Yesterday I called around to some local moving services. One, the former veteran who employs veterans, called me back, and we talked a bit. He can have his guys load my furniture on his truck, then either store it or ship it right to my destination and unload it there. One company to hire, as opposed to several.
He sent me a link to record a video of my place, so he could see what kind of furniture he was dealing with. My phone's browser version was unsupported, said the phone. And when I tried to update, it insisted I sign in to Gorgle. I don't have a Gorgle mail account and don't want one. I recorded my own video -- but one minute, the living room only, ran 121 MB. Not sure that's gonna work to mail to him. I let him know, and we'll see. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 26, 2026 05:39 AM (wzUl9) 46

And of course there are problems with the paperwork for that long-ago pension from a long-ago employer of mine. The address on it was incomplete, and they had the wrong month and day for my birthday. The investment place is looking into this, but I'm not gonna see that money for months, I'll bet. And then they will send me the check and *I* have to get it to my IRA people. Wolfus, the best advice that I can give is for you to imagine moving that shit yourself.
Every time you move something around, the more chances something bad will happen. Your best scenario is to have a final destination ready when you are leaving an old place. Shit gets boxed up at the old place, gets loaded in a truck, driven to the new place, unloaded, and unboxed/installed in the new place. As soon as there is a delay, shit gets boxed up at old place, driven to warehouse, stored in warehouse, maybe moved around in warehouse several times, loaded from warehouse, driven to new place, blah blah. While that probably had an impact on the "how likely is your customer lying to you" side of the equation, it's difficult to believe that more customers force you to hire almost entirely sub-par agents. There's a discussion that perhaps should be made (not in this comment section) around how these really expensive military operations over time that don't require massive civilian attention result in a shitload of lying POS senior military officers. Well, maybe get a storage facility in the new town and have your stuff delivered there. That (at least) reduces the amount of times your stuff is loaded/unloaded to a set number. Plus, you *could* move stuff yourself from the local storage facility to your new place as needed with the level of care that you require. But, probably more money to do that. That's why I couldn't really claim that commissioned officers were more honest than NCOs. I've only had one bad interaction with USAA and it was for an auto claim that took much longer than it should have because of the agent handling the claim. All others have been excellent, including the claim on my damaged roof caused by Hurricane Helene. I was able to get the roof replaced within two weeks of the storm because they were so quick in processing the claim and I was able to get an appointment with the roofers before the rush.

>>>The first transatlantic fiber-optic cable is being pulled up after nearly forty years. (Tom's Hardware)
That's a nice little article. The author's bio says: Luke James is a freelance writer and journalist. Although his background is in legal, he has a personal interest in all things tech, especially hardware and microelectronics, and anything regulatory. ... which seems a good mix. The recovery operation is being carried out by the MV Maasvliet, a new diesel-electric vessel on only its fourth voyage since leaving drydock in January 2025. The crew has been contending with an early hurricane season, with storms Dexter and Erin having forced the ship off course, meaning it collected less cable than planned. The cable itself has to be coiled by hand in the ship's hold, as fiber-optic cable can't be machine-coiled without risking damage to the glass fibers inside.
======================== I'd have thought a cable that sat on the sea bed for 40 years would have all sorts of damage done to it just in the process of being plucked up, and coiling would be the least of one's problems. from the TAT-8 article, on maybe why they don't want to break the glass fiber:
TAT-8's cable still contains substantial amounts of high-quality copper used in its power and structural components ..., making thousands of kilometers of recovered cable a welcome source of the metal. The cable's steel will be repurposed as fencing, while its polyethylene sheathing will be sent to a facility in the Netherlands to be pelletized for non-food-grade plastics. I'm thinking you don't want broken glass inside the plastic sheathing when you're going to try to recover the copper, steel, and plastic. Posted by: m at February 26, 2026 07:17 AM (+YA9H) 120

I would have thought the 40-year-old optical fiber is trash at this point. What are they going to do with it? The article says they're after the copper wire in the cable, but nothing about what the fiber will be used for. Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at February 26, 2026 07:20 AM (VWtfl) 122

"The owner of a Sonoma County winery believes the industry is dying because Boomers are."
He operates a craft business dedicated to processing "small batch" wine grapes for an exclusive clientele. Award winning, of course. The industry loves bogus wine tasting panel competitions; at some point everyone gets an award. Looking at his very fancy website - he spent a lot of money on stainless steel fermentation tanks and accoutrements. He turned a money-losing garage hobby into a huge money pit. Or he knows that he has only so many seconds of life to live and using some of those precious seconds to argue with a troll aren't worth it. I don't follow him and I don't know how much he complains about anime's influence on the US. Japan has been a mono-culture for a long time and ideas that they have a defense against may impact non-Japanese societies the same way disease pools interact. (Our ideas can do the same to them; you can argue that may have happened already.) I guess my point is that he may believe that he has better things to do than argue with you. Don't you have better things to do than argue with him? If not, go for it. Posted by: Richard Cranium at February 26, 2026 07:33 AM (J8ZaT) Posted by: m at February 26, 2026 07:48 AM (+YA9H) 129
The Criterion Collection in particular has seen sales increase thanks to the streaming services colluding to piss off absolutely everyone.
At the local Barnes & Noble where my writers group meets, there are far more Criterion DVDs than non-Criterion. And probably more albums on vinyl than on CD. Sadly, the Criterion DVDs are all Blu-Ray and the vinyl is all expensive. But it is nice to see. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at February 26, 2026 08:12 AM (1NuH7) 130
