THE MORNING RANT: More Disturbing Slavery Re-Normalization; Remember to Watch Turning Point’s Super Bowl Halftime Show
A subject I keep focusing on is the disturbing re-normalization of slavery in 21st century forms. The left believes there is virtue in allowing foreign nationals to be brought to the US to work off-the-books at below market wages. Meanwhile, the corporate right’s war on labor expense has it seeking to replace US citizens with that same non-American labor pool.
As I wrote recently at The American Spectator, ”Slavery under any name and under any circumstance is a great evil. Neither left-wing ‘compassion’ nor right-wing ‘free enterprise’ can provide an excuse for it to persist in any form in this country, nor in the supply chain of goods that are coming into the U.S.” However, both the “pro-immigrant” left and the “libertarian” right keep trying to excuse modern forms of slavery. TV station NBC 10 in Boston interviewed an AWFL named Lisa who boasted of the Haitian refugees whom she hadThis is great! She could maybe take in another one and they would be a maid for her! Then she could take in a few more and they’d farm for her… maybe grow a crop that they could pick.

On the right, or wherever Rand Paul is, the Kentucky Senator has introduced legislation ending welfare for non-citizens, which is a good thing. However, Senator Paul has also argued for years that illegal immigrants should be able to stay in the U.S. so long as they are working. Noah Wall cleverly points out that advocating for cheap, foreign labor that does not have the benefits of citizenship has a disturbing ring to it, stating on X/Twitter ”So we want a class of people who we can pay less and not give any benefits to and treat them however we want? I thought we decided that was a bad idea.”

Eliminating “the peculiar institution” in this country was a bloody ordeal that almost ended the United States. It cannot be re-introduced in a “compassionate” 21st-century form.
At the community level, I saw my family’s longtime Presbyterian Church go from a well-maintained facility that was buzzing with activity to a neglected building with grounds in disrepair. The left-wing politics coming from the pulpit drove out the parishioners who had served as in-the-trenches volunteers. In days gone by, the men of the church would bring their tools to fix potholes, replace lighting ballasts, remove fallen branches, etc. They’re all gone. Something similar has happened at my church because the DC suburbs simply grew out to the church. The area was semi-rural and the congregation was largely blue collar and military when I joined 40 years ago, but is now largely subdivisions and white collar. There is a real difference in the skill sets of the parishioners.

If we call it straight, putting an end to the "peculiar institution" was not an American effort, it swept like a wave across the entire English-speaking world. We had our extremely bloody battles, Britain had her less-bloody battles and the rest of Europe - though nowhere else, other than through the various European empires - grudgingly fell into line.
Institutionalized slavery of various forms is the *norm* throughout human history. Only the most civilized, industrious and moral people - that is, the English-speaking peoples - ever successfully overcame it.

So, we had a Mini March For Life last weekend that met at a Catholic Church right down the street from Planned Parenthood. We couldn't go into the church and heard that the church was now Closed.

Because it, like many institutions, wasn't actually a going concern. It depended on handouts (in this example, from its parishioners, who were happy to pay).
The smaller the institution, the more obvious the breakdowns associated with alienation. The local church goes to pot when it alienates its parishioners. The local social club collapses and closes down when it fails to provide any social benefit (and therefore, fails to attract or retain membership).
The larger the institution - and the fewer alternatives - the more subtle the decay is. There are more people to shoulder the burden of decay, and fewer options for the alienated.

Buck has a point that illegals are slave adjacent. I think on a broader view, it is an attempt to stratify society and that continues in many more subtle ways. Most immigration is about pushing down the lower and middle classes so that those already well established can feel higher. (why raise the bridge when you can lower the water.)
The beauty of it is that the costs (education, healthcare, benefits, security, qual. of life) are socialized so the lower classes pay through taxes for the programs and immigrants used to keep them down. They are doing what they accuse the "capitalists" of doing.

