Edible Gardening/Putting Things By Hi Katy, I hope all is well....Spring is "springing" in the PNW. Already 60 degree days in Feb. I hope no surprises as the hazelnut nut trees are blooming and pollen is flying...more later.WOW. Very impressive that you can grow citrus in the Northwest! Oro Blanco is a cross between a grapefruit and a pomelo. It is also grown outdoors in areas without enough summer heat to grow regular grapefruit. We get a little too much winter cold where we are, but it is grown in some nearby foothill areas. Oro Blanco ![]() ![]() Nice video of growing lemons . . . ![]() ![]() If you would like to send photos, stories, links, etc. for the Saturday Gardening Thread, the address is: ktinthegarden at g mail dot com Remember to include the nic or name by which you wish to be known at AoSHQ, or let us know if you want to remain a lurker. Happy Saturday! Almost feels like Spring today, but I know it's going to freeze again.

From Boise area: lows 27-36 F, highs 48-55. Air stagnation advisory this week, due to end with probable rain Sun. night.
It's been warm enough to do garden work. Our 6 main beds are weeded, and dead mushy tomatoes have been composted. Bunchgrasses got cut down. Tulip, crocus/hyacinth, forsythia, and mini-day-lily areas were weeded too. Husband built braces for some apple tree branches, and we placed them. The barn cat's automatic feeder was forcibly dis-assembled this week. Husband re-assembled it, and put a big flat rock atop it, then set out the trail camera - we spotted the raccoon culprit. Anyone have experience with a safe live trap, particularly how to know right at the moment it's set off? - if we trap our cat, we'll take him to the vet next morning for a checkup. If we trap the raccoon... it will not go well for that marauder. Posted by: Pat* at February 07, 2026 01:36 PM (N9LdK) 5
Got the remains of my greenhouse cleaned up. I'll never do that again unless it's on a foundation and built right. No overpriced out of a box greenhouses again.
In it's defense it did survive for about 3 years with many a duct tape bandaid. First real winds from the wrong direction and it bent to shit, blew out and broke a bunch of panels. Now there is no evidence it ever existed. Dug up some volunteer garlic bulbs and filled one corner of the garden. The deer seem to avoid garlic and onions so I can grow those. It looks like everything thinks it's spring already. Tulips are breaking the surface all over the yard. Supposed to snow... eventually. Posted by: Reforger at February 07, 2026 01:44 PM (J/fgw) 6
A bright sunny day has me cutting, dragging, and burning.

I've got to stick some bushes in the ground before the weather warms up too much. That's a good project for maybe next weekend.

AND I caught the neighbors cat eating my feral kitty food. Little shit seems to really like the cheap stuff. She's a sweetheart, so I let it slide but I put that out for less fortunate kittys. She should go home and eat.

Posted by: toby928(c) at February 07, 2026 01:44 PM (lQzuA) Yeah. I bought and with it came at least 8 hours per week doing some form of yard work. It was like buying a piss poorly paying part time job. Posted by: Reforger at February 07, 2026 01:58 PM (J/fgw) 11

We have some unseasonable warm temperatures here too. I have talked about planting some cold weather hardy seeds and I think it's time. We can still get snow and freezing temps but I have lots of seed.
And since the female kitten showed up, I'm pretty sure I've seen all the tom cats in the neighborhood. Some definitely have homes so I have cut back on the food I put out. She goes in to be spayed on Tuesday, which should help. Posted by: Notsothoreau at February 07, 2026 02:45 PM (+mUZM) 17
