You're obviously missing my point.

It's about popularity.

Elric is saying The Godfather is only popular because people have been told to think that way. Hence, it's 9.3 rating is fake. However, people have been told to like Salo for decades, and its rating is 5.3.

So, these authorities informing people of the correct opinion are either massively influential, convincing people of opinions they don't have, or they have no influence at all, and their opinions on boring, ugly things don't actually move other people.

214 Late to the thread, dammit!

I like this one as an example of Impressionism. The swirling brush strokes and discrete colors manage to blend into an image that resonates. The woman's figure of course but also the hint of wall paper and mirror frame without being literal is effective at creating a mood. And there is a sense of movement as she finishes cinching the gown.

Part of the appeal for me is she doesn't seem to be an ingenue preparing for a dance, excited with anticipation. Her arms with a few wrinkles suggest an older woman checking to see if her image in the glass matches her memories of what it is supposed to be.

I believe there is a line from Heinlein that "there was never a girl born who ever grew older than eighteen in her heart".

If we're on movies - lemme tell ya this. Don't watch a movie called "The Badge." They should have saved a couple letters and called it "The Bad."

I watched it because it has Billy Bob Thornton, and I like some of his movies. Wrong bet.

This movie was slow.

The characters were all broad caricatures except for his, and that was still pretty bad; even a decent actor can only do so much with shit writing and flat interactions with people like Patricia Arquette and William Devane playing straight to type.

The plot was insanely stupid, and the denouement rendered the entire movie pointless - I suspect the studio wedged in some new ending after it tested poorly, because it's a trainwreck.

And last but not least, this was a preachy, proto-woke (this was 2002), nonstop fuckin' lecture about hatred and bigotry in America's heartland against homosexuals and trannies. Pukeworthy social scolding about a problem that doesn't and didn't exist.

Saw "Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die" yesterday.

Eh, I give it a B or a C, I vassalage on this opinion, because-

Also the script seems like it was about 3 scripts mashed together.

It's hard to explain why without a lot of spoilers, so I guess I'll avoid doing that.

I will say that the basic idea behind the film is great and would be a classic if well-done.

This was not well done.

See it if you have a high tolerance for silliness and illogical plotting.

Made by Pier Paolo Pasolini, an Italian Marxist who was actually very good at making movies, the death of some Italian communist leader sent him on a spiral mentally where he stopped trying to tell stories and just started making diatribes about how the people he disagreed with on matters of politics were unthinking monsters.

Costa-Gavras' film Z holds a special place in my heart. Overall, the film is appallingly amateurish, ham-handed commie whining about the bad old conservative Greek military junta. But when the villain gets into hot water over the murder of an opposition commie politician, all of the commie prosecutors and witnesses get arrested, commit "suicide" or are thrown down elevator shafts.

That commie Costa-Gavras sure did produce the feel-good foreign film of 1969.

The original cut of the film was hard-core XXX porn. But that was in the days when obscenity laws could get you arrested. And they did. The director was forced to cut out all the very explicit sex. The original cut can't be located, and is considered lost.

GWTW is a great film, but it requires a 4 hour investment of time, whereas Sharknado is 88 minute of silliness, and if given my druthers, I'm watching Sharknado over GWTW every time.

283 I saw Wuthering Heights yesterday.

Imagine A24 made a horror film out of classic British literature.

Seriously, the set design and music is straight out of something like Gretel and Hansel. It's weird. Cathy's room in her mansion is painted the color of her skin...including veins.

Also, the derangement of the two main characters is dialed up to 11.

It's an odd film.

I didn't like the book and never had any interest in any film adaptions. But my take on the new film is that the studio knows the film is crap, and is trying to trick audiences into seeing it by playing up what amounts to monster romance.

Speaking of schlocky B-movies, I watched Primitive War over the weekend. Imagine if Platoon had dinosaurs and there's your concept. Bad acting, cheap special effects (although considering the micro-budget they had to work with, they did a great job), Vietnam War cliches (for Dog's sake, stop using CCR's Fortunate Son in the soundtrack).

And it's awesome, if only for the scene with two T-rexes vengefully rampaging through a secret Soviet base in the Vietnamese jungle, eating commies like Michael Moore scarfing down a bag of Oreos.

Salo is his final film (he was murdered by a young man he was trying to pick up for sex shortly after finishing it), and it's no more than polemic. I detest it.

Salo was the name of the stranded on Titan Tralfamadorian robot who was awaiting a part from Earth for repairing his damaged spaceship after thousands of years of his home world's manipulating Earth's history to get said part delivered to him in Vonnegut's "The Sirens of Titan".
