Is This Something?

There's a new fantasy series about King Arthur called The Pendragon Cycle: The Rise of Merlin. (Pendragon is Arthur's surname.) I think it was produced by Jeremy Boering, formerly of the Daily Wire.

I think the series requires a DW subscription to review.

Reviewers are refusing to review it because a series about King Arthur during the period of the Christianization of Britain includes Christian themes.

Joe Rogan recently interviewed Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience. During their three-hour discussion, Avary mentioned that he's been watching the show The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin on Daily Wire+. He had high praise for the show, comparing it to the classic King Arthur movie, Excalibur.

"Mainstay producers are no longer reliable," he complained, adding that they're spending billions of dollars to make "Lord of the Rings things," while Pendragon was made for very little and has flown under the radar of pop culture. He admitted that he went into the show thinking he wasn't going to like it, but was pleasantly surprised: "This is, to me, as good as classic television."

So why aren't more people watching the show?

I reviewed The Pendragon Cycle for GIANT FREAKIN ROBOT. To say that I am "not its target audience" is a mixed statement. I love Arthurian legend, but the show and the novels it was based on embrace Christian themes that I was sure would feel too proselytizing. I agreed to review it out of curiosity, but I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Rise of the Merlin should work for a wide audience, but for some reason, it isn't getting the attention it deserves.

Major critics are not reviewing The Pendragon Cycle. The only reviews being given are from content creators and pre-existing fans of its host service, The Daily Wire. Despite advertising on social media, YouTube, and releasing trailers, very little attention has been given to Rise of the Merlin. Even Melania got the courtesy of bad reviews from the press.

Here's the trailer:

Thanks to Comrade Arthur.

There's a new Spider-Noir (Spider-Man, but as a noir detective type character) series on Amazon.

I'm burnt out on superheroes, but if you wanted to watch it, you can justify it on three grounds:

This is not a Disney production, but a Sony one.

This is on Amazon Prime, so if you're already paying for that, it's free.

Nicholas Cage stars.

It's available in two versions, black and white, and color.

Plane crashes and floats in the open ocean. Basically a reboot of Airport.

A movie called Influencer is about a "momfluencer" is a possibly funny idea, if Hollywood did not consider women a protected class that can't be spoofed. Influencers need to be mocked, but I doubt very much this movie will do it. They'll have to have a male, Joe Rogan style influencer character before they mock them.

This bit from Jury Duty was okay.

For those of you as obsessed with Sulu as George Takei is, they've done a documentary just about Sulu.

Jay Leno had a joke about Sulu. He said that Japan was crazy for Sulu. He said that in Japan, Star Trek was called Sulu: Master of Navigation.

That's a good joke. It makes you think.

Speaking of old TV actors, there's a new Jason Vorhees style slasher movie -- he takes orders from a dead "mama" -- with Lou Ferrigno as the killer.

February is not a good month for movies.

Speaking of February movie, they made a Wuthering Heights movie opening on Valentine's Day with Margo Robbie and some dude. Jacob Elordi.

You can tell it's a movie meant for Modern Audience because here are other cast members for this movie set in mid-1800s England:

The film also stars alongside Oscar nominee Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, BAFTA winner Martin Clunes and Ewan Mitchell.

I can practically feel the history coming alive!

Although, I see leftwing idiots complaining because the male lead is white. And they're claiming he's really black, because the book describes him as "dark-skinned."

Except... you know, when white people weren't thinking about brown and black people, which was true during the mid-1800s, they would frequently call some white people "fair-skinned" and others "dark-skinned." It didn't mean they were different races, just like a black guy calling another black guy "light skinned" doesn't mean he's actually white.

Roseanne Barr describes herself as a child, saying "a small dark-skinned girl." Again, she didn't mean she thought she was black. She means her skin was darker than the Anglo people in America she knew.

Anyway.

