Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: The Biggest Boondoggle In History?![]() hen Stellantis last week announced it was writing down $26 billion, the CEO of the car company that now owns Chrysler, Antonio Filosa, said it was “part of a decisive process we started in 2025 to once again make our customers and their preferences our guiding star.” Which begs the question: What was Stellantis’ guiding star before if not its own customers? For that matter, who or what has been guiding General Motors (which announced a $7.6 billion writedown last month), Ford ($19.5 billion), and other automakers that’ve written down a total of $140 billion in just the past three years? Anyone who has followed the auto industry over the past decade knows the answer. All of these losses are the result of automakers chasing the phantom known as “zero emission” cars. Those losses are staggering, and while I would suggest that the Soviet Union's grand experiment with socialism was a more comprehensive economic boondoggle, EVs are definitely in the conversation; the arrogance and stupidity of the automobile manufacturers' executives is certainly on par with the central committee of the Soviets! There is some welcome news here. What the experience with the EV debacle shows is that consumers are still in the driver’s seat – no pun intended. And now we find the crux of the problem. Consumers are ALWAYS in the driver's seat. Companies that provide what customers want are usually successful. Companies that lose sight of that axiomatic economic rule are rarely successful. It's simple really. Free markets are successful for exactly that reason, and command economies will always fail because it is almost impossible to predict and guide demand through supply. I say "almost," because of course demand for EVs can be created by destroying the market for alternatives, but that is an economy-crushing behavior, and one that we see being played out in other countries. Experimenting with people's economic lives rarely turns out well, and America's astounding economic success is a result of mostly avoiding that temptation! EVs are the biggest boondoggle in human history SO FAR.
However, that's also because we have so much more money. It's like how every bad hurricane is the most destructive hurricane ever... because we have so much more stuff in the way for it to destroy. If we get to a boondoggle that's so bad that it knocks us out of the industrial age... THEN it will be the biggest boondoggle in human history. Until then, it's always just the biggest so far. The entire push to unseat the internal combustion engine when it's at the height of its efficacy curve was a retarded attempt at social engineering to better control the movements of the populace and nothing more. But central planning,... Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand"- i.e. "Gosh! It's what the market wanted!" makes a lot more sense to me if you think of him as a group of Malthusian Luciferians. There's a lot more money to be made from an abundant, thriving society of healthy citizens, food, medicine, etc., but the "free market" never seems to decide in our favor, does it? That's odd. I think in the larger sense, it is an inversion of World War II Strategic Bombing Survey towards Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. Applied to America.
To deny the ability to wage war, or even more importantly to mount a defense - by destroying key “choke points” in an economy. The attacks on coal, petroleum, gas & oil - energy. There is absolutely no viable alternative on the horizon. Nuclear energy held a lot of promise. But effectively neutered. Here's an idle observation:
I (and many others here) have noted that we NEVER had the power generation to support a move to full EVs. (Among the multiple problems with EVs). The foolish car makers didn't take note of the fact that ZERO governmental authorities (or quasi-governmental power companies) made any effort to increase power generation to support this "transition." IF they had smart people on their staff, the car makers could have realized their efforts were doomed. HOWEVER, now that AI needs massive amounts of power for it's Government REALLY wants the power of AI. For what purpose? (Hopefully they're just as wrong about the future potential of AI for their aims, but we're going to find out.) Posted by: Formerly Virginian at February 26, 2026 11:12 AM (zjgNU) 36
Say's law isn't about a given good creating demand for itself, but that the supply of one good is the source of purchasing power, ie demand, for another good. So universal oversupply isn't possible, while local/good-specific oversupply is.

Meanwhile, fascism is unfolding in Kansas for the millions of transgender drivers in the state.
