Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - February 25, 2026 [TRex]

20260207-IMG_20260207_101149178_HDR.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for very random mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted. Pants are optional. Giraffes are excused. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

The F-4 seems to be a favorite of the Horde:

I know what you are going to say. What about the F-14? Ok. Here you go:

***

Are you wise in the ways of the US Navy's Carderock facility in Maryland? They have a lot of water.

This tour of the indoor ocean involves a little math in the context of wave amplitude, but the scale of the place is impressive with or without math.

This is remarkable - World War I on the western front - daily time lapse:

There's a lot going on here:

Computing the optimal road trip across the U.S.

What's the most efficient way to see the US?

Criteria:

- The trip must make at least one stop in all 48 states in the contiguous U.S.
- The trip only makes stops at National Natural Landmarks, National Historic Sites, National Parks, or National Monuments.
- The trip must be taken by car and never leave the U.S.

The author and his wife compiled a list of 50 major U.S. landmarks - one in each state excluding Alaska/Hawaii and including D.C., and two in California. The used a computer optimization tool to map it all out.

20260223-best-road-trip-major-landmarks.jpg

The complete trip around the U.S. takes 13,699 miles of driving. Assuming no traffic, this road trip will take about 224 hours (9.33 days) of driving in total. The author estimates the trip will take at least 2 to 3 months to complete. You can start anywhere on the route as long as you follow it from then on.

Click on the link for the 50 landmarks. The link also has the Python optimization code if you want to make your own trip with your own criteria. With AI, you probably don't even need to know how to work with Python code.

You can stay in good condition too, kids, by doing the same. Be sure Mom picks up the Jumbo family size.

I guess the FCC cracked down on that. So we don’t get test pilots hawking their favorite breakfast cereals any longer. Fuckers.

That is the only way I got through my gout attack, and have prevented recurrent attacks without meds (I can't take them due to kidney issues.) Ice packs underneath the foot also help. God bless and may this run its course quickly.

94 World War I on the western front - daily time lapse

That was brutal.

Unfortunate that the key is so tiny. Here's from the description on YouTube:

Red - Germans & German allies
Blue - French & colonial infantry
Cyan - French cavalry
Orange - British & colonials
Green - Belgians in the north; Russians, Italians, Portuguese elsewhere
Purple - US-Americans

Dark blue - reserve
Light blue - resting & training
Uneven brown - building defense works
Uneven grey - staging
Solid grey - sanitation

========
What OS combo are you using? If Windows, then Brave works, the former Opera makers after selling the Opera browser to a Chinese company, now make Vivaldi which might work as well.

ios and Mac OS all use Safari code under whatever browser name due to Apple security requirements. Android and Brave work fine on a phone and brave has decent privacy and security options.

What some people though are facing is that most browsers are no longer being updated for Windows versions prior to 10. And fewer still for 32 bit versions of old Windows programs.

Supermium which is a derivative of Chrome is one of the few that works and I keep a version on really old Windows machines that occasionally require an internet hookup (and yes, I know about security issues doing so).

Two other suggestions : (1) Stay hydrated, drink lots of water, (2) Keep your feet warm at night, maybe an extra blanket on the foot of the bed. Uric acid tends to come out of solution and deposit in joints, causing gout, at lower temperatures. Keeping your feet warm can help prevent this.

Tomorrow, MiladyJo is having surgery to fix a problem she's suffered from for a long time. Respiratory Epithelial Adenomatoid Hamartomak (REAH). Blocked up nose. Relatively rare. Took a while to find an ENT in whose diagnosis and surgical recommendation we have confidence. It's an outpatient procedure, and she should be mostly recovered in a week, maybe two. Should improve her life greatly.

Good news is, we didn't get scheduled for barely-light a.m. like past surgeries, but for a leisurely 11:30 check-in. Actual surgery at 1pm, after the doc has had his relaxing lunch, preferably without the three martinis.

Ended up puking in the ER waiting room trash can.

Doc said "There are more in there but they may or may not ever be a problem, no way of knowing ahead."

Passed another 3 or 4 years ago. Actually, there were 2 about 12hrs apart, but only *caught* one for the dr. appt. Those were painful, but not like the first one. Analysis indicated "too much salt" in my diet. (There's such a thing?? LOL)

Watch your sugar intake and test for trigger foods. Fatty meats are not always a problem, nor alcohol. As noted above, they can be all over the map. HFCS is specifically to be avoided.

247 Blondie, if you try tomatoes in the ground: mix in a lot of compost (or even used potting soil) to fluff the soil. Water regularly and deeply-- slow drip over longer time-- to soak down to deep roots.

If growing in pots, use fresh potting soil and water thoroughly ~every other day, whenever soil is dry at an inch deep.

Tomatoes don't like their roots to get hot! Use a large container-- minimum 20 inch diameter x 2 ft deep, and shade the container with other potted stuff, or place it inside another, with a couple inches gap for heat to escape.

I am still kinda happy after the SOTU last night. I appreciate DJT every day, the European and Latin American conservatives are being taught by a master, the whole world really, they are all infested with the the same parasitic governments.

Blondie, if you try tomatoes in the ground: mix in a lot of compost (or even used potting soil) to fluff the soil.

Well I was never a big drinker, so I limit myself to one decently large shot glass at night if I do one at all, and I just sip it. Last night was special. I had 2, then looked in the bottle, looked like maybe 2 were left, and started drinking from the bottle, so I'm not sure how much was actually left, lol. I don't get hangovers. I actually slept good and woke up fine. I don't drink much, but I *can* drink.