I think they made this movie thinking, "If we put Margot Robbie in it, dudes will happily bring their ladies to it." I dunno. I'm not a super-fan. She's just so desperate to be a big star. It's a turn off, man. I saw someone say about movie stars, they're cool because they don't care if you like them or not. That's definitely not the case with Margo Robbie.

I'm not a fan of He-Man, but this looks like it's in the right spirit.

There's a "He/Him" joke in there but I don't think it's pro-trans, but kind of the opposite. In his everyday life as the non-heroic "Adam," he may be a He-Him, but he needs no such pronoun clarification in his guise as the rippling-muscles barbarian king He-Man. I think that's the joke they're making.

It does look gay, but I don't think there's any way to make He-Man not look gay. It's a bunch of shirtless beefy guys tapping their swords with each other.

I watched this trailer for American Yakuza thinking, "This is great! It's just like a 90s action movie!" Well it is a 90s action movie. They just cleaned up the original print. It has Aragorn in it.

Exit question: With AI now this advanced, is Hollywood doomed?

6 I read the books and they are good, I recommend. It starts out a bit slow, because they are setting Mhyrddyn (Merlin)'s background and his ancestry. From all I have heard, this is pretty good at first and gets better and better.

Stephen Lawhead has an ... odd Christianity, he blends heavily with Celtic mythology, so don't expect orthodox Christianity or even sermons. But its full of magic, excitement, English mythology and faerie tales, and great action.

7 There are a lot of things, that are "things."

Hollywood isn't one. It's a dead industry walking, wearing a 1950's skin suit of itself while trying to remain relevant.

AI will kill it before Hollywood can kill AI.

*then AI will kill the rest of us and there will not be a movie of it.*

"Major reviewers" are part of Hollywood, Inc. They are what many call the "access media" - those with access to the Hollywood insiders and who get invited to premiers and given gift bags and bribes and stuff by Hollywood.

While I am sure the access media types wouldn't be down with "Christian Themes" or whatever, I doubt that's the reason for the review blackout. The reason is much more likely because there's nothing in it for them. The production isn't Hollywood, and so the access media at best doesn't care and at worst hates it on principal because it - like any significant independent, non-Hollywood production - is a threat to Hollywood and therefore to their own livelihoods.

I suspect its much more mercenary than it is ideological.

Robbie doesn't have "leading lady" star power. She's hot - for maybe another few minutes - but she doesn't have the juice to carry a big movie. Her "Harley Quinn" movie showed that quite adequately.

27 Hollywood killed itself and they still haven’t learned.

The reason you exist is to entertain the masses.

It’s not because you’re smart. It’s not because you’re edgy. It’s not because your politics are correct. For the most part it’s not even your looks.

It’s because you can speak a few lines and play a convincing part.

That’s what you got hired for. That what people expect, not your bleating on the issue du jour. Wwe could get that same opinion from a homeless guy.

So when you get replace by AI, who does none of those things untie some asshole programs it to do so, there is no sympathy. Only applause because you’ve finally STFU.

Nic Cage was the voice of the black and white noir Spider-Man in the animated Sony Spider-Man movies, the good ones with Miles Morales.

I love the idea of taking those Spider-Man and doing spin off movies ot their worlds. The punk Brit guy, the Indian guy, the pig, and little Penny Parker with her cute mecha spider bot.

But live action?

Plus, the Nic Cage one was funny because he was a droll, ennui filled foil to Miles Morales' energetic and optimistic persona. And he was trying to solve a Rubix cube when he only sees black and white. He was the funny secondary character. Can he carry a whole live action film?

79 Brietbart has this quote on the coming hollywood apocalypse:
The hyper realism of clip has tongues wagging and the clip has many in Hollywood worried over being replaced entirely by artificial intelligence and despairing that we are coming dangerously close to a new day when movies can be made without the participation of actors, writers, and other movie industry professionals.
https://is.gd/GqiaBb

This is retard thinking. Let's says it comes to pass. AI takes over movies creation.

