In the early 20th century or thereabouts there was a big push to put an observatory on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. It isn’t a particularly good location at all for this purpose, but somebody wanted one there very badly.
A lot of interesting history of that area, there was a lot of opposition to turning it into a national park. Private landholders, among them Randolph Hearst of newspaper fame, owned getaway cabins and such. Posted by: Common Tater at March 06, 2026 07:29 PM (SpYDH) 12

When we lived in Monterey, CA the Thunderbird and Blue Angles would swap air shows.
My wife worked for the Naval Postgrad School. So, when the Angles were in town they'd do fly overs, really low over her building. When the Thunderbirds were in town, they'd spank the shit out of the entire campus. Then, there was the Army. Doing rooftop repelling. With nobody noticing. Yea.. they were that good. They would take off, and right above my tiny house they would rotate and hit the afterburners. The whole house would shake and vibrate. I think it hit some structural resonance freq of the house. Despite being known as flightless birds, penguins can actually fly, just not very well. They do fly better than ostriches, but not as well as puffins, or even wild turkeys.
Because of this ornithological handicap, penguins have historically been confined to the nether regions of the planet. After the Nazi-penguin collaboration from the 30s up until the early 60s, and the subsequent rise of Big Penguin, the mephitic menace has spread across the southern hemisphere, with it's beady little eye on the remainder of the so far untainted northern portion of Earth. Also, Wifey and I drove out to March AFB back before we escaped Califzuela -- maybe 20 years ago -- to attend an Air Show.
We arrived late and had to park quite a distance away. As we were walking into the airfield, some military aircraft was diving straight down from several thousand feet right above us -- and then went horizontal just above the main parking lot. The vibration was so violent during that maneuver that all of the car alarms went off at the same time ... it was hilarious. Most airshow aircraft are high fuel, low stores, and aft cg. Not that you would need stores for a show flight. But high fuel is generally mitigative for critical wing bending shear torsion. And aft CG helps performance. With minimal stores it's hard to get a good ballast for aft cg but there's generally a way to get enough.
Some of the maneuvers look crazy but the aircraft is actually way way within it's structural design envelope at low Q and mach. Posted by: banana Dream at March 06, 2026 08:02 PM (3uBP9) 82

During Trumps first term when he had some celebration he had jets doing flybys all over the place. I was at a car show and directly overhead a B-2 flanked by 2 fighters flew by. They were real low, and flying low speed. One fighter was an F-22, not sure about the other since I was fixated on the B-2. That was wicked. The crowd went ape shit.

Growing up sonic booms by Navy jets were not uncommon (shook the sliding glass doors real good). NAS Miramar not far away. Different universe back then, of course, sonic booms long since prohibited over populated coastal zone. Good 6th grade friend's father was a squadron skipper (VF-213). The most humiliated I've ever been was when I was driving a girl home from a date and I couldn't get up her street in ice. I tried like 3 times and would slide back. I thought the date was great until then. I was walking up with her she said bye. I said I would carry her she said forced a smile and said no thanks and walked the rest of the way while I stood there like a dork.

If a position was strongly held, it could be bypassed. This bothered me when I first saw it, but after digging into the Spanish Civil War (don't forget to buy your copy of Long Live Death today!) I realized that they were going off of the Ebro campaign, which was a bloody, back-breaking attritional slog. Spain's Verdun. Lots of criticism for Franco in choosing to push back the Republican salient vs making an attack elsewhere, but it does parallel Grant's siege of Petersburg, pinning down forces that could not be moved elsewhere. When the Ebro front was restored, Franco's subsequent offensive into Catalonia completely shattered Republican resistance. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. One of my white whales is the Spanish copy of the 1892 lever action "el Tigre" rifle in 44-40, that was the secondary rifle used by the Guardia Civil and the militias.
It is always a rifle that is priced higher than I want to pay. Posted by: Kindltot at March 06, 2026 09:24 PM (rbvCR) --- Spanish Civil War surplus is fascinating, and I own one of the few Mosins made in 1938 that made it into Spain. This is somewhat controversial, but there is solid evidence that there was a shipment from the USSR to Spain in early 1938, and there are at least two other documented examples of rifles marked "1938" that came from Spain. It's generally held that only Mosins marked 1936 or 1937 saw service in Spain. Of course, lots of older ones also showed up there as the Soviet emptied their stocks of ancient weapons. I saw a 19th Century Mosin with a beautiful Czarist crest go for a small fortune and it was clearly out of Franco's weapon haul. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. @sentdefender The U.S. Navy is preparing to deploy a third carrier strike group to the Middle East near Iran in the coming weeks, according to a report by Fox News, with the USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77) and her Carrier Strike Group having now completing their Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), expected to depart from Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia sometime before the end of March for a regularly scheduled deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet Area-of-Responsibility. However, due to the ongoing hostilities with Iran, it is not known if she will relieve the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-7 Posted by: Methos at March 06, 2026 09:30 PM (vSvIl) 246

What are Gay Friendly Maps ??? Posted by: Franklin Stein at March 06, 2026 09:09 PM (38587) I dunno, but if anyone tells you not to visit a place on those maps, because it is a shithole, believe them. Posted by: Splunge at March 06, 2026 09:31 PM (jgJIy) 248
I remember seeing a video where some cop pulled over a dude for speeding, and he was some kind of foreign Muslim dude, and he knelt down in front of the cop and said "Mercy! Mercy!"
I figure that's what we're waiting for the Ayatollahs to do. Posted by: Splunge at March 06, 2026 09:33 PM (jgJIy) 249

There was a Spanish civil war zombie movie that was called in English The Valley of the Dead, and in Spanish Malnazidos
It has pretty accurate uniforms, and it is a Zombie movie where an insane German army unit is creating zombies to fight back the Republican forces, and zombies can't tell the difference Posted by: Kindltot Worth watching twice. So Biden spent millions of taxpayer dollars making maps "gayer". You can read all about it (link to Not The Bee) here: https://tinyurl.com/4pbfzjp2
But the short version is they made a website where gays could place pins on maps of Czechia and Slovakia to indicate places where they'd committed sodomy. No idea why they singled out those countries, and I have to think that most gays would find that to be retarded.