As of tonight, licenses of trans people across Kansas are being invalidated en masse, enabling the overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know when you’re living through history, so let me assure you: that’s what’s happening now. Of course isn’t just driving. It’s voting. Working. Travelling. Picking up a package. Applying for credit. Applying for a job. Renting a room. Filling prescriptions. Visiting loved ones in the hospital. Not expired either, but legally invalid. The Kansas legislature passed a bill saying that your driver's license is invalid unless your actual sex is on the driver's license, not your made-up sex. The governor vetoed the bill, but the legislature overrode the veto. Kansas DMV sent out letters to the trannies saying their driver's licenses are invalid, as of today, and that you have to get a new driver's license corresponding to your actual sex. The Diesels have four (4) big batteries wired in series/parallel. About $200 a pop. They park them in the summer, and the batteries discharge and sulfate up in the heat, and come Fall they need new batteries. It ain’t their money, they don’t care. I’m sure quite a lot of effort is expended making rechargeables idiot-proof. They are fires waiting to happen, and require very careful monitoring for any sign of cell reversal. Every single one ideally is the same temperature, age, internal resistance, even the same production run and lot number, due to internal chemistry. One cell out of 3000 starts hogging current. People who push EVs don't have any idea what they actually are, how they work, what their disadvantages are, or how we will fix that. They want magic to be real, but it ain't.

Here's a thought: By choosing to defy genetic sex you are putting so many things in the hands of other people to make your life possible - your license, your healthcare, your ability to engage in sports. If you don't want to be "erased," then don't make your gender reliant on validation from other people and institutions. You are being *enslaved* not empowered by this. The corollary to the EV boondoggle is the continued fuel efficiency stupidity. Replacing reliable 6 or 8 cyl engines with scandalously self-grenading turbo 4 cyl shit still robs all but consumers of considerable means of any real choice. Either buy an older car, or bend over while the stealership breaks it off in your ass. The garbage built today will never make it to the used market. Cuba here we come...

They'll tell you the only reason a younger woman would have a relationship with an older man like say Leo D, is that they are naive and easy to control Then, since young women are their strongest demographic they'll tell you that young women are "the voice of the future" and the people we should get our ideas about politics from. Lucid widely misses earnings expectations, forecasts slowing EV growth in 2026.
Why aren’t large manufacturers licensing any of their technology, like their engine technology? Why aren’t Fords using Lucid engines? I'm assuming Lucid is keeping it all close to the chest because without this highly efficient and elegant motor and other hardware designs they've done, they really have nothing to differentiate their EVs. Or, their hardware has been severely overhyped. the hate in this sub for Lucid is always surprising to me. They make the best driving, roomiest, most efficient vehicles in their respective classes. And yet somehow they still catch so much hate. I still have high hopes for this company. Not selling any of my stock and just recently added more to my portfolio. It's in the red but I'm comfortable with high risk. It may look bad now but I'm betting in the next 2-5 years things are going to look a lot better... Cheap EVs!!! That’s all customers want. But carmakers are busy dropping $60k plus cars with 200 mile real world range with unpolished battery management systems and overly complex infotainment buttonless systems. ——- Taxation isn’t really about revenue. Not since they went to an “elastic currency”. Beardsley Ruml was a former Macy’s account executive who went to work for FDR and implemented income witholding. Prior to that individuals filed quarterly just like business. He gave a speech after the war, pointing out the federal government has a printing press, and no longer has a need for taxation as such, as was necessary when the money supply was relatively fixed or constrained. >Stellantis Profit sharing for Stellantis UAW workers drops to $0 for first time since 2011, Feb. 26, 2026 I tend to think where they - the alleged environmentalists AND big business - have us by the short hairs is electricity. Simply, the control of the electrical grid, investments, and ever rising prices. EVs were present in California and other U.S. states over a century ago. Early, popular electric cars were widespread in the 1900s-1910s, with significant numbers in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. The 1970s oil crises spurred niche production, and California mandated early ZEVs in the 1990s. Wind turbines gained significant popularity in the U.S. during the 1970s and 1980s; solar panels gained popularity and widespread adoption in the 2010s. Ebb and flow. Even now, wind turbines require power from the grid to operate internal components (motors, heaters, controllers) when not producing energy. Solar PV systems require inverters to convert DC to AC electricity. And, of course, EVs need electricity, too. Electricity is essential. Is strongly suspect all these massive write-downs aren't just because of EV. Car companies didn't just fuck the pig with EV. They made some other terrible decisions over the last 5 years.
