The Morning Rant

The petulance of Trump Derangement Syndrome is embarrassing, but in most cases it is childish political entitlement masquerading as "speaking truth to power," or some such nonsense. But when it crosses the line into geopolitical reality, TDS is costly and dangerous.

We can criticize the F-35 program on multiple fronts, but what it does superbly is mesh multiple different forces into an integrated response. It is simply better at its job than any other platform. The recent attack on Iran by Israel's F-35s is an excellent example of its superiority. It is the most modern war plane on earth, and there is no getting around that fact.

For Canada to consider a clearly inferior platform because of its economic battles with the Trump administration is short-sighted in the extreme. We will have to step in and buttress Canada's already pathetic armed forces if they choose the clearly inferior Swedish plane. But TDS is all-encompassing, even if it means jeopardizing the national security of Canada!

Why Experts Say Canada's Plan to Ditch the F-35 Is a Strategic Disaster

In 2022 Ottawa selected the U.S. Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II – a fifth-generation, stealth multirole fighter – committing to 88 aircraft to meet agreed NORAD, NATO, and Arctic security requirements. The F-35’s advanced sensor fusion capabilities and deep strike profile were seen as essential to defending vast northern airspace alongside U.S. forces.
However, that consensus about what it takes to meet these requirements appears to have evaporated. After Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review of the F-35 contract in 2025 amid escalating U.S.–Canada trade tensions, Ottawa signalled interest in alternative options – notably Sweden’s Saab JAS-39 Gripen E, a 4.5-generation fighter pitched with the promise of 12,600 Canadian industrial assembly and jobs.
In response to reports that Ottawa is on the verge of siding with Saab, U.S. ambassador Pete Hoekstra warned that a pivot away from the F-35 would strain or “alter” the NORAD framework, likely forcing the U.S. to deploy its own fighters more often into Canadian airspace if interoperability is lost.
Carney’s stance on the situation is undeniably political, reflecting ongoing friction with Washington over tariff disputes and rhetoric seen in Ottawa as unpredictable. Those problems have contributed to the growing unease among Canadian policymakers over a perceived over-reliance on U.S. defense systems.

I am not sure why relying on American military systems is a bad thing. We share a continent, a border, a language, and even some culture. Canada simply isn't big enough, rich enough, or technologically advanced enough to go it on their own.

Canada and Carney remind me of the joke about the mouse that creeps up to an elephant and begins to hump its leg. The elephant looks down, the mouse looks up and says, "Don't worry, I'll be gentle."

I can sympathize with other countries. Nobody wants their foreign affairs policies to be dictated by reliance on another country. That certainly includes us.

India is developing its own aircraft carriers, and the planes to go on them. No, they won't be world class, not even close, but they're really anxious to have an indigenous weapons capability. It's hard to blame them, but sometimes you just have to accept that you don't have the tech base to be world class.

China has dumped untold amounts of money into their MIC, because they DO have the tech base, and they want to develop it further. They accept that much of their stuff isn't quite there yet, but they're willing to continue dumping money into it because they can't really depend on anyone else.

Surprisingly, the Russian aircraft are almost certainly superior. The ChiComs still have to buy Russian engines to stuff into their home-built airframes if they want them to have any reliability or performance. Their huge J20 stealthcrap airframe didn't start shipping with Chinese engines until about 2-3 years ago.

In my little corner of the engineering world we hold to the maxim that any system with multiple capabilities might be able to do all its roles decently… but it won’t be the best at any one of them. Optimization for a single mission is a real thing…. It’s a whole other question as to whether we need optimized single-mission systems at this point. I suspect we don’t but don’t know for sure…

59 The F-35 have some level of ability to control UAV's. Armed drones. The pilot would have some autonomy over how those UAV's are used.

As a (potential) force multiplier, that's significant.

But it's very risky to have UAV's and manned aircraft in the same physical airspace, separated by less than a mile if you're not 100% confident in the system as a whole.

Trust... is what we're working on right now. The tech's already there.

76 Oh yeah, this discussion reminds me of another reason to hate Iran. The US Phoenix missile had a near 100% success rate before the Iranian revolution. After the Mullahs took over, they gave some of their US supplied Phoenix missiles to the Soviets. The Soviets were then able to spoof the Phoenix and that required a complete redesign to make the Phoenix guidance work again, and even then, it is not as effective as it was before.

I haven't watched then all yet, I have an order of DVDs coming from, but I think Sympathy for Mister Vengeance might be his best drama. Lady Vengeance has the best scene transitions I think I've seen in a movie though.

Korean cinema is really underrated. It's better than Hollywood in everything but SFX and better than Japanese cinema made in the past 30 years.

Because taking out ground troops is only one aspect of warfare. We're going to need both autonomous systems for a variety of roles, but also platforms with a human in the loop, at least for awhile. There will be an ever-present danger that the enemy will figure out how to disrupt our communications with the platforms, or in the case of full autonomy, scramble its "thinking".

The biggest danger, IMHO, is the ability to park a pedestrian container full of attack drones somewhere near large military and infrastructure assets. It doesn't matter how good your platform is if it's a pile of smoking slag in a hangar.

More advanced radars and sensors give you more capabilities to track and intercept drones. You also need a fighter that can effectively engage enemy fighters that are hunting your drone killers.

You could employ a bunch of F-4s to hunt enemy drones, but you'll quickly run out of pilots to fly them, and once your ground based radars are destroyed and AWACS is shot down they're going to struggle to even spot drones.

I think it gets even worse for them when actual combat readiness is taken into account. The corruption in Europe is so bad, even when they had plenty of time -- not pressed by enemy forces, just sending war machines to Ukraine at their leisure -- a lot of them were unusable, and just went straight to the "cannibalize for parts" section.

Even if they hadn't spent their arsenal in Ukraine. The Russians couldn't invade the rest of Europe. Their logistics would turn it into a turkey shoot. The different gauge rail lines would force large concentrations of material. The entire NATO war machine is built to blow up your stuff and deny it to you. The Russians still insist on running their army on big, rail based piles of stuff.

238 When the topic of drones is raised I often think of Michael Crichton’s novel Prey… which dealt with swarms of nano bots…. If you could get non-nano ( regular sized) drones to do coordinated activities in large swarms (10,000 or more) I’d think that would be a very formidable destructive military force

Large swarms are no longer inexpensive.

Pakistan just recently sent over 1000 drones at India, and India appears to have very successfully defended themselves using AA and jamming.
