Hobby Thread - February 7, 2026 [TRex]

20260207-image(3).jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. We gave the Ace of Spades Wheel of Hobbies (TM) a spin and it landed on decoupage and epoxy resin.

***

What are you hobbying?

As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. All (legal) hobbying is welcome. Discussion of current events, religion and politics can elsewhere. Pants are optional. As always, puns are welcome and encouraged.

Play nice. Don't be a troll and do not feed the trolls.

***

Decoupage? Sacre bleu! Has Ace of Spades gone French? What is decoupage?

My AI machine says that "Decoupage is the art of decorating surfaces (wood, glass, metal) by gluing paper cutouts - such as napkins, tissue paper, or specialized paper - onto them, then sealing with layers of varnish to create a seamless, painted-on effect. Originating from the French word "decouper" (to cut out), this versatile, beginner-friendly craft is used to customize or upcycle furniture, boxes, and home decor items."

This thread was headed in an entirely different direction before I clarified that decoupage is different than decolletage. Who knew? Never let it be said that AoS is not educational.

As you might guess, you Hobby Thread host is not wise in the ways of decoupage but thinking that some among the Horde are familiar and can add wisdom in the gray boxes.

This lady from Hobby Lobby shows how its done:

***

Apparently, you can decoupage on glass too? Impressive. (This video has a piano music and an artist with an accent. Classy.)

This one has subtitles and no talking (which is a bonus). How to decoupage a box with a napkin.

***

This is furniture restoration using decoupage to decorate the top and then resin to seal it in.

Apparently restoring furniture with napkins or tissue paper is a thing.

***

On a similar, yet entirely different note, many people have used resin epoxy to build tables and countertops. No napkins or decoupage, but lots of interesting results. Here is a quick introduction:

Has anyone made their own epoxy resin projects?

How about a chess board?

The concept is infinitely customizable.

***

Bet you have seen resin charcuterie boards at craft fairs. Wonder how they are made or how difficult it is to make them? Wonder no more.

I still have some decoupage items that we received as gifts in college and for our wedding. I suppose they are vintage now...

Decoupage is a great way to dress up a simple box with a photo or drawing. Or a verse from a greeting card.

13 Afternoon shading into evening, all,

Isn't epoxy resin a substance used to make figure models, like a figurine of Vampirella, the Alien from that franchise, or the Frankenstein monster? I see them all the time on hobby shop sites. They often come in much larger scales than the old Aurora/Pyro figure kits did. They seem to have many fewer parts than those kits used to; to make up for that, they are molded in more detail.

I'm curious. What kind of glue can you use on those?

Some are, but many show the unpainted kit and its parts. You need to assemble them as well as paint the figure.

20 Many if not most of us have done decoupage (not called that) as kids. Cutting out snowflakes and gluing to construction paper or similar holiday themed items probably qualifies on a basic level. I tried once as an adult. Learned I needed to work on my motor skills. But the process of choosing the elements to include and arranging them was similar to setting up a still life for photography. I always enjoyed doing that.

Last summer I sanded all the surfaces to within an inch of their lives, oiled the legs, then epoxied the top. One area needed some redoing, so it got a second coat.

In my model-building days, enamels ("Pactra 'Namel" and Testors) were pretty much all we had. I repurposed some oil paints from my paint-by-number Dracula set for plastic models. They were fine, but took forever to dry.

Testors is still around, I think, and my local big hobby shop has Tamiya paints especially intended for the military modeler.

AMT offered a range of lacquer spray paints in cans for use with their 1/25 scale model cars. Pactra and Testors had enamel ones in a wide range of colors.

41 Sorta theme related. Looking up about decoupage I came across some videos on paper cutting. Instead of using bits of paper images and arranging them, a single sheet is incised with patterns using scissors and X-acto knives then placed against a background that emphasizes the pattern. Some are as simple as the previously mentioned snowflakes but others are incredibly complex and delicate, even ethereal. Given the skill, touch, and imagination involved, they are true works of art.

53 TRex,
Thanks for the videos in the post. Mostly things new to me. It did make me think about how people seem to have a desire to decorate things in their lives. Chip carving borders on everyday items using only a knife that was always carried, scroll work on wood and metal for traditional black powder guns that had no effect on their utility, silhouette profiles of loved ones cut from paper and placed under glass long before photography was available. There are stories that pioneer wives living in cabins with dirt floors would trace patterns in the compacted dirt with a stick if visitors were coming. Just to make things 'special. Lack of resources doesn't eliminate the urge.

69 When life (or the weather) gives you lemons, make lemonade.

With a lot of the country having an especially nasty winter, the muzzleloading forum I read has a big section on other aspects of the hobby. Making simple but useful items like loading blocks from scrap wood, powder measures from antler tips or pan chargers from bigger sections of antler. There are discussions about the best thread to use for sewing leather, how to weave a strap for a shooting bag, even recipes to try when camping becomes safer and more comfortable. It's nice to see that the weather isn't stopping the interest in outdoor hobbies.

It has news feed, stock ticker, stock news, calendar and control page for various things like Roku, lights , tv controls, etc.

It’s pretty impressive if I say so myself, especially the UI aspects as I generally hate working on UIs.
