Florida Judge Refuses to Dismiss Trump's Five Billion Dollar Defamation Lawsuit Against the BBC

Ed Morrissey quotes from AP "news:"

A U.S. judge said President Donald Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC can go to trial in 2027.
Judge Roy K. Altman of the federal court for the Southern District of Florida rejected an attempt by Britain’s national broadcaster to delay proceedings.
He set a February 2027 trial date.
Trump filed a lawsuit in December over the way the BBC edited a speech he gave on Jan. 6, 2021. The claim seeks $5 billion in damages for defamation and $5 billion for unfair trade practices.

My bad, it's a $10 billion lawsuit. Though only $5 billion is for defamation.

The judge also refused to delay the discovery process. This, Morrissey notes, is going to be a problem for the BBC:

Discovery is what the BBC wants to avoid at all costs. Presumably, they would want to see Trump's internal communications as well, but the problem with that is that those have already been made public. The January 6 riot has been thoroughly and exhaustively investigated and analyzed in public, not just by the media but also by a House Select Committee and hundreds of trials in which participants were convicted. There isn't much that the BBC can glean in discovery, but that's not the case for Trump and his legal team when it comes to the BBC.

But will it be a problem for the BBC? The BBC can just say it can't find the documents being sought. Yes, you can go to jail for that kind of thing -- it's contempt -- but the BBC is a foreign corporation. What jail time could they be looking at?

I suppose the judge could just impose penalties on them, if he definitely knew they were hiding documents.

But he won't know that. He might suspect it, but he won't know it.

So I think this corrupt pedophile-enabling organization will just have a shredding party.

I expect that the BBC's legal team will be filing multiple motions on this factor alone.

I don't know the UKs laws at all, but I'd assume a large state-sponsored corporation like the BBC has some kind of rules concerning how long they have to keep all electronic/hard copy records, just based on the need to fulfill Freedom of Information requests alone, not to mention for auditing or lawsuit reasons.

They can probably hide some things, but that'll blowback hard on them if it's found out they did destroy evidence.
