The coolest stove ever is sitting in our kitchen as we speak. Chambers stove circa 1930's. Gifted to us 25 years ago by a work friend whose parents bought her a new gas stove for her historic house.

The (not original to the house) stove that came with our circa 1907 house didn't have a working oven, and the stove was perfect for our decor.

He was by far the "worst" of the actual actors playing the role, but in fairness, it was a sendup of the Bond trope.

I still maintain that "Eliot" Page is the worst possible choice, since she is a neutered woman cosplaying as a man.

83 The American win over Canada was like Trump beating Hill-Dawg.

It was easily predictable for me, unlike for most people. Unfortunately, I gave up wagering when my youngest was born, so I didn't bet on USA hockey like I did on Trump '16.

But it was an easy one... most bettors bet on the past, instead of the present, and if past is prologue Canada should have been the sure thing.

Problem was, this was the first Olympic games in the last 14 years that the NHL released players for the Olympics - and Canadian pro players have been consistently outclassed by Americans for 30 seasons, and particularly for the last 10.

The talent pool was shallow for them, and deep for us. I only got it wrong insofar as it was closer than I thought it'd be - and I didn't know the USA would sweep gold - but I knew we'd sweep Canada.

114 43 Hello, Horde! 😊💕

The coolest stove ever is sitting in our kitchen as we speak. Chambers stove circa 1930's. Gifted to us 25 years ago by a work friend whose parents bought her a new gas stove for her historic house

Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, AoSHQ's Plucky Wee One - Eat the Cheesecake, Buy the Yarn. at February 27, 2026 10:16 PM (SRRAx)

The stove in the house I grew up in was a beautiful beast. Four burners plus a larger fifth center burner, over which a cast aluminum griddle would go. Oh, and the pilot lights had these little trivets over them, which was great for melting butter or keeping your coffee warm. There were three metal covers that you would pull up and over to conceal the burners when not in use. Sleek, is the best word to describe it.

To the left of the oven was drawer for storing pots. You used a match to light the oven. Start the gas, strike the match, hold it to the little intake port, and ...whoosh. Mostly, your eyebrows were not a required sacrifice to appease this oven-god. Mostly...

121 Without an almost supernatural performance by Hellebuyck, the Canadians win that game by three goals easily. Yes, the US won the game, but it wasn't because we outclassed them.
Posted by: tankdemon at February 27, 2026 10:32

It doesn't change the fact that I called the US beating Canada in both men's and women's hockey ahead of the games. It was predictable for me, even though my boss laughed me off about it.

Just like Hillary should have beat Trump, and didn't, and everyone laughed that off. But I won a good deal of money off that.

It's how you win big bets and I'm fuckin' kicking myself for not betting these games.

C'est la vie, as the Canadians say.

Ours has one big "cover" - called the mother-in-law cover - that pulls out over the entire griddle/burner area. To the right of the oven is a chamber that stores pots specifically made to fit in the Thermowell (the 1930's version of a crockpot). We still have to light a match (we use a BBQ flamer) to ignite the burners and the oven.

The selling point of Chambers stoves was/is that the oven is so well insulated that in the morning you can preheat the oven to 600°, let it heat for 10 minutes, then turn off the gas and put your food (like a roast or a stew) in the oven for the rest of the day. By the time hubby got home from work, dinner would be done.

159 I can't tell you how many of those old stoves I saw ending up as scrap when I used to do kitchens. We worked in older towns with old houses that were mostly 2 family houses. The oldest I remember was build in 1874 and most probably in early 1900's. Many still had gas pipes in the wall for lighting before houses got electricity. The houses were in the families for generations. The older ones always take the second floor, their kids take the first floor when they become adults and have kids, their kids grow up, grandparents on second floor die off, parents now take the second floor, and it just repeats. The end result is many of the second floor kitchens were ancient because by the time the older ones moved upstairs they didn't give a shit about renovationg. When I started doing kitchens it was at the point where all those kitchens were finally on the last legs. All those old stoves were there, and nobody wanted them. I would get sick watching those things go to scrap. We had to sledgehammer a beautiful 2 tone cast iron gas on gas because it was 100's of pounds, it would never go down the stairs, and most likely was assembled on the job when it was new.

Russian AKs are pretty much the worst, aside from the pre-1980 Chink ones (and the post-80 Norincos are no great shakes either, but still better than Russian ones).

The exception is Tula armory, especially the Korean War vintage SKSs. Those are good Russian guns with milled receivers.

But - in general, for the best AKs, you want to look outside the Warsaw Pact. For standard anti-personnel rifle configurations, I like Sako best, followed by Zastava-Krugevac armory.

For RPKs, Romanian ones are great, but sometimes the furniture burns under sustained fire - no big deal, it's all smoke and no fire, and you can easily replace that wood if it chars. Bulgarian ones are OK, too - but still, even with the milled receiver, it's made to shitty Warsaw Pact specs.

