Top Story

Japan is taking advantage of the fact that Taiwan's leading-edge chip factories are booked solid to re-enter that section of the market with a new joint venture called Rapidus. (WCCFTech)

Rapidus was launched in 2022 - well before the current chip shortage - as a venture between eight companies including Sony, NEC, and Toshiba, to regain Japan's position in chip technology. Its main goal was to introduce 2nm chips.

It's now on track to start mass production next year, scaling to 25,000 wafers per month in 2028.

That's a year behind TSMC and Intel, but in the current market they won't have problems finding customers.

Right now the most advanced chips produced in Japan are at the 40nm node. That's widely used in automotive systems and other embedded tasks, but rubbish for advanced systems - it was introduced in 2008. So Japan is planning to jump 20 years into the future in one go.

Or at least allegedly available; the cheapest model I could find on Amazon was $350, and on Newegg, $420.

I panic-bought a 16GB 9060 XT last month before the price increases and/or shortages hit, and so far they haven't reached Australia. Only the RTX 5090 has been seriously affected here, increasing in price by 50%.
AI chip designer Tachyum has been forced to close its R&D office in Slovakia because, uh, it hadn't bothered to pay its rent. (Tom's Hardware)

Or salaries. Or wages.

Fortunately it still has offices in California, Nevada, and Taiwan.

Unfortunately none of those offices exist.

Shipments of Tachyum's chip were supposed to start in 2027 but with this latest development that might end up being rescheduled to never.

Well, they're server drives, and not even the common U.2 format that is used in some low-end NAS devices, but the newer E.1 and E.3 formats.

Also, you can't get PCIe 6.0.

Also, you probably can't afford them, though fast SSDs haven't gone up much in price. It's the cheaper models that have been hit the hardest.

Most of the projects hit by this bot's proffered contributions haven't responded yet, but where they have, the reviews of the code and the bot's responses have been just as negative as the first time.

We finally have AI that can act like a human. Unfortunately that human is an autistic teenager of mediocre talent who learned all his social skills from Reddit.

And we have plenty of those already.

I use AI to write code but there is a give and take by what I write and what I ask the AI to write, which is largely narrow refactoring and not complete writes/re-writes of code and I have to work with it to produce what I want and get a good result.

AI can't deliver new features in and of itself without direction and input.

34 Holy cow. I just woke up from a dream where I can into a very dear friend of mine who committed suicide 25 years ago. He and I build an instrument that found the leaks on the Shuttles in 1990.

Because or instrument proved that a group in NASA had been lying for decades, we were punished. I was banned from my lab and Rich was shunned and hassled constantly. He kind of cracked up after I left the Space Center and offed himself.

It was so real, I was looking for a foam plate in the O&C cafeteria after getting off of launch support and decided to have breakfast there instead of going home and falling over. I turn around and saw him standing there, we both shouted out each others names and hugged for a long time. He looked older and grayer. I told him I was looking for a plate and turned and he was gone.

Was there some question about it during the ONT? I well remember those cars, and thought at the time they were handsome -- but not really a Thunderbird as we'd come to know it. The T-Bird had always been a "personal" car, as they called it then: first a two-seater and then a four, but with two doors. Making it a four-door (and erasing the convertible) seemed odd.

You could still buy the two-door coupe, though.

But, I found a better way to get to places we shop often AND I found a real Barnes and Noble.

I know people can be jerks (it was a 3-jackass trip), but there are usually lovely folks in the cutting table line at the quilt store. Shared interests, I guess.

I did that when I went to Amarillo in '14, and to Austin in '09. Well, there was some Interstate travel, but I got off the big highway where I could.

In '93 I passed through Hobbs, NM, and thought of the old joke: "First prize in our contest is two days and nights in Hobbs, New Mexico. Second prize is *three* days and nights." But I might appreciate it a lot more now. . . .
