When you have to nap, you have to nap. Avalanche rescue dogs on a ski mountain. A Labrador takes a trip on the adventure bus. I know we're all sick to death of superhero slop, but this old video of Batman bragging about having had sex with Talia made me LOL. Content warning but worth it. Speaking of bats, this should hold Duncanthrax over for a while: A bat cave is home to fifteen million bats. Contains the words "bat vortex" and "batnado." Dog is rescued from the garbage bin.

Nelson Ledges State Park (and race track, a Paul Newman favorite) in Ohio had a pretty crusty concession area in the 60s and 70s. One snack/beer bar had a couple monkeys in a large cage and people, usually from the Harley Davidson crowd, would provide them with beer. Drunk monkeys. They seemed to prefer Millers.

Man. Helping Ski Patrol train the the avalanche dogs was a hoot. Also having puppies at work all year was cool. Diamond Peak had two, about two years apart back in the late 90's when I worked there. They would hang with me in the summer while I did lift maintenance. I had a tennis ball thrower and would throw the ball WAY out into the sticks and they came back with it every time. Those dogs were the dogs world equivalent of extream sportsmen. I miss that life.

Saw Peter Gabriel at the University of Buffalo's Alumni Arena on the SO Tour. His opening act was Youssou N'Dour, who had performed on some songs on that album. During N'Dour's set, Peter Gabriel himself comes strolling down the aisle, wearing a suit, shaking hands and asking people in the aisle seats how they liked his opening act. Thought that was pretty cool.
We had a giant party bowl going and one of my friends offered it to Gabriel, who smilingly declined. "I have to sing in a few minutes!" Posted by: Delurker at March 04, 2026 08:38 PM (gtcuf) 68

The avalanche doggies are so great. What a great job for both ski bums and doggies. All avalanches are typically in the back country and ungroomed areas on the other side of the mountain of a resort. By the time the ski patrol arrives it is typically too late. Now skiers who take these risks wear beacons and some have, if they have time, the ability to trigger an avalanche airbag. Sadly some die even with all this and training. They know the risks and do it anyway. I used to like to ski but stayed in the resorts. As the lady said, the stuff I learn here. Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at March 04, 2026 09:39 PM (zZu0s) --- Aktually...yes. Surface combatants are different from submarines. Lots of examples of this. Submarines are different insofar as surfacing will get them killed, along with anyone they might "rescue" and they also have insufficient space to hold passengers. Early in WW I, the practice was to surface, force the ship to scuttle itself, and then take the captain aboard, while the crew took to lifeboats. Arming merchantmen forced submarines to use torpedoes (less accurate, few aboard) and that meant no rescues, no advance warning. Classic escalation spiral. What was barbarism is now accepted practice. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at March 04, 2026 09:45 PM (ZOv7s) 159