First off, AI doesn't get Pitt and Cruise for free anymore than anyone else would. Even if all they do is let their images and voices, etc. get used, they still would have to be compensated.

And the writing? If AI can do a better job a low bar, I know - then have at it. But, that's not going to happen. Someone somewhere will be telling the AI what to write about and then checking the output. Ordering rewrites per direction, etc.

And there is no way that AI will be able to CGI the whole thing. It will still need real sets, etc.

BTW, Looker anyone?

85 Major critics are not reviewing The Pendragon Cycle. The only reviews being given are from content creators and pre-existing fans of its host service, The Daily Wire. Despite advertising on social media, YouTube, and releasing trailers, very little attention has been given to Rise of the Merlin. Even Melania got the courtesy of bad reviews from the press.

When these critics are fired because nobody GAS about their stupid opinions, this behavior will never be mentioned. Instead, it'll be "Bezos isn't supporting us!". Damn right, you fools. He at least knows who butters his bread, and makes sure they're reasonably happy.

111 27 Hollywood killed itself and they still haven’t learned.

The reason you exist is to entertain the masses.

It’s not because you’re smart. It’s not because you’re edgy. It’s not because your politics are correct. For the most part it’s not even your looks.

It’s because you can speak a few lines and play a convincing part.
Posted by: That Guy at February 13, 2026 04:30 PM (3arSl)

Peak Hollywood reflected the audience back at itself in a flattering enchanted mirror that made us look cool, effortlessly cool, Just Like Us! but a hundred times as charismatic, and in such a subtle way that we could imagine ourselves in their place and ignore the fallacy.

Such a neat trick was actually very difficult, like the toughest stage magician act; and they did it so well that at some point, they collectively fooled themselves into forgetting what they were doing, imagining that it was really as easy as the Top Men had been making it look. So they gave it all over to mediocrities out of fairness, and then Everything Was Ruined Forever.

State of the art needs real people and props, but everything else can be ai'd

"In livestreams in China, presenters don't even speak anymore - they just stand in front of the camera with a stone-faced expression, and the neural network generates speech and facial expressions.

It's impossible to completely remove the human element, the authors explain: platforms require a real person to be in frame, otherwise they cut the traffic or ban the account.

AI slop still needs humans as "biological anchors".

Watch the trailer again. The queen telling Adam she left him somewhere he would be "safe". The closeup on the "Adam Glenn He/Him" nameplate, followed immediately by the scene with the severe shaved head black HR drone saying "All this obsession with swords and nerd stuff...it's not a good look for HR". Adam finds his sword and it's the impetus for his realization as a hero who fights for his people by beating the living crap out of evil with four feet of sharp steel.

The message couldn't be clearer: the modern world is feminized, emasculated, safe. Only by rejecting it, taking up arms and returning to a world of physical conflict can the hero become the masculine ideal he was always meant to be.

We'll see what's in the final print, but right now this has Joker written all over it. And it's intentional.

Ghost Rider. Great character, great concept but not even Sam Elliot as a cowboy on a flaming skeletal horse could save the movie.

I never liked Heathcliff and hated both the main characters and their messy doomed love story... until I saw the version with Laurence Olivier, and I was like ahhhhh I get it. But I find him dangerously dreamy in any role he's in. (Rebecca etc)

I almost got all the way through that one, but stopped after four seasons. I'd watch this one if I had a DailyWire+ subscription.

Spider-Noir seems like a must-see just for Noick Cage in it. I just finished watching Fallout season 2, so I'll definitely check that out and see if the first episode is any good.

He-Man wasn't in my toy box as a kid, GI Joe and Star Wars took all of my time. But I enjoyed the TV series. This movie looks like it might be true to the series somewhat. Although the actor sounded kinda faggy with the delivery on some of those lines.