208 The think with the AK is that the button on the back of the receiver is pretty stiff, dust cover has to slide in just right, and the gas tube is always a pain to get out. 45 seconds is not bad for a tear down and reassembly.

Posted by: Kindltot at February 27, 2026 10:43 PM (rbvCR)

Yeah the thing with the AK is you have to muscle some of it. The button in the back, the recoil spring, and the damn lever holding the gas tube/upper grip. Nothing real hard, but nothing like the AR which basically glides apart. Some AK cleaning kits that I saw actually have a slot in the container that holds the cleaning parts that hooks onto the lever for the gas tube to give you leverage. I just can't remember if they were all that way or just certain ones.

214 Just got back from Trivia Night at the German Center. No, no National Socialist trivia. Our team, named '"It's a Wunderbar Life," scored 28 out of a possible 42 in four rounds. One section was all about streaming shows, so we didn't do well on that, and another was about things that are short; ditto.

The fun part was the names of the teams. Nearly everybody worked a German word or two in: "Hier Fur Das Bier," "Ich Weiss Nicht," etc. My favorite, though, was "Don't Make Bunny Use Her Westbank Voice." (A local joke; you wouldn't understand.)

The last round was "German Animals" -- the meaning of the German words for certain animals. Apparently "waschbaer" (sp?), which looks like "washing bear," is their word for "raccoon." Makes sense, though.

I used to bowl good when I was a kid. My father bowled once a week on a league with his friends and my uncle. I used to go and I would bowl a few games by myself out of bordom. I was 14, and was eventually bowling into the 140's and 150's. Then it ended up where so many teams started showing up I couldn't get an empty lane anymore, so I stopped. Years later I had joined this band, and after one of the practices somebody gets the bright idea of wanting to go bowling. How bad it could it be, like riding a bike right? Yeah, I bowled a 46 or 48. From when I was 8yrs old we lived in the house my father had built on the farm. All electric.

No one told me you had to light the pilot light, nor did I ask. The burners worked for heating water as far as I can remember. In college I think I had coffee in the morning, but maybe not. My fridge had milk, cheese, OJ and beer. I had cereal and bread.

I never cooked, which was evident by blowing the oven up. That came as a huge and loud surprise.

I do love cooking with gas now. After only electric in Florida.

Had an ancient oven in our first home and I told my husband I was only cooking on burners due to the stress of pilot lights. I am no pioneer woman!

This was one fear my parents did not consider when I moved West in college. Joining a cult was probably one, or being kidnapped and killed. Not dying from an oven blowing up.

263 and that is the AR-15 rifle calibers.

Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at February 27, 2026 11:56 PM (/lPRQ)

I did way too much research on it, just for fun. The 6mm ARC is interesting to me, not only because it was developed for operators (cave stalkers not door knockers), but also because it's the AR-15 equivalent of the 6.5mm Creedmoor.

The 6.5 Creed uses the same boltface as the .308 Winchester, necked down to a smaller bore, so it ends up with a long, skinny bullet that has a small cross-section for atmospheric drag relative to its weight. That's why it has such loft, being able to hit a thousand-yard target with a low-power cartridge.

Similarly, 6mm ARC is necked-down 6.5 Grendel, using the same boltface. And there's a company that makes a 6mm ARC barrel that is designed for the "Blackhawk Down" style of silencer, that goes back down over the barrel a ways, so it gets more air cushion with less barrel extension. That's kind of my dream gun, once I have the money... I think it would be essentially ideal for if the temperature on our cool (but no longer cold) civil war gets dialed up a couple more notches.

I put a dual fuel stove in the new kitchen. All the "bakers" over the years when I was doing kitchens would say electric was better for baking. I wasn't going to argue since I don't know shit about baking (no really). Mrs B is a really good baker, and since we had an electric oven in the last house I didn't want to ruin her mojo, so I went with dual fuel for the new one because there was a gas cooktop in the old kitchen here and I really learned to love gas burners. Ironically there is no gas in street, so I have propane just for the damn stove burners. We're just about out of propane and 5 different companies this past week said oh fuck you, no propane for you, you're small potatoes since we don't use a billion pounds of propane in a year. Bastards, i gotta figure out what to do

273 166 I know there's a million kinds of ARs, and I'm sure some of them are pretty simple. But they all look too complex, and it's why I never bought one. They're fun to shoot, but I wouldn't want the trouble of owning one. And they aren't powerful enough. I view them like sports cars vs. pickup trucks.

Long time ago I chose an AK over an AR. AK had the unbreakable rep and was much cheaper and the world was filled with cheap 7.62. That new Springfield M16A2 really appeals to me though. Have always been impressed with their products and I always thought if I ever got an AR I wanted a retro one

When the electric stove in the last house died we bought a glass top. I thought nice and clean. Then it took 45 minutes to boil water because you need pots with a perfectly flat bottom, and I mean like machined flat, or else the heat would just cycle on and off because of any air gap. We had to get all new pots, then it was fast.

