discrimination. No other reason.

It didn’t work in our generation. Everyone in class just looked at each other and laughed. WTF is she on about? Black criminality is legendary.

Maybe there could be a discussion as to why that is, but nobody can argue that locking up hard core criminals is a bad thing. Except perhaps hard core criminals. And Democrats.

If the argument is that the criminal justice system is inherently “racist” or “white supremacy” then there isn’t any discussion possible with Democrats, and “minorities” are not capable of integrating into society or forming functional communities. I’m not at all certain the “intellectuals” fully grasp what they are advocating for.

152 I did some checking.
Gospel of Thomas likely did not exist when Justin Martyr was citing Jesus' sayings, which somewhat-famously come from a harmony, a harmony with very little overlap with Thomas.
You start seeing Thomas in Church fathers when they... condemn it.
Even the Gospel of Peter fares better (Ignatius and "2 Clement" use some wild Peter lore which might come from that, maybe Justin uses it too, and then there's the famous tradition about Serapion).
Clement of Alexandria is an exception; he doesn't rank Thomas with the big four, but he does sometimes bring apostolic traditions which include Thomas' sayings.

There's a psychological element to this whole thing, and Republicans are just...boring when they just accept leftist framing of things.

218 Eh, considering horses were the primary mode of transportation for thousands of years, cars and trucks replaced them with astonishing speed.

25 years maybe? Largely. In human history, that’s a revolution overnight.

What’s really strange is the almost cult-like belief system by the True Believers. I’m not wedded to oil and gas, it’s merely the fact there is no viable replacement on the horizon.

The first oil shocks, the Arab Embargo, put a lot of research and development into alternatives, building upon lots of research done during World War II.

One of the first things FDR did to piss off Imperial Japan was ending sales of aviation gasoline. They responded by developing planes that could run on lower octane fuel. Then they cutoff oil and gas altogether. It’s likely the fleet and aircraft that attacked Pearl Harbor was fueled by US oil and gas.

This is actually very much what Trump did with his 2nd term cabinet and lieutenant picks. First term, he trusted the Party to help supply him with "experts". He got a bunch of backstabbing RINOs trying to moderate his agenda, or subvert it completely to GOPe goals.

This time, he primarily picked people that know and hate what the institutions they were picked to run have become. Tulsi at intel, RFK at health, etc. Trump wants to dismantle, shrink and refocus the Federal government, and he has people personally driven to do the same with their departments.

239 Amusing story on Anthropic's fall from grace on X

@USWREMichael
says the Maduro raid was the trigger point for the DoW’s conflict with Anthropic:

“Palantir’s the prime contractor. [Anthropic] is the sub.”

“One of [Anthropic’s] execs called Palantir and asked, ‘Was our software used in that raid?’”

“So— they’re trying to get classified information. And implying— if they were used in that raid, that it might violate their terms of service.”

“It raised enough alarm with Palantir, who has a trusted relationship with the Department, to tell me, and I’m like, ‘Holy shit— what if this software went down? Some guardrail kicked up? Some refusal happened for the next fight like this one and we left our people at risk?”

“I went to
@SecWar

@PeteHegseth
and told him what happened.”

“That was like a ‘Woah’ moment for the whole leadership at the Pentagon that we’re potentially so dependent on a software provider without another alternative that has the right or ability to not only shut it off— maybe it’s a rogue developer who could poison the model to make it not do what you want, or trick you, or hallucinate purposefully.”

It would be very interesting to look at the total energy budget to make ethanol, from the time the seeded passes over the field, until the ethanol comes off the still, and compare that to other crop-based fuels, like say growing canola to make oil that can be burned in diesel engines. And then compare both to the costs of producing petroleum fuels for the same purpose.

Polling now is largely worthless. The best pollsters I look at with a side eye.

It's a twofold issue of incentives (no one is scored on how accurate their polls months out are) and response bias (progressives have long shown a higher propensity for actually answering pollsters, inflating their numbers, a pattern that gets much, much worse outside of election seasons).

But, the tweet was a look into the past about how primary turnout and general election turnout relate. No matter the year, there was no predictive value. It's statistical noise.

268 GaaAHH! My husband does this constantly! I have to turn off his closet light at least once a day. And then he bemoans our electric bill. FFS, turn off the lights!

When I was growing up, there was usually one light bulb in a given room. Now everyone has track lights. My kitchen has eight of them (granted, they're LEDs), as well as 3 pendant lights, and several over the stove and kitchen table. I sometimes come into the kitchen, and every one of them is on. Grrrrr.

Betting markets have no specialized knowledge, are really small markets, and actually don't have a very good track record.

Up until 7 pm election night 2024, they had Democrats winning the House. For months. And then...flip.

276 FWIW, Rasmussen today has Trump at about 48 percent approval. If the war ends with few US casualties in a few weeks, then that is more likely to go up than down.

Rasmussen was very accurate for 2024, but more importantly is the trends. We can't know how accurate the specific numbers are, but a trend showing an increase in popularity is a but more meaningful. Whether it's a SOTU bump, positive war rallying, or improved perception of the economy is the question.

Helmut Northpol had a more concise model that predicted Trump's win in 2016 in March of that year.

I took a look at the website, Universe: Registered voters
Sample Size: 1,000
Method: Online Panel
Field Dates: Nov 11 - Nov 12, 2025
Margin of Error: ±3.3%

Online panels have not shown themselves to be particularly valid yet. No evidence of geographic weighting either. And they show Trump's approval at about 45 percent. Youngest 18-29 years olds are showing the highest disapproval as well which are actually the ones least likely to vote.

287 > Your point was that primary turnout predicts general election turnout

That’s a false assertion and you know it.

What I pondered is whether at some point, after numerous like results and a statistical increase in Democrat turnout- if it matters. Or at least, at what point does it?

Trump broke all types of records and statistics. Is your assertion that primary voting numbers don’t matter, and nothing in those statistics is in any way predictive of the November election?

I suppose one could state that, largely the can’t be correlated, but when, and under what conditions does that correlation break down?

It would be foolish, sophistic and a statistical impossibility that your theorem would apply 100% of the time. Ergo, I posit, under what conditions does that change.

And you throw the fallacy flag. lol.

292 Snark isn’t a substitute for logic.

But then, it seems you’re out of your depth.

It’s ok. Not everyone can follow logic.

You seem to be holding to the assertion that nothing in the midterm statistics is analogous to the November elections. Not any deviation. Not any particular measurement. Which is a statistical impossibility.

If you were to say, it’s largely not analogous but here is a category and deviation that is meaningful, we could have an honest discussion.

But you’re going to schmolls with questionable internals and ad hominem.

Got it, Prometheus.