206 I asked AI "Is Nigel Farage moving left or right?".

Nigel Farage is strategically blending a fundamentally right-wing, anti-immigration, and populist platform with tactical left-leaning economic policies
. While maintaining his position as a leader of the right-wing Reform UK party, he has pivoted to adopt policies like restoring winter fuel payments, targeting disillusioned Labour voters and traditional working-class demographics.
Right-Wing Core: Farage remains a leader of the right-wing populist party, Reform UK, defined by strong anti-immigration stances, nationalism, and, often, a "pro-Brexit" position.
Economic Left Pivot: As of 2025, Farage has introduced, or supported, policies that are seen as economically left-wing to appeal to a broader base, such as reversing cuts to winter fuel payments and lifting the two-child benefit cap.
Strategy: Analysts suggest this "leftward shift" is a pragmatic move to challenge the Labour Party's voter base and to challenge the traditional political divide, rather than a personal ideological change.
In summary, Farage is moving left on economic issues while remaining firmly on the right on social and cultural issues.

I remember when "The Golden Compass" movie came out. An "atheist response to the CoN" that no one wanted. It bombed horribly so critics just decided that just didn't want family movies anymore.

248 192 For those that have not read Wuthering Heights…my high school Brit lit essay on the book was titled Overtures of Incest in Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. Dad traveled a lot, and one day brought home a little gypsy boy he was very familiar with

As I recall, for the AP English exam, in the essay section I argued that the Main Character of Wuthering Heights was both antagonist and protagonist, and also the narrator. I'm not sure how I pulled it off, but I got a V (full marks) on the test. I think I argued that the Point Of View was really an Unreliable Narrator -- not the Limited Omniscient that it purported to be -- with Heathcliff speaking of himself in the 3rd person and presenting a slanted view to make himself look better, when he was really the source of all of his own conflict.

If you have to read or watch it for some reason, that is one place where deconstruction can serve a useful purpose: giving intellectual enjoyment to an otherwise trite, dreary tale.

250 I always thought Wuthering Heights was a lunatic read. You could tell that Emily Bronte never got out much.

251 I am currently watching The Night Manager on Prime, starring Tom Huddleston and Hugh Laurie with good supporting cast members. Very good, really. I am cheap I suppose and have not gone “ad free”. The interruptions in the flow of the episodes by prostate cancer medicine commercials ( among others) is annoying. The harmonica playing doofus wearing a goofy hat that his fey little grandson copies vexes me greatly.

252 Nic Cage IS a good actor.

Well, when he wants to be.

Only one way to find out if he decides to actually act or not in this one...

I very briefly dated a guy solely because he looked a lot like Nicoloas Cage in Valley Girl.

No? Neither do I. Bring on the AI. I will shed no tears for these people.

257 I gender-swapped Aslan in my book. But it’s not Aslan. It’s the queen of cats, Aslani. Of course the cat god would be female. The gimmick is that CS got the idea for Aslan from Aslani. In the book, some Tall Ones (humans) know the truth about animals.

261 Exit question: With AI now this advanced, is Hollywood doomed?
______________________

My honest answer is, "I don't care." But, that's not to say I don't have some self-interest. There are certain works that I'd love to see in movie form that didn't have a prayer based on make-up. Here's an example:

Steven Erikson's "Book of the Fallen" series. I've read the complete collection multiple times, and my personal opinon is that it's much better world building that Tolkien. It''s story driven with action, adventure and intrigue as tools to promote that story as opposed to burying it. The characters are varied and flushed out. Some of them are absolute gems. Then there is the acerbic wit and humour balancing the macabre and disturbing.

It's just not a work that could be made into a justifiable movie without AI enhancing just about every facet.

So, I don't care if Hollywood does a header. But, they need to safisfy my personal whims before they go.

262 Someone made a short movie of the first part of the book: "There Is No AntiMemetics Division," which is a really wild science fiction novel:

263 My distant memories of it are positive, which I should discount because those same memories tell me that Apocalypse Now is a comedy and Moby Dick is a Western.

If they make that into a series, Glen Cook better get paid.
The Malazan books made my short list of novels I bought, read and threw out.