I was told different things from each company. I have two 100 pound tanks. When we first moved here we used the company the former homeowner used. They came right out and exchanged the tanks. That was 4 years ago. It took that long to use both tanks. We called the company again, they couldn't find out account, and when eh finally dug it up his supervisor told him to close our account, we don't use enough. Another company who services our area tells us, oh uh, we just happen to not service your section of town. basically bullshit story. Another says, oh you use it for cooking only, oh fuck you, and on and on. There is a trailer/RV repair place down the street that fills tanks, so if I can't find anybody I'll have to bring the tanks there myself.

Tactical surprise be hard with a build-up/situation like this.

Little Marco's announced trip for Monday was widely seen as possible deception bait. It was noted that there would be no press accompanying, which is highly unusual.

341 All this talk of gas and tanks has taken me down Memory Lane, I went to a party with my big brother back in the late 70's. They were his friends, I was a plus5, anyway the main event was a tank of nitrous oxide that the host had swiped from his girlfriend's dental office. I was so unprepared for that.

Goodnight BC, you really need to get on the art thread more often.

Way up thread there were comments about JSND, he would always be here about this time armed with a wide variety of knowledge and facts. always delivered with a great sense of humor. I would like to buy a ticket for the raffle of his rifle, but I don't know that I am allowed to in my communist state. Hell, my kids would probably be reporting me under some red flag law or something.

Stateless finally reappeared, I am so glad for this, but it sounds like he needs more happy in his life. Stateless, you can make it as happy as you want it to be, but only you can do that.

344 This lot is only half an acre, but it's a bit much for just me. There are out buildings, 3 of them, to mow around and some areas that have become *jungle* because I couldn't turn my back on hubby for couple of years... the place is a mess and I barely made a dent in it last year. Am hopeful for this year, however!

Posted by: JQ at February 28, 2026 01:54 AM (rdVOm)

My last house was on 1/2 acre, and I had to mow it all, but I used a ride on, took maybe 45 minutes. When we were moving we had this house and the old house, so Mrs B got a landscaper to do the new house since I was renovating the old house and cutting that lawn. The new house is 2 acres, but there is about 1/2 acre of woods on each side, so maybe a clear acre, minus the house and driveway. I got spoiled having them cut the grass here, so I never stopped. I think I would lose my shit if I had to mow it, not to mention they do such a nice job. They weed whack and blow everything. I hate cutting grass because it happens in the frigging summer, and heat sucks.

345 Fox, US Israel attacks on Iran. Up now

Posted by: whig's phone at February 28, 2026 02:05 AM (E4rtv)

346 Farmer one "US official" comment to press that US coordinating/participating. Substantial US aviation presence in Israel (most ever, certainly) for some time now, so participation in defensive operations, as in June, certain. So far no Iranian attacks, but they will come (unless unconventional and pre-emptive efforts are better than is likely, though they could be very impressive).

Posted by: rhomboid at February 28, 2026 02:06 AM (U/Byj)

347 Cooking - induction cook top for the fastest water boiling, but other than that they're just as much a PITA as a resistive element electric. You need gas burners for the finest control, but not a stove with different size burners. Get a commercial cook top like a DCS, each burner is continuously adjustable from slow simmer to almost blowtorch. Those stove with the different size burners are better than electric, but the difference between that and a commercial is night and day.
Electric oven, though. An oven doesn't need quick adjustment, so an electric is just as good as gas, plus it has the ability to run the very high temp cleaning cycle that you can't get with gas. That's so.much better than gas for cleaning.

They will not allow us to FIX root causes... not after WW2...

ISRAEL SHIFTS TO WARTIME MODE

Hospitals are moving operations underground; Israeli airlines rush to move airplanes to airports in Greece and Cyprus.

Ben Gurion International Airport to shut down for at least 48 hours; Tel Aviv-area light rail stations open to serve as bomb shelters (Ynet & N12 News)

Other steps taken behind the scenes to protect vital Israeli infrastructure and strategic assets; air defenses on peak alert, Iranian retaliation is certain according to Israel's assessment.

The chances of this going off the rails are more than zero but now that this battle is engaged it must won. Still, on occasion, there are times when just wars against unbridled evil must be fought and this is exactly one of them. May President Trump find the strength to let our military unflinchingly do it work. And may our military unflinchingly bring those murderous Islamic bastards to a well-deserved demise. Via the national ABC news, it looks like the mullahs in Iran have received a major butt-beating.

Trump made a major statement, carried by the national news, calling for, among other things, the Iranian people to oust the government and take charge. The implication is that there are groups in Iran with the capability to do so.

I guess that there will be some Iranian-directed attacks, but I predict that a large percentage of the overseas Iranian operatives will, in the next 10 minutes, fade into the local desert, never to be a problem again.
