Farmer, 86, Rejects $15 Million Offer to Sell His Land to Data Center Developers ----- 10mm sockets go missing quite often. Here's a story about the US automakers contributing to that problem When Did US Automakers Switch To Metric Bolts? ![]() The 1970s were a turbulent time for the American auto industry. Not long after the decade's kick-off, the dense fog of the Malaise Era set in, giving us numerous love-it-or-hate-it models, many of which sported an iconic Bustleback design. Emissions standards were implemented, leading to the widescale adoption of catalytic converters (which was definitely a good idea) and brutally low engine outputs. However, there was one gleam of light that made life easier for professional mechanics and DIYers alike: it was when U.S. automakers began switching to metric bolts. The keyword here is began, because metric bolts didn't fully replace standard, otherwise known as Imperial, English, or SAE fasteners, for many years. Popular internet forums have no shortage of discussion revolving around this topic, but in terms of when America's big three automakers first committed, that would be the early '70s. Though, conversion was slow — to the point that some vehicles came equipped with both standard and metric fasteners.Much more at the link. ----- Got insomnia? I screwed up my action camera at the beach last year. Got seawater in it. I believed the hype about "waterproof to such and such."
Yeah, right... maybe in a swimming pool. Wave action changes things. Changes them into action cameras that no longer charge or transmit data over the cable. The camera still works, but in a pain-in-the-ass kind of way. So I replaced it and gave the damaged one to my wife, since she uses it way less - that one will be fine for her. But, of course, then I had to buy a waterproof case for it so that it doesn't happen again next time I go to the beach. And a suction mount and a wireless lavalier mic, because reasons. My neph-mew Maceo (MAY-see-oh) was forever delivered from the pain and suffering of terminal heart and kidney disease at 2pm on 2/22. He was a fighter til the end, and got one last car ride in his mama's arms. He passed peacefully held by his mama with his unka (me) looking on. Sad but for the right reason. I spent a fair amount of time reading and watching Canadian reactions to their epic loss.
What I learned: 1) As Runner said above, after the initial shock wore off, they are the sorest of sore losers. Most of them (and I'm sure all of them by the end of the week) stated that US didn't win, the Canadians lost. After all, didn't their team overwhelm the Americans with their masterful not-leading play for nearly the entire game? 2) A Canadian spectator estimated that in the arena crowd, Canadian fans outnumbered US fans 90% - 10%. I bet if there are three still alive, they could conquer Ottawa. One of the fascinating things about the revolutions that have taken over most western countries is that a handful of armed and trained men could have reversed them relatively easily. I often come back to the left calling the J6 protests an insurrection. Well, ok, let's run this through. Let's suppose a million armed Trump supporters descend on DC with a plan to work with Trump to stop the progression of the certification of the 2020 election. Then...it stops. And Congress and the SC flee or they do their damn jobs but the one thing that doesn't happen? The certification of the openly stolen 2020 election. So even here in the US or reaction to an open conspiracy against the country has been to...vote our way out of the problem, not take up arms. Posted by: 18-1 at February 22, 2026 11:22 PM (sKqQm) 239

The 3-on-3 overtime format (I see it in AHL games) is, easily, the best part of the game. Any game. Followed by a shootout if needed, the most dramatic finishing set-up in team sports.
The 3-on-3 actually permits some wide open hockey with emphasis on what makes the sport the best, when it's happening - fluid speed. No holding or stickwork or "checking" (i.e., these days, just hitting, usually from behind, within 3 feet of the boards, boring). Predictable and telling that so many don't like it. But watching some of the Olympic hockey, very disappointing. Mostly just more NHL, a tiny bit more playmaking on entering the zone, but not much. The 3K extra square feet of the international rink isn't enough to open up the game any more, probably mostly due to the size/athletic ability of players having increased so much. Posted by: 18-1 at February 22, 2026 11:22 PM (sKqQm) By the time Argentine President Isabel Perón had started the very first decrees to start arresting terrorists and revolutionaries out of hand, the Cuban backed revolutionaries had been killing robbing and bombing for about 10 years with increasing pressure. Generals Videla and later Pinochet in Chile increased the tempo and scotched the insurgencies eventually, and it took a lot of resolve to end. And the traces did not go away since the revolutionaries actually understood media far better than the dictatorships. Of course this time may be different because of the longer experience with counter insurgency and more savvy media abilities. Also Cuba is not able to funnel money in to support things . . . Nor Venezuela or the funding supported by the fastboat drug smugglers. And China is having issues of its own. Posted by: Kindltot at February 22, 2026 11:41 PM (rbvCR) 276

