Posted this afternoon on Ace's first thread of the day. ![]() ![]() Tributes are pouring in for "Dawson's Creek" star James Van Der Beek after his death Wednesday, Feb. 11, after a long battle with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. He was 48. Busy Philipps, his "Dawson’s Creek" co-star, shared a few behind-the-scenes photos from the making of the hit show on her Instagram in tribute to the actor, writing, "My heart is deeply hurting for all of us today." "Every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness, especially his parents and brother and sister," she wrote.I don't now much abut James Van Der Beek. I watched Dawson's Creek back in the day and saw Varsity Blues. Seemed like a decent guy, but what do I know. I do know 48 is way too young. Just like 47 is too young - (see sidebar entry about former COB John Ekdahl). ----- Liberals can't help but be offended. It's part of their identity. They also have little ability to appreciate humor. Real humor - not "safe" humor that adheres to their ever changing rules of wokeness. So why would a liberal set foot in a comedy club? It didn't work out well for one of them. Kudos to the comedienne for pushing back.
Two people were arrested after they brought a 14-year-old to a gentleman’s club in Jacksonville and provided the teenager with alcohol, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said. The sheriff’s office said its special assault unit detectives launched an investigation after they received a video on social media of the teenager inside of a gentleman’s club on Beach Boulevard. After a 7-month investigation, detectives determined that a man, Ricky Clark, 36, brought the 14-year-old to the club in April of 2025 without the teenager’s parents’ knowledge.Be honest - how many of you morons wish you had a Ricky Clark in your life when you were 14? ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

To answer the mass driver from the earlier thread: a mass driver is a rail gun. That is: it is an electromagnetic coil that fires cargo at insane thrust without propellant or explosions.
From the moon, the gravity is weak enough and the air thin enough (like, there isn't any) you can use a rail gun to send raw material off the gravity well immediately. Then some satellite just has to catch it. I think Elon / xAI wants to use the moon as a mining installation, and send cargo up to lunar or Earth orbit, so he can build AI servers in space. >> From the moon, the gravity is weak enough and the air thin enough
We got to discussing shooting rifles on the Moon a while back. I had Grok run the basic numbers (using orbital solutions) and the range is quite impressive. Interestingly, the muzzle velocity has to get pretty close to orbital velocity to start really getting nearly all the way around, but it's still pretty impressive. For a .223, typical muzzle velocity the angle for maximum "horizontal range" (great circle distance) turned out to be just a smidge less than 45 degrees. It was very close to the zero-air resistance constant g flat-plane solution. Maybe 10% more range. Now, when you get to bout 90% of orbital velocity, it gets impressive. The Moon has these pesky "mascons", which make the gravitational field very lumpy (deviation from simple inverse square). That perturbs the hell of orbits. Even if you shot a projectile at orbital speed from the highest mountain peak, it would crash into the surface before it made one orbit almost certainly. Close to the surface, those perturbations are a killer. They've mapped it out pretty well now with some of the recent lunar orbiters. IIRC, some tank rounds actually would exceed lunar orbital speed. You can hit a target anywhere on the surface with those -- you'd use a high lobbing trajectory. Because of those mascon perturbations, you'd have to put some maneuvering ability in the projectile itself. Not much fuel would be required, but you'd need some. Hi my beloved Horde!
Probably time for an update. The leg issue I described a while back turned out to be WAY more complicated than originally thought. Evidently there is some nerve thing going on which is generating a lot of pain and muscle atrophy. None of this is even remotely terminal, but it is the most frustrating, painful thing I have ever gone through in my life and they still don't know what's going on.....been CT scanned, MRI'd, X-rayed, ultra sounded, and shocked... This is why I have been derelict in my posting, the sawmill hasn't been used, power hasn't been run to the crafts shed, the coyote trap hasn't been welded together, the subframe for the tractor hasn't been installed and I got a sink of dirty dishes. I will not be blogging much, if at all, till this thing is resolved. Love you folks and again, this is not terminal, but some nights I wish it was....(smiley face icon here) Posted by: Some Rat at February 11, 2026 11:04 PM (TfUTr) 239

