Daily Tech News 4 March 2026

Top Story

  • Apple has announced its new MacBook Pro range with update M5 Pro and M5 Max CPUs and faster SSD speeds. (Tom's Hardware)

The SSD speeds are simple: They're still Apple's awkward proprietary solution, but the speed has been increased to PCIe 5.0 levels. I'm not sure how much difference that makes to a laptop, but it's not unwelcome.

The CPU story is a little more complicated. Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max feature up to 18 cores, though only 6 of those are performance cores, or what Apple has retroactively renamed "Super" cores. They are the same as the performance cores in the existing M5 chips, which we know because those cores have also been renamed.

But the other 12 cores aren't efficiency cores, they're "Performance" cores, though precisely what that means we don't know.

Also, there's no longer a 512GB option; the price has been increased by $100 but the base model now comes with 1TB of SSD.

Most importantly, the price of memory hasn't increased. It's not exactly cheap, but it's not much more than the market price for regular DDR5 modules now, and provides a lot more bandwidth.

  • There's also a new MacBook Air and, expected tomorrow, the entry-level MacBook Neo. (Notebook Check)

20 Evening and morning, late toilers and early risers! It's not so much that I am an insomniac -- I'm certainly sleepy enough in the evening. It's that I can't seem to sleep more than about six hours at a time. On occasion in the last year I've managed seven hours, but that's rare.

Anyway! Stuffy and warm, 70 F. here with high humidity and low wind. I need to work out. But it's hard to find my motivation -- it's hiding again. How about your morning?

Now I have no idea if this was covered under a tech thread in the past few days but apparently, California passed a law that all operating systems have to have some age verification in place (AB 1043). So it's not demanding photo ID and naturally, no one is going to lie about their age.

46 Don't really feel like working out; I'm tired from less sleep than I think I need. I can skip today . . . but then I'll have to work out both Thursday and Friday to get four sessions this week. And the next two mornings will not be any cooler.

Tonight I run to the library to meet with the tax help people. I just want to see if their software produces the same result as my pencil-and-calculator method. If I'm right, that I'm due a tiny ($100) refund, I can mail my return this week. Or maybe tell the IRS to put the money toward next year's taxes.

The tax session may not be much fun. If Linda comes along, we can go to Haagen-Dasz for ice cream.

49 I watched Lifeboat, the 1944 Hitchcock B & W classic, on Movies! yesterday morning. Can ya believe it, I'd never seen it before. Fine stuff -- writing (John Steinbeck), acting, camera work, directing. Suspense doesn't have to mean "crime" or "murder"; you can have just as gripping a story without either. "Man against his environment."

Tallulah Bankhead I'd heard about for years, but had never really seen any of her film work. She was remarkable, restrained where she needed to be, emotional when the scene called for it.
