Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant![]() The Trump administration is considering invoking the Defense Production Act to ramp up the manufacturing of munitions, driven by worries about U.S. inventory levels during the ongoing “Operation Epic Fury” against Iran. This law permits the government to direct production priorities toward critical national security requirements; the idea of invoking it has surfaced in closed-door briefings on Capitol Hill, per people with knowledge of the discussions. President Donald J. Trump has openly called on defense manufacturers to speed up output, stating, “We have unlimited middle and upper ammunition, which is really what we’re using in this war.” Trump further stated that defense firms are operating “under emergency orders” to fulfill military demands. Is it an issue? Absolutely! We cannot allow our stocks to be depleted without a robust plan to replenish them...and fast! The particular problem of course is that these missiles are amazingly complex, and simply take a long while to build. Throwing industrial capacity at the problem is unlike that of World War II, where we were able to convert civilian manufacturing to produce war materiel in a very short time. In addition to the obvious (Boeing,Grumman, etc.) Ford, GM, Chrysler, American Locomotive Company, Singer, International Harvester, Frigidaire, IBM, and many more civilian companies shifted production to planes and tanks and aircraft engines and other needed materiel. The list is amazing, and includes companies like Steinway Pianos, Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corporation (jukeboxes!), Lionel, Hoover, and on and on. But...there is a small but rapidly growing niche, in which small and nimble high-tech firms can build advanced weaponry much more quickly than the traditional manufacturers. As an example, those $35,000 drones we are using in Iran are built by a small company that is barely 10 years old! Spektreworks has built hundreds of these drones that have been put to good use at a comparatively low cost, and more importantly, they delivered quickly! Is this the answer to our supply issues? No, but it is part of it. President Trump will need to pressure the large, traditional manufacturers to stop doing business as usual, and start producing without the procurement nonsense that anyone with a passing knowledge of the process will explain. They have grown fat and lazy, and Donald Trump is just the man to whip them into shape. As the nature of modern warfare changes rapidly, these companies must be far more nimble than they were. Drones were toys just a few years ago, and now they are a significant threat on the battlefield. A 10-year design and procurement pathway will not work! And countering the drone threat will be a huge market, with unknown technology that might shift the battlefield tomorrow or next year. Israel's laser-based anti-missile system is changing the paradigm already, and it is entirely possible that there is a small tech firm in America that is working on the next radical advancement. President Trump's dislike of regulation and the sclerotic pace of government and industry will be a huge driver of this sort of advancement. He has already set the tone, and I wouldn't bet against American ingenuity! [Crossposted at CutJibNewsletter and X/Twitter]. I read this this morning and I thought it a great idea.
We are sadly, HILARIOUSLY unprepared for a serious war. We have warmaking "industries" but almost no capability for scaling them up. We are astoundingly slow at producing ships, planes, tanks, and the like and have zero capacity for increasing that. Trump needs to change that and this could be a first step towards that. That's part of it, but another big part is that the bigs are unwilling to spool up production lines when they know the Dems will cut them as soon as they can. There need to be some sort of guarantees that those lines will be built and then left with no orders. Trump sees that. Posted by: Archimedes at March 05, 2026 11:05 AM (Riz8t) 12

The drones you spoke of are actually a reverse engineered Iranian (I forget the nomenclature) drone they build for about $35k.
These drones were just used in Iran. US ships fired Tomahawk missles to take out coastal missile batteries. They sent out the drones first and the Iranians blew their was on the drones and the missiles got by unhit. They also made the batteries light their positions up on RADAR, which were recorded by F35s and they were updated in the attack package. Smart and cost effective. -------------- It is a remarkable story. They reverse engineered the shahed drones drones originally designed and built by Iran. They then networked them, made them less prone to GPS jamming and more "nimble" in deployment. For the cost of one Tomahawk cruise missile you can have hundreds of these things that go all sploody. None of this would be tolerated today, never mind there aren’t enough smart people to administer such an all encompassing project. Wars should not be entered into lightly. But when they are, they need to be fully and completely engaged. Too much politics involved. War crimes are a joke, as is “international law”. They did early in the war, but eventually stopped because it made them easy pickings. Yes, German U-boats did sometimes pick up or assist survivors after torpedoing ships during World War II, but this practice changed dramatically in late 1942. Early in the war (and into 1942), it was fairly common for U-boat commanders to follow a more "chivalrous" or prize rules-inspired approach when conditions allowed. After sinking a merchant ship, they often surfaced near the lifeboats to: Question survivors for intelligence (e.g., ship's name, cargo, route). Provide supplies like food, water, cigarettes, medical aid, or a compass bearing/directions to the nearest land. In some cases, actively pick up survivors or tow lifeboats if space permitted. This wasn't universal—U-boats were small, crowded vessels with limited space and constant risk from enemy aircraft or ships Posted by: Archimedes at March 05, 2026 11:23 AM (Riz8t) Posted by: whig at March 05, 2026 11:23 AM (E4rtv) 92

BREAKING: Bloomberg reporting that China has just halted all exports of diesel and gasoline.
China imports about 11 million barrels of crude per day, with roughly 40-45% of that flowing through the Strait of Hormuz (mainly from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran). Their strategic petroleum reserves are estimated by analysts at around 90-100 days of total consumption at current burn rates of ~14-15 million barrels/day including refined products. Cut off from Hormuz and they’re staring down the barrel of empty tanks in roughly three months. That’s not a sustainable position. Their only realistic play would be immediate, heavy domestic rationing, factories slowed, trucking curtailed, civilian fuel limits, the works. That would slam their economy and ripple hard through global supply chains. https://is.gd/K4q9WH Posted by: Archimedes at March 05, 2026 11:36 AM (Riz8t) 149

People yesterday were wondering why the torpedo hit the stern of the ship. My guess is that it's because they're so accurate now, you're probably going to hit exactly the spot you're going for. Taking out the stern will likely break the keel, but if it doesn't, it will certainly destroy the steering and propulsion.

The single biggest reason our military industrial base has shrunk is because that is what the people running DC on both sides of the aisle wanted. Managed decline.
Look at the militaries of our "allies" in NATO. They have been on the same path. The UK Navy, once the ruler of the seas, is pitifully small now. Trump is the first leader in the west in decades that doesn't just believe in peace through strength he is living it. We never lacked the ability to churn out whatever military hardware we needed. Just heard on the radio that Trump is going to make an endorsement in the Texas senate primary in an attempt to prevent a run off. Point being almost all Commies- but China in particular- are all about talking a huge game. Any adversity, no matter how great, is only a minor inconvenience on the way to their inevitable glorious victory. The thing is, they are saying they are rationing. Nothing I say here is meant to diminish the efforts of our fighting men and women.
Politics interfering with the military efforts is nothing new. It certainly micromanaged the Vietnam war, shortened the 1991 Iraq war, so we had to go back in 2003. And politics made a mess of the wars of the 2000s. I fault the Pentagon too. Generals should have resigned rather than put up with bad commands. [iPresident Trump's dislike of regulation and the sclerotic pace of government and industry will be a huge driver of this sort of advancement. He has already set the tone, and I wouldn't bet against American ingenuity!
That would be great if American companies were hiring American engineers with American ingenuity. Instead, over the past 5-10 years, all American companies have outsourced engineering jobs to third world countries (mostly India, where most of the "engineers" are fraudulent with fake degrees bought for $1,000). So Ford, GM, Chrysler and all the rest of the "American" companies you listed in your post wouldn't be providing American ingenuity, but rather third world "ingenuity". Good luck with that.
