Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Evening Movie Post [moviegique]: Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't DieShockingly, I think I've only seen one other movie this 21-day-stretch, the 1945 classic "Brief Encounter," which is semi-relevant. But rather than talk about that masterpiece, I thought I'd give you a review of a new movie that doesn't suck--an increasingly rare breed. ![]()
As I sat there enjoying this film, I also couldn't believe that it had gotten made, as it's a dark comedy—extremely dark—and has not-at-all subtle message the world would prefer to ignore: Devices and social media are robbing us of our humanity. We are being manipulated by various forces into this, and we are also culpable in our own ultimate destruction. It's a fun movie. It's also, I hesitate to say, a thought-provoking one, and on a lot of levels. Let's talk about the fun, first. I'm not going to reveal much about the plot because the first two-thirds of the film is tight, and the way the script by Matthew Robinson (The Invention Of Lying, Bird Box) turns various elements from gag/commentary into genuine plot points is very enjoyable. The characters' backstory is told in flashbacks, and the first one seems so over-the-top and so social-commentary, until you get to the second flashback, which really gives grounding to the first one. I don't know, guys, it's like someone actually cared about the writing instead of just "Well, it looks cool." (It does look cool, though.) The movie opens with Sam Rockwell materializing at Norms , a Los Angeles institution, terrorizing the patrons by looking and sounding like a maniac. He's from the future and trying to gather a team to—well, not stop the AI being created a mile or so away by a 9-year-old boy, but to deliver safety protocols invented by top scientists in the future.![]() Experts agree: The Apocalypse can be more rewarding when shared with friends or last minute acquaintances. ![]() Also starring some extras from "Toy Story" and the "Bad Robot" logo. ![]() It's a message movie. The message? "We're doomed. But that doesn't mean we can't have fun!" ![]() POV: You're in an ensemble picture. I mean, you WERE in an ensemble picture. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I swear Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is based on the French web series Visituer du Futur, written by and starring François Descraques, which is about a madman from the future who has come back to the past to prevent his present which features acid rain, zombies and other cataclysmic results of bad decisions.

Ah, big bug movies. What would life have been like without 'em? Dreary indeed.
Them! was a delight, sure, but if there was a giant bug in a movie I was there. Three feet from the TV, ignoring homework and chores and the existence of everything but this afternoon's monster. The Deadly Mantis, Monster from Green Hell, The Black Scorpion, Cosmic Monsters (and who remembers that epic?), Tarantula, Beginning of the End... They just don't make 'em like that any more. The later ones like Kingdom of the Spiders, Food of the Gods, and Empire of the Ants just didn't measure up even if they did give Shatner, Robert Lansing, Jacqueline Scott, and Pamela Franklin some screen time. But if you're up for a newer weirder bug movie, there's always Phase IV. Posted by: Just Some Guy at February 28, 2026 07:57 PM (q3u5l) 35

|| A friendly visitor from outer space warns against conducting experiments with the Earth's magnetic field, that could mutate insects into giant monsters.|| Earth scientists: "You mean experiments like THIS?!" || But if you're up for a newer weirder bug movie, there's always Phase IV.|| "Phase IV" was a staple growing up. It was the only movie (famous Title guy) Saul Bass ever directed. It was actually pretty decent in the genre. Sorta reaching for an epic feel. My theory - popular monsters embody the deepest fears of the generation creating them.
Frankenstein was the fear of technology run amuck. Dracula was the fear of snd fascination with repressed sexuality in Victorian England. Godzilla and Kaiju were Japan and others coming to terms with the nuclear age and atomic weapons. Why zombies now? Because they represent the fear that those around us that we know and love can instantly be transformed into mindless hate filled monsters that want to destroy us and tear down everything we have, for no reason other than their hatred of us. They have no minds, they have no reason, they have no mercy. You know, leftists. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 28, 2026 08:15 PM (etYFQ) 50