What to watch: The Three Specific Emails (JPMorgan/Epstein Context) The "Birthday Book" Outreach (2011): The email outlines how the bank could use Epstein's personal relationships with these men to secure them as "Ultra High Net Worth" (UHNW) clients. The Problem for Dimon: This contradicts his 2023 testimony that he was unaware of Epstein's activities. Investigators argue that "the top floor" of the bank was actively profiting from Epstein’s "black book" long after his 2008 conviction. The "Wall of Cash" Email (2013): An internal JPMorgan email discussing Epstein as a "top-tier referral source" for the bank's "Wall of Cash" program. The email allegedly notes that Epstein was a primary bridge to international dignitaries and intelligence-linked figures, specifically mentioning that "compliance concerns" regarding his past conviction should be managed to keep the pipeline open. The Intelligence Link: This is where John Brennan’s name frequently surfaces in the 2026 inquiry. And both Clinton's walking into Darkest Erebus itself (in a blue dress no less!) --- Back in the 90's my ex boss Eric moved from Oregon to Toronto Canada where he is originally from. One day his wife was experiencing sever abdominal pain so they rushed her to a hospital in Toronto. They made her an appointment for 3 days later and gave her a prescription for some pain killers. They went to 2 other hospitals and were told the basically the same thing. Frustrated, they crossed over into Buffalo where the ER took her in immediately and removed her (already ruptured) appendix and stitched her up. The doctor told them that she was about an hour from certain death. THIS IS A ROUTINE PROCEDURE WITH A 1.8% MORTALITY RATE IN AMERICA. The "Moscow/Russian" Date Email (2010): An email from Epstein to a high-ranking contact (recently linked to the broader "Clinton network" in the files) regarding a meeting with a "clever, beautiful, trustworthy" Russian woman. The Significance: This email is being used by the Trump DOJ to prove that Epstein was acting as a "broker" for foreign assets. If Brennan or Dimon knew Epstein was facilitating meetings between US elites and foreign nationals, their "doing nothing" moves from negligence to a national security failure. This was before it was discovered, just a sleeping fishing village on the Pacific coast. We hired a guy to take us out a few miles to catch dolphins. We'd give our catch to a restaurant and they would make a meal out of the fish for us. The beaches were wide and the water was very shallow a long ways out. We would teach local kids how to swim and their parents would feed us fresh shrimp and drinks. It had a small navy station there and once a week the sailors would parade through town. Very few of the uniforms match. Posted by: Beartooth at February 22, 2026 11:50 PM (ggkmJ) 294

I'm still wondering how people lose so many frigging 10mm sockets. Is it an out of sight out of mind thing? On a harley the only thing 10mm is the battery bolts, and I don't even know why, but they have been that way for years, and for that we use a wrench that we insulate with shrink tube because it only seems to be used for batteries. We occasionally get some part from yang poon, like a mirror, or some stupid bolt on crap that might be a 10mm, but in general no 10mm action. On cars I can see using it a lot because they got a fuck ton of metric bolts. Still, wtf is with the missing 10mm sockets? Its like constantly losing a 3/8 socket.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at February 23, 2026 12:12 AM (bss/y) The deepest analysis I have seen is that Scheinbaum is is a hard place, she can either let the cartels finally take the country, which will end with the US rolling in to stop the violence, or she can cooperate with the US and roll up the cartels, which will alienate the leftist elements of Scheinbaum's party. The head of Mexican security is pro US, or at least anti-cartel and seems to be the point that is linking the US and Mexican action here, and the US and Mexican navies have been working together for this year on drug smuggling. From my reading, the Mexican army and local police have a problem because they can either take bribes from the cartels or be killed, and the Mexican navy may be insulated from that sort of pressure. A simple CT scan would have shown the appendix issue before rupture. That and some bloodwork noting elevations, and location of pain in abdomen. Docs should be able to tell as even I could (McBurney's sign). Glad she's ok vs dead. Here in the US they can do the surgery with a laparoscopy vs open incision if caught early and not ruptured. I like zippos. I used to collect them. Not crazy like, but anytime I saw a cool one I would grab it. I might have a dozen or so. The only thing I hated was the naphtha burning your leg if you kept it in your pants pocket. I had a nice camo one that I was using, and I got tired of the leg burn. I put it in my jacket pocket and then then lost it while I was on the ride on mower sucking up leaves. Since it was camo I couldn't find it. Searching around a 1/2 acre of grass to find a camo zippo was futile. That was last time I used one.