It also contains He3, which has been captured from the solar wind over the aeons. Very useful stuff, as Harrison Schmidt pointed out in his book "Return To the Moon". However, it's also nasty, because each particle is really sharp, never having been weathered (for obvious reasons). The stuff is clingy as all get out, and abrasive as hell. Dealing with regolith is going to be a huge problem for any long-term lunar settlement. Those lunar mascons contribute to the fact that is no real stable orbit around the moon.
In order to mitigate this NASA has decide, after much study, to locate it's Lunar Gateway in a crazy Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO). The huge drawback is that in order to rendezvous with it the lunar launch window only occurs about once a week. So if there an emergency that requires evacuation you have to wait for as long as a week. The same interval is needed for rendezvous from earth. There are some "frozen orbit tricks". They've got the Moon's field mapped pretty precisely now, and there are some tricks where you can choose an orbit such that various perturbations cancel out just so, and minimize (but not eliminate) fuel required to maintain the orbit. Oh yes, I recall some really unhinged ONTs. Remember when they often went over 1000 posts? The 1000+ posts were from the days before there was a Tech thread coming on around 4:00 AM, Eastern Time. There's a good chance that the combined responses' counts in today's ONTs and the Tech thread get close to 1000 posts. Proof is left to the readers. My dear Ace of Spades ONT,
Good evening... or rather, good night, as the case may be at this rather splendid hour. It is with the utmost delight and a touch of that peculiar wonder one feels in the presence of something quite extraordinary that I address you tonight. You, Moron or 'Ette, or indeed the collective spirit of nocturnal revelry—stand as a beacon of splendid randomness amid the chaos of the world. A gathering of the marvelous, the mischievous, and the merrily unclassifiable, much like the creatures one might encounter in the wilder corners of creation. May your links sparkle, your memes endure, and your commentary cut through the fog with the precision of a well-aimed quip. Carry on, dear ONT... carry on magnificently. I finally got around to watching the "Sun All Year Round" AI Amelia song, and both the music and the video are very good. I have a bit of an aversion to generated content, so I wouldn't have given it a chance it weren't for the message (which I heartily approve of), and so I didn't know that the tools had improved so much already. (According to the credits at the end, ChokingFox used Suno, Grok Imagine, and LipSync Video.) It's also the perfect use, since you can't fine or imprison a fictional person, or even smear her with rumors and lies.

Re Frozen LLOs: There four magic inclinations they discovered in 2001, 27, 50, 76, and 86 degrees which are amazingly stable. Well, they suspected them long before that. Some of the Apollo missions released little satellite-lets in lunar orbit. One that was in a 28 degree inclination and stayed in orbit for a couple of years. Another one, put in an 11 degree inclination, lasted about 35 days before hitting the surface. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 11, 2026 11:27 PM (w6EFb) 300
Checked Wikipedia and found out Gary Hart is still alive. Not sure if he wrote his own page, but it's a total tongue bath. According to the Wiki entry, there was no Donna Rice affair, he sagely predicted 9/11 years in advance, and if Democrats had nominated him, they'd have won in 1984 and 1988.

Harpers Bazaar Headline:
"Britney Spears Sells Entire Musical Catalog for $200 Million. She's Worth So Much More." Subheadline: "The landmark sale has Spears’s fans questioning what this means for the singer’s musical future" Britney Spears has ONE SINGLE SONG that most of us recognize--"Whoops I Did it Again". Anything beyond that is a stretch. For her to get $200 MILLION for her catalog is AMAZING--its doubtful she wrote more than a handful of her entire recording history. Harper's Bazaar says she's "worth so much more". Why? Does Harpers Bazaar not understand the future of recorded music is uncertain to say the least--AI might be able to provide bullshit "music" that the "proles" will put up with because they have no musical taste to begin with? And do they not understand the Spear's catalog is suspect at best? Spears should do an extra line of coke to celebrate the $200 MILLION purchase price--that should keep her wired up for a long time. And the subheadline they added is comically awful: "The landmark sale has Spears’s fans questioning what this means for the singer’s musical future." She has no future. None. She hasn't recorded anything important in forever. Posted by: Crusader at February 11, 2026 11:38 PM (Cjcf6) 317
