Raphael Aldobrandini1.jpg

The Garvagh Madonna or The Aldobrandini Madonna)

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

It was owned by the Aldobrandini family for a very long time, but the last owners before it was sold to Britain's National gallery were the Garvaghs, so that is what the museum calls it.

It is really small, but impressive in its warmth and gentleness of portrayal.

If anyone wants to steal it, I will be happy to buy it!

Bizarrely, I just saw something about historical potty training practices. Apparently constant diaper wearing is a new development and infants generally freestyled most of the day until they were trained, which happened (not unexpectedly) , at a very young age- 1 or so. Might be worth studying more. (Also explains a lot of the free flowing dresses historically worn by infant boys and girls.)

80 dantesed - Mary wears blue for a couple of reasons: particularly in Byzantine art following the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, which affirmed Mary's title as Theotokos (Mother of God) and elevated her veneration. Blue became associated with her as the color of an empress in Byzantine culture, signifying her status as Queen of Heaven. Blue also carried deep symbolic meanings:

It represents heaven, the sky, transcendence, mystery, and the divine—evoking peace, purity, and the heavenly realm.
It symbolizes purity and virtue, aligning with Mary's Immaculate Conception and perpetual virginity.
Also, it connects to the Old Testament, where blue cloths covered the Ark of the Covenant. Mary is seen as the new Ark, bearing the presence of God (Jesus) in her womb, and blue underscores her perfect obedience to God's will.

A practical/artistic factor reinforced this: In medieval and Renaissance Europe, true blue pigments like ultramarine (derived from expensive lapis lazuli imported from Afghanistan) were rarer and more costly than gold. Artists reserved this precious hue for the most sacred figures, especially Mary, as an act of devotion and to glorify her elevated role.

He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born."

87 CBD caught the essence of the painting when he described the gentleness of the scene. The colors are natural and not garish. The poses are right, peaceful for a mother with small children. Their expressions are soft and relaxed. Any power comes from the viewer's knowledge of what will happen in the future. I like the tradition at the time of showing the landscape through windows. It provides context without distracting from the focus of the image. In this case it adds to the peaceful sense with the gentle clouds in a soft blue sky.

If I were a poet, I would want to try describing this scene in verse after studying it. Something metaphorical with a relaxed meter and alliteration to smooth the reading.

Proper programming languages, such as C, use zero-based indexing. As with the vast majority of societal ills, I blame the plague of one-based indexing on Big Penguin.

For those watching, Omidyar is a mixed Iranian-French guy who made a bundle from Ebay early on. And used part of his tech bro wealth to buy Billy Kristol and the remnants of the Weakly Standard.

Now Omidyar even has Billy Kristol turning and spitting on his past steadfast committment to regime change in Iran.

It is terrible to be a bought media whore and have your shame become public where you trash everything you previously and publicly stood for because of greed.

And Last is simply a minion of a minion downstream from his bosses and having to suck up to them. Horrible way to live by lies.

Posted by: From about That Time at March 05, 2026 10:19 AM

Via Grok:

However, you're correct that this isn't the first overall submarine sinking of a surface ship since WWII. During the Falklands War in 1982, the British Royal Navy nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror torpedoed and sank the Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano on May 2, 1982, in the South Atlantic. That resulted in 323 Argentine deaths and was the first (and until 2026, only) sinking of a ship by a nuclear-powered submarine in combat. It was also one of the few post-WWII examples of a submarine successfully sinking a surface warship in active hostilities.

There was another case in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War, where the Pakistani submarine PNS Hangor sank the Indian frigate INS Khukri.

So Hegseth's statement is accurate if interpreted as U.S.-specific.

Once the problems got sorted out (which took waaaay too long), the Mk-14 worked well. In the early '70s, it was held in esteem as the only combat-proven torpedo we had in inventory. They were used for practice firings. If (or whether when) one was not recovered after firing, practice shots were suspended for the quarter for the entire submarine squadron.

President Donald Trump's massive East Wing ballroom project is poised to get its final approval from a government commission that oversees planning for federal buildings and land in the nation's capital, despite receiving over 32,000 comments from the public overwhelmingly opposing the construction.

I'm sure the oppositional comments are based completely on logic, recognition of architectural norms, the building's aesthetics and style, the historical template for the design, the ballroom's proportions and ratios, the texture, color, and longevity of the chosen materials, integration with the environment, and its purposes and uses. Amiright?

Oh, that's definitely part of the equation.

Democrats tend to treat their weirdo candidates like normal candidates. Republicans tend to treat their weirdo candidates like pariahs. It's an uneven battlefield.

Hell, Fetterman vs. Oz is fucking ground zero of that in recent memory. Fetterman was an awful, awful candidate, but the Democrats just backed him. Oz was an okay candidate, and the right just treated him like he was some kind of retard.

However, there are obvious limits to that support. And nominating a dumbass former merc with a Nazi tattoo to be the Democrat to beat Susan Collins is beyond that limit.

>>China on Thursday set its GDP growth target for 2026 at 4.5% to 5% — the lowest target on record going back to early 1990s — as Beijing grapples with persistent deflationary pressures and trade tensions with the U.S.

Given the economic lies the China promulgates like every Commie regime ever, and a big chunk of that pseudo GDP (about 25 percent IIRC) goes to worthless ghost cities and development, that is a real GDP of zero or even negative.

263 How does Trump's maritime insurance screw the UK?

I'm told by reliable sources that the English are very smart and much better than us. Their accents add like 100 IQ points, and they're all gay, which adds like 300 more, and also makes them morally superior.

These ingenious sodomites should be able to offer a superior underwriting product that everyone prefers to ours.

And they should have no problem clearing up this dustup in the Middle East with their mega homobrains. Insurance won't even be needed with the leadership of these butt-punching sophisticates.

More Jewish mind control in the form of an Uno Reverse that gets everyone to get mad at Israel, causing Iran to build up their military and try to get nukes so that eventually Orange Man Bad would launch an iLeLegAl WaR on them.

Or something like that.

Kind of tough to keep an economy rolling along when 20% of your oil just went poof.

Listening to Brits talk about how Americans think everyone with an English accent is posh is pretty funny.

Because to the British there is just about one posh British accent. Everything else is some variant of gutter trash.

Is it because it doesn't apply to submarines? Or because the muzzies never signed on to applicable agreements?

Asking only because it did apply during WW1, and was, at least ostensibly, the reason we got involved.

It will have a massive impact on the City of London. Insurance, commodity markets, and foreign exchange are some of their biggest international market income bringers. Any hit on Lloyds will have a multiplicative impact, likewise the end of intel sharing with the US. It hits their financial markets as MI-6 and City of London are intertwined and I suspect any CIA info is released to City of London market types via MI-6 to make a pound or two.

289 I find all non-American (and several American) Anglophone accents extremely annoying, except African ones.

In descending order of irritating-ness:

1.) South African
2.) Indian
3.) Australian
4.) All English accents
5.) Scottish, most especially Glaswegian, which probably belongs at #2 on its own
6.) Canadian
7.) Boston
8.) Minnesota
9.) Chicago
10.) SoCal