No, they aren't, and honest indentures should be legal. Determining what is "honest" is, admittedly, a tough nut to crack, though.
There did used to be a modified form of indentures, for higher education. Corporation pays your way (usually for grad schools in one of the hard sciences), and in exchange, you agree to a post-education employment commitment with the corporation for some number of years at a discounted rate. The apprenticeship system was also often a similar pseudo-indenture - you provide a discount in exchange for training.

There did used to be a modified form of indentures, for higher education. Corporation pays your way (usually for grad schools in one of the hard sciences), and in exchange, you agree to a post-education employment commitment with the corporation for some number of years at a discounted rate. The apprenticeship system was also often a similar pseudo-indenture - you provide a discount in exchange for training.

Indenture has some term, or a condition, or something like that. Some limit. Pay off your debt, complete the terms, whatever they are, and you're done. Also, no one tells you where you must live, or who you must marry, or if you get to keep any kids you might have. No one "owns" you as a person, you only have a contractual labor arrangement (that may or may not be voluntary).

I knew of an IT consulting company that did this. They did a bootstrap type training. 6 months I think. Then after graduation it was a 2 year commitment to stay with the company or pay back a prorated portion of the training cost.

I think the definitions changed but the essential differences between the classes stayed the same and even deepened as time went by.

I haven't attended a game, and only watched part of the final game in the '23 Series to see the Rangers finally win one, though I honestly didn't much care. I haven't watched an inning since.

Regarding Rand Paul: Years ago I read a few articles about how Germany decades ago brought in a lot of Turkish guest workers but provided them no pathway to citizenship. This was probably long enough ago that Little Green Footballs was still worth reading. At that point, the grandchildren of those original guest workers were still living in Germany, but not German, and they seemed to be the first ones embracing Islamism. Haven't heard any mention of it in a very long time but I doubt the problem was ever resolved

Someone pointed out (cannot remember who) that shows like the Simpsons and South Park used to be written by people who watched and knew human experience and life, and reacted to it with wit and humor. Now its people who watched the Simpsons and South Park writing episodes based on old episodes.

John Ringo recently posted that if you live among college grads and socialist theater kids who have no real experience other than being discontented and lots of indoctrination, it is impossible to write anything realistic or fun. Personally It think the whole concept of "only listen to people who agree fully with you" is also responsible, the whole ideological-borg destroys creativity

The only reason the S. Koreans put up with it (not all of them do, of course) is because one generation ago they were living in rural towns with no comforts. So they think they have it made.
But they have given up everything for salary and job and comforts. This works as long as Samsung and LG and the rest are growing and not firing. When they start to fire people (if they eve do) there will be revolution. S. Korea is on a really bad path.

They are held in debt to the universities and the feds.
If you want to let that go, let the debt be dischargeable in Banko. Make terms if you want (for example force them to file single no-deductions for 5 years or something and garnish their tax refunds) but LET THEM DISCHARGE THE DEBT

A foundational principle of contract law is that the law has to be tailored and interpreted to facilitate the practice. It serves no purpose to create a regulation or condition that immediately makes the activity unworkable.
If the debt is dischargeable, then everyone will declare bankruptcy upon graduation and dishcharge it, then no one will grant any loans because they will be uncollectible.
Granting the relief of "discharge" will also grant the relief of having the debt, or getting the loan, or going to college.
It is more complicated, but this is the logic behind what we have now. The problem is that millions were befuddled into taking on massive debt for a 4-6 year resort holiday that has no payback. How the heck did that happen? And who should pay for their foolishness -- the plumber? The pensioner? The HS dropout?

In re running off the normies and institutions failing: I see that out on the hiking trails. In many parts of the country, the hiking trails receive a significant fraction of the total upkeep from volunteers. I've watched over the last decade as many a long tenured volunteer has departed, fed up with the DEI nonsense. The non-profit orgs are trying to recruit from demographics that simply have neither the time nor the inclination to volunteer. The flat out say they have too many old white guys (the prime volunteer demographic). It's almost the old game of the government staffer - intentionally fail so you can get a larger budget.