I once had a boyfriend who gave me a Colibri lighter for Christmas, he had my name engraved on it and I lost it at a party.
I probably told all of you this earlier, but I found some matchbooks from my wedding to hubs and I put one of them in each of my kid's Christmas stockings. People don't do matchbooks anymore, it is so declasse. Bers, are you near the coast at all? We are getting some wind here now, but no snow as yet. I had a zippo that the hinge got weak on and the top eventually came off. I didn't know they fixed them at the time either. I think it was my last year of high school, or shortly after I graduated. It was a long time ago. I just bought another. They were everywhere back then. Companies used to have ones made with their logos. I remember having one with a red body and brass lid with some company name on it.

Came up with my own DIY method for starting a chimney of charcoal. I use a leftover toilet paper roll, six paper towels and some cooking oil. Paper towels are all in rectangles nowadays. I fanfold them so they're all laying on top of each other then pour a line of oil down them lengthwise. Roll them up and stuff them into the cardboard tube. Store in a Ziploc and in a few days the oil has soaked through all the paper and cardboard. Burns long enough beneath the chimney to start the coal and be ready to cook in about 15 minutes.

I think that I have a Boy Scout fire arrangement, at least this a the way my hubs taught me. I have a layer of crumbled up newspaper, with a topping of Dunkin Donuts to go trays. These sit underneath a layer of assorted wood trimmings from a carpentry shop and logs that have been seasoned in my garage for a couple of years. I am confident that it will burn and provide some warmth if necessary.

I usually have a couple 5 packs of bic lighters on hand at any time in my desk drawer. I keep one in my pants pocket, one in my jacket pocket, one on the bench in the garage, one on the bench in the basement, and one in the car. Then I have one in a drawer in the kitchen. Thanks for the fashion, Piper. I know that you've gone to bed. I am as far from a fashionista as one could get, but I don't understand boxy styles for models who are slim. The long peach dress is pretty as is the green and white one.

We had a pretty huge snow in the mid to late 90s, maybe '97. We had over 2 feet. My brother was pissed. We were getting steady snow for a few winters, so he bought a pickup that was nice, but needed a motor, so we rebuilt the motor, and he put a plow on it. The next 3 years, nothing, not a snowflake. He sold the truck, then boom, we get over 2 feet that winter. I told mrs B I want a quad with a plow because the driveway here is 30X100. She says that would make it easy. I said damn right, because if I buy it it will never frigging snow again.

Will "pay" for it when it's time to replace the all-seasons: they're getting worn and will need to be replaced soon. I see it all the time. If you have zero interest in taking any longer rides its not a problem, but the first time you do you're gonna wish you were on a larger bike. I'm talking like 100 mile ride, not across the state. I see nice softails out there for literally not much more than some sportsters. What kind of riding are you looking to do?? Is there any reason you need a smaller displacement? Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at February 23, 2026 02:52 AM (snZF9) 440

Never liked winter much. Don't like cold weather. In the Spring we get some bad rain storms but at least it warms up. The summer is hot but that doesn't stop you if you want to go somewhere. Fall is the best time of the year. It's warm but not hot and cool but not cold. I would absolutely hate to be caught in a blizzard. And I would hate to shovel snow.

I'm leaning to the smaller displacements as a nod to accepting that I'm growing old gracefully instead of pretending I'm still 20 years old. Most of my riding will be on back roads in the area with some longer trips. The rear suspensions on the Scout and the Sportster are giving me some pause about doing longer trips. I'm not sure if those can be modied much to address those issues. The mopes I hang with have the bigger Harleys and I get with those are about but I'm just not sure I would get the value out of them. Hell I might be just fine with a Rebel 500 If I'm being honest but I don't want that. I want chrome tailpipes.
