A patient gave me an amaryllis for Christmas. It is on its 10th flower and has another bud coming up. The bulb is enconsed in red wax, makes no mess and needs nothing. I put it in a western facing window at work and it is happy happy happy.

Not so much a first world problem as an ongoing bitch. I'm a big fella and many things in the world are not designed for me: airline seats intended for anorexic midgets, those frickin' center consoles between car front seats when the leg room is a joke to start with, and plastic chairs in public that are appropriate only if you weigh less than the average firefly.
But can someone tell me why the finger hole in the middle of a DVD has to be so damn small? I can get just enough of my little finger in there to hold the DVD. Were they designed by some sylph-like creature who makes Tinkerbell look like an Amazon warrior? If it was just a matter of being heavy, that would be my fault. But even down to a good weight won't solve these irritations. Bummer and annoying. Mini rant off (for the moment). Posted by: JTB at February 15, 2026 03:14 PM (yTvNw) 99

Posted by: Notsothoreau at February 15, 2026 03:27 PM (+mUZM) I don’t have my go daughter to door to door. She does the booths (though this year, it’s been harder to do as many as normal, she is also now joining the youth group at Church and has tutoring and a leadership class Sunday afternoon after Church). She has her online link that her sisters have loaded up on, and my clients who know buy from her. J buys a boatload, because I am fairly stubborn about not asking him for a lot, he does enough with the house. Without us, he did not need to buy a 4 bedroom house ,etc etc. He takes them to Boston to share with his team when he has to go to the office. At a previous job, there was a south facing window on the 7th floor, with no office, but a floor to ceiling window. It was christened the Amaryllis Rehab Center, and there were at least three old amaryllis plants basking in the sunshine. Other plants showed up, and one of the younger engineers used to sit on the floor eating her lunch in there.

"before the multilevel marketers took over"
When my kids were in HS in the DC burbs of NoVA, the teachers all followed the AWFL mommies from bunco groups into Creative Memories, i.e. scrapbooking with more pricey accoutrements than God. Lo and behold, all of a sudden, every subject had a curated notebook, with color-coded sections on different paper in different inks, that you were graded on more than any test, and in fact could take to the test if up-to-date. My kids refused, on the grounds that they shouldn't still be coloring, cutting and pasting in HIGH SCHOOL, and how could it be a test if they were allowed to BRING THE BOOK? They took the lower grades with my blessing. (and aced every test, much to AWFL-teachers' chagrin) Posted by: barbarausa at February 15, 2026 03:47 PM (enw9G) 138

Wenda, That made me smile. Our house when I was born had doorways at 5'10" and an upper floor ceiling at 6'. My dad was 6'1". I'm surprised he survived. (We eventually moved into a Victorian era house with normal doorways and ceilings which must have been a relief.) My grandparents moved there when they retired but they were both short so no problem. When my cousin and I visited them, both about 6'5", we should have worn safety helmets. It became a running family joke. And sometimes painful.