Eons ago ('60 or '62 and some years after) the Chicago NBC affiliate would run a couple of sf/horror flicks at 10:30 every Saturday night. Cosmic Monsters turned up fairly regularly IIRC. So did The Magnetic Monster, The Neanderthal Man, Riders to the Stars, It the Terror from Beyond Space, The Crawling Eye, and a bunch more. Combine that with the ABC affiliate doing mostly old AIP horror movies at 3:30 every weekday afternoon after school, and this kid was in heaven. Years of that made me what I am today. Bug movies:
"Arachnophobia" is fun and clichéd. "Eight Legged Freaks," is also fun, but even dodgier. The director's strength may be in having Kari Wuhrer and 17-year-old Scarlett Johansson wearing a lot of tight shirts and shooting them in profile from close angles. "Matinee" isn't a bug movie, but it's got a bug movie ("Mant!") in it. The Corman roach-fest "The Nest" is entertaining trash. The '80s and '90s didn't have many bug movies, IIRC, I think because of the difficulty of doing the effects at the standard of the day. The '70s? Hoo-boy. My cinema highlight this week and bona fide member of the worst movies ever list...
The Creeping Terror (1964) If you want the fun version, watch the Fanboy Flicks review. https://youtu.be/MCL-YFazXTg If you need to suffer, for reasons, the full movie. https://youtu.be/r8KXgOkLJV4 It features a monster made out of carpet, a couple days before filming started, because the producer, Vic Savage, couldn't pay for the monster he commissioned. Of no surprise is Savage was sued repeatedly, and nearly was charged with fraud. For extra credit most of the dialog track was not used, lost, or damage and replaced with narrator. Rarely does cinema reach such a level. Somehow this flix makes you miss Ed Wood. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions at February 28, 2026 08:37 PM (BnDlA) 83

Might be annoying everytime you go to the Winn-Dixie to pick up some Moscato, but recognize that you are middle-aged and are no longer flattered by it. What they are thinking, "Looks familiar, where do I know her from...". I like Scarlett, solid 7, but she needs to lighten up or stop wearing skin tight leather pants to Winn-Dixie. This week I watched "Sisu 2: Road to Revenge." Our Finnish gruff old white man of a hero is back, but this time, instead of killing Germans, he's killing Russians.
A nifty action flick, with the first third of the movie having the best vehicle chase scenes since Mad Max: The Road Warrior. The CGI portions aren't state of the art, but I got the feeling the producers knew they couldn't afford top of the line stuff, so they intentionally left them a little cheesy. Plenty of gore, death, and destruction; mostly played for laughs. Definitely not a First Date Movie; unless your date is with Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS, in which case you have bigger problems. Overnight CNN and MS Now provided coverage of the Iraq air campaign that was something pretty close to straight news. That phase is over and both are trotting out leftists whose primary talent is to tell us exactly why Trump is an idiot. If these leftist lunatics ever get complete control of the federal government they are going to go balls to to wall to put Trump in prison for life.

The Creeping Terror. 1964. When I was watching every monster movie I could find. How did I miss this?
But from its IMDB entry it sounds like maybe I didn't miss it and my mind just blotted out any memory of it so that my brains wouldn't dribble out my ears. The Apartment? I liked that one. Wouldn't want to be around most of its characters for more than about 14 nanoseconds in real life, but thought it was a pretty good flick. The heyday of the Killer Bee movie was the late '70s, right at the end of the disaster movie era.
The Savage Bees, The Swarm, The Bees, Terror Out Of The Sky Four movies in two years. And they're all pretty solid "miss" material. The Swarm was the big-budget celebrity-packed extravaganza starring Michael Caine, Olivia De Haviland, Katharine Rosse, Richard Chamberlain...Fred MacMurray, Henry Fonda, Cameron Mitchell... Problem is, how do you bring a satisfying conclusion to a movie about a swarm of bees? Hint: Not by freezing them in the SuperDome. Wait, that was the "Savage Bees". Well, also not by luring them out to sea to burn them on an oil slick either. There aren't a lot of great options, apparently. Moviegique, I'm sure I recall a discussion here re The Apartment as well. And not only The Apartment, but a number of Wilder's pictures in the same thread. If memory serves, and it may not, I think Wilder's stuff came in for some criticism over his view of people in general. And gotta admit, Wilder's view of people didn't exactly lean toward happy-happy-joy-joy.

My favorite killer bee movie?
"Invasion of the Bee Girls" Written by Nicholas Meyer ("Wrath of Khan," "The Seven Percent Solution") and featuring a completely inexplicable plot where a bunch of women have turned into bee-women who are trying to propagate, but since they can't they, uh, buzz a lot of men to death. In flagrante delicto, IYKWIMAITYD. The lovely Anitra Ford stars with stalwart '70s 'stache-bearer Bill Smith. The bee-conversion ritual involves all the ladies getting naked and covering the new initiate in honey. Posted by: moviegique (buy my books) at February 28, 2026 09:01 PM (8/Qda) 112

I saw The Forgotten Battle, a Dutch movie about clearing the Scheldt Estuary in the aftermath of Market Garden in WWII. There are some pretty intense battle scenes but nothing on the scale of A Bridge Too Far. This is not about heroism; everybody is scared, hurt, lost, and alone. The overarching story concerns three strangers who eventually meet at the end. (One of the three is a Dutchman who joined the German army because of the promise of the socialism in National Socialism.) I quite liked it.