Usually, when a company has piles of steaming dogshit on its books, it purges all of the dogshit at once, and blames the most convenient thing. Right now, the most convenient thing is EV. A few years ago, it was Covid, then before that the financial crisis, then before that ... This practice is so common it has a name: the "Purge Quarter." A company chooses a quarter, dumps all of its dogshit, blames some external factor -- never company management! -- and starts "clean" (or at least "cleaner"). Apparently the LA Unified School District has needed *$5.4 BILLION* to settle recent sexual harassment suits. No details.
Making the rubble bounce in terms of the state of the country, like so many other eye-popping atrocities, and of course probably many pathologies nested in this: legit harassment cases, or shake-downs ("me too"), as extortion via the courts is now a significant % of the economy. Anyway, even today, an astonishing number. And this is entirely separate (I think) from the apparent massive corruption scandal which has the superintendent in lock-up. I think people are focusing on the real result because they are so focused on pedo trafficking. The president of the WEF just resigned over Epstein. A former Norweigan PM reportedly tried to commit suicide. Larry Summers just resigned from Harvard. Obama's top lawyer Ruemmler resigned from the top lawyer job at Goldman Sachs. And many more. Epstein and Steve Bannon traded many emails about Trump. Reid Hoffman, who not only financed E Jean Carroll's bullshit lawsuit and a number of other election related interference projects, has gone to ground over Epstein. There are a lot of people going down because of Epstein and most of it has nothing to do with pedo shit. Money and power. Posted by: JackStraw at February 26, 2026 11:46 AM (viF8m) 184

Texas Tribune - "Dallas U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett has a double-digit lead over Austin state Rep. James Talarico in the final days of Texas’ Senate Democratic primary, according to a new poll released Wednesday.
In the survey, fielded from Feb. 2 to Feb. 16, Crockett garnered the support of 56% of voters, while Talarico got 44%. For the Democratic primary, pollsters from the University of Texas’ Texas Politics Project surveyed a sample of 369 voters, producing a margin of error of +/-5.1 points. As in other polls, Crockett had a massive advantage with Black voters, drawing 87% support. The Dallas congresswoman also led among seniors and voters without a college degree." Time to scale it back to where it works as part of a mix of transportation technologies. The same thing is going on with solar power. It works but it's not THE ANSWER. -------- Depends on the customer base. China is set to begin exporting ICE vehicles to North America (Canada) if things work out for them. It wasn't just stupidity that drove automakers to embrace EVs.
The heavy hand of government regulators can't be ignored. The Big 3 thought their customers would buy EVs because they wouldn't have any other choice (other than keeping their old cars.) If Kamala had won, new ICE-powered vehicles would have been all but outlawed by the end of her term. Automakers chose to get on the crony-capitalism bandwagon and team up with government rather than try and fight it. At the time it was a very understandable position to take. Having a product line that is illegal to sell isn't a great business strategy either. Posted by: Matt at February 26, 2026 12:17 PM (GggzH) 288
Great essay CBD.
I am forever amazed at the devotion to "climate science/change" among the worldwide secular elite. I see it here in my own community in spades; society ladies hold lunches and make speeches to each other about it, people buy electric cars and ostentatiously drive them around, and they talk about it at cocktail parties as common sense fact. But it's all silly make-believe, or most of it anyway. Only the amazing strength of the capitalist economy prevents these people from suffering the effects of making these crazy decisions. The wealth created by American know-how and hard work has saved us all. But will the ladies who lunch ever realize that fact? Don't bet on it. I don't believe the EV effort was only those things you put up there CBD. It was deeper and more sinister than that.
What they wanted was to upend the entire petroleum infrastructure; if you look at those companies, they are mostly right- leaning. If you look at the green ones, they are of course left. By forcing everyone to green, they get control of the entire infrastructure, and the means to production, and the money involved. Removing a great heap from the right-leaning folks. Then all of the other situations fall in under that- the pretext was 'save the planet'. Posted by: Mr Wolf at February 26, 2026 01:03 PM (L/m7v) 291