274 Blondie, it's all a matter of practice and FUN! Gardening is all about trial and error. Good years and bad years. Try, try again & all that.

There IS no right/wrong in gardening-- it's "whatever works" in your yard.

Any given neighborhood has a dozen or more *micro-climates* ya know?

Something that grows gangbusters in your front yard, may fail miserably in the back yard. Sun/shade, wet/dry soil are the biggies.

Also handy for making Compost Teas or Leaf Treatment Teas in place.

277 F4 Phantom (feel good) story from 1986 I had only recently "Leared" about. A heart from a deceased infant was available for a 5 month old in need but it required a high speed flight from Fargo to Los Angeles. The civilian jet tasked with taking it to LA, apparently was unable to start its engines due to the bitter cold front that had moved in to ND. Enter the ND Air National Guard Cold War Phantoms. They were designed for the extreme temps and one was greenlighted by the Governor for the flight. I looked into the background of the story and the recipient received the heart in time and is living a normal healthy life nearly 40 years later.

I highly recommend it. Nothing lives here, I don't even see a house spider. But tomorrow? Really? What the hell are you going to spray? You can't even get to the frigging house.

281 Was surprised to see a dusting of snow yesterday morning. Weather-guessers had said nothing about the possibility, but it rained most of the day & then got cold enough overnight... It was pretty for a few hours and then remained damp/chilly all day.

Today started out overcast & then broke for sun. Should be mostly clear for a few more days, which is nice. Helps the attitude.

The F-104 Starfighter was proof of that concept. The first plane that could literally stand on its tail and accelerate.
They were also a maintenance nightmare, with a terrible crash record. The US Air Force got rid of them quickly because of all the problems. The Germans kept theirs; evidently Teutonic anal retentiveness was required to keep them in the air.
I had a fighter pilot in some of my classes in the mid 60s who the AF was paying for his BSEE. In a BS session he said, in answer to a question, that he wanted the F-106 in shitty weather or at night, but if it was clear, he'd take the 104.

Feels like I'm the asshoe... a couple more calls came in while I was out of the house today. (Landline, which is not 'unlisted') From AZ area code, same number each time. Probably BIL, who tends to call multiple times in a row-- check! according to caller ID-- and now I really don't want to answer.

Why? Because every time he *shows up* it's because money is needed for this or that. Hubby paid for his mom's and then his dad's cremation, after BIL had stayed with each of them until 'the end' and then called because he needed "help."

Then he showed up last Spring, with a broken POS trailer and needed "help"-- which I provided. But he wanted to see hubby & try to talk him into 'telling me' to let him stay here. Thank goodness hubby had enough wits left to leave it up to me: NO!

Now, these phone calls. No, the only thing it could be is pleas for more money....

So, I know that BIL has: ditched his POS 5th wheel trailer in S. Idaho in mid-December. Ditched his truck and phone somewhere in Cali in mid-January. Was picked up hitchhiking and taken to hospital in Cali late-January. Released from hospital in Cali.

Truck (according to State Police) has been impounded. Trailer no doubt has also been impounded by now. Then... nothing until last Saturday. 2 calls from AZ (BIL's home area) on Saturday. 2 calls today, also from AZ but different # than Saturday.

I. Don't. Want. To. Be. His. nurse, cook, maid, landlord, cna, *anything*

296 Yes, Bers. Like-- a 26?ft trailer. With slide-outs. It's made for living in. He & (late) wife lived in it, and did the "snow bird" thing for several years. Both deaf, both on SSI or whatever until she died in 2024.

BIL isn't playing with a full deck, imo. I cannot, will not, become responsible for him.

I suspect that he's been re-hospitalized ("Phoenix Patient" said called ID on Saturday, and some other name on both of today's calls) and they're looking for a place for him to stay or somebody to take over his care.

Not sure I'm a black sheep, but I'm definitely the most unconventional. I'm pretty sure most of my cousins have done better than me money wise, most have pensions, some are very comfortable. The one thing I can say though, none of them are worth a shit when it comes to mechanical things, or doing anything construction, or home improvement wise. I do have one filthy rich cousin who is worth some millions, and he told me that if he goes to start a lawn mower and it don't start and has gas in it it goes out to the curb. He would be baffled. Then again with his money does it even matter. Both me and my brother are the only ones that could build an entire house start to finish including the electrical and plumbing, and none of them know what end of a hammer to hold. I'm the unconventional one though, the crazy metal guitar player. I did have more fun than any of them though, thats for damn sure.

326 Bers, I was the blacksheep-- the one what dropped out of skool.

Older bro & I both got factory jobs-- he, a machinist, so... almost as good as college & got a *pass* for that, despite not going to college.

Me? Fk me, just a lowly assembler. Had good pay and bennies! But... still no HS diploma. (GED not good enough for da fambly, but got me da job!)

Younger bro & sis: HS diplomas, but no decent jobs. That's OK! They gots they diplomas! Pffft......

And yet, I was *the one* what got (stuck with!) the Powers of Attorney and Executor of Estate. Yeah, thanks.

327 I don't know much about framing although I build a few structures, but I do know plumbing and electrical. I could build a house, but I admit it would be a hack job with the drywall and cabinetry and roofiing. Flooring is simple enough. Windows and doors, lots of shimming.
