I looked at the prices the other day for the 9100 Pro on Amazon out of curiosity. w/o Heatsink - 1TB - $209.99 2TB - $419.99 4TB - $814.78 8TB - $1646.30 w- Heatsink - 1TB - Out of Stock, but reselling for $259.00 2TB - $449.99 4TB - $749.95 8TB - $1599.00 Not exactly sure why the 4 & 8TB with heatsinks are selling for less than without. @32/Village Idiot's Apprentice:
All IoT devices (smart TV's included) should be on the IoT network. If you need to push data to them from a machine on the trusted internal network, create a firewall rule that permits connections in that direction, but not in the other direction. On my home network, I have several VLANS: a) Trusted internal network b) Mobile devices c) IoT devices (a) Can access the internet and connect to each other, and can access devices in (b) and (c). (b) Can access the internet but can not access (a) or (c). (c) Is in jail. Can not access (a) or (b) or the internet. Can not use DNS services. It gets an IP address from the DHCP server, and that's IT. Individual firewall rules are crafted for each IoT device to allow it to connect to only what it absolutely needs to (and no more) to function in a way that the owner wishes. (A smart TV with a NetFlix service would be permitted to connect to NetFlix's server IP range, for instance, but you might not wish to let it communicate with its manufacturer except when you want to download an update.) Mrs VIA suddenly developed a craving for steak yesterday, so we picked up two nice individual sirloins.
Now some folks swear by the grill, and some folks swear by the pan fry method. With having an electric stove, and a ton of seasoned cast iron cookware, I asked myself 'Why not simply toss the cast iron skillet on the gas grill instead of the electric stovetop?'. You just can't trust manufacturers to stay out of your business these days. They want to know everything about you, and then sell that to third parties. Oh, and I absolutely refuse to buy any device that says it requires an internet connection to set up, or requires an 'app' to use. Nope. Not happening. Your device either has the internal firmware in order to perform its desired function in stand-alone mode with a decent on-device interface with buttons/switches, or it stays on the shelf. I tried to discuss the concept of moving with Miss Linda yesterday morning. Her enthusiasm was on the same level as if she had been told she needs to have an emergency root canal. I can't drag her into this, and so I guess I have to give up. I'm on my own.
I thought of driving to Owensboro, staying a while, and looking at some properties with an eye to buying one I love. But staying in a hotel = $100 a day, plus the gas and effort to drive up and back. Unless I get *really* lucky, it's not going to work without spending two grand. I could drive up and secure an apartment; come back and have everything shipped; drive back and move in; and *then* start the house hunt. I'm tired just thinking about either one. But living here makes me even more exhausted. More coffee is required. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 27, 2026 06:03 AM (wzUl9) 67

In the meantime, I need to renew my lease at this dump this morning -- at least tell them to prepare my new lease -- and hit the grocery. Tonight, we're going to the German-American center in the city, "Deutsches Haus," for a trivia night. That should be fun.
As for the lease: $150 more a month for a month-to-month lease, vs. $20/month for a year. It would cost me two months' rent, about $1400, to break a 12-month one. But it's possible the place will be sold (though that has been only rumor for more than a year), and a monthly lease could easily be rejected by new owners and the price doubled. I might be on the way out by then, and might not. Still tired just thinking about it. Time I fed the cats. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 27, 2026 06:09 AM (wzUl9) 71
@63/NR Pax: Am I paranoid enough? Probably not.
@65/sock_rat_eez: Yup. There was absolutely nothing wrong with physical switches. Back in the X10* days, I'd considered replacing light switches with remote controllable ones from a central station, and then shook that idea off. If I want a light on or off, I'll just get up and flip the switch. It's not good to sit in one location for extended periods of time anyway. Get up and move around - keeps the blood flowing. {*} https://youtu.be/nkcERvE8bsI?t=52 Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at February 27, 2026 06:10 AM (O7YUW) 72

Wolfus, is your current apartment run by a corporation?
Might that corporation also run complexes in the area you are interested in? If so, asking them for suggestions might not be a bad thing. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 27, 2026 06:35 AM (iMotb) 95

Wolfus, you are telling yourself it's too difficult instead of just getting it done.
2 days ih June or July with a moving company packing you up is not even a speed bump. Posted by: Ben Had at February 27, 2026 *** Maybe so, Ben Had. But so much of this depends on other people -- I am in control of so little of it (I don't even have the *illusion* of control). And I apparently must do it alone. If I had a penny for every dollar that the Navy has spent on shipboard sewage system research, I would be a very wealthy man.
Not the construction, just the research. Some rather unique reactions take place between human urine and seawater over time. As well as meeting EPA standards for discharging stuff into oceans and such. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 27, 2026 06:51 AM (iMotb) 117

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder." Or "How can I miss you if you won't go away?" Posted by: no one of any consequence at February 27, 2026 *** I'm not buying a house and moving Linda into it. She will need to pay her way: ideally, part of the down payment; certainly, part of the house note and power, etc. Since she won't even discuss finances -- she has her condo, which she could sell or rent out -- clearly none of that will happen. I've told her we could buy more house if we worked together. No reply. Selling a condo here would be tough, though, and renting it would result in its being trashed. On that I can understand her reluctance. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 27, 2026 06:54 AM (wzUl9) 119

I agree with Grumpy and Recalcitrant's post at @38 to the point that I feel the need to implement it.
My Chinese built surveillance cameras are on a physical LAN whose firewall rules explicitly deny the cameras external access. (The cameras feed into a dedicated server running ZoneMinder on one NIC and the other NIC denies packets traveling from the other NIC.) I *do* have a couple of roombas as well as a "smart" reefer that worry me. Plus my work PC, whose owners are worried about the corporate ass and not mine.
