Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: More Disturbing Slavery Re-Normalization; Remember to Watch Turning Point’s Super Bowl Halftime ShowA subject I keep focusing on is the disturbing re-normalization of slavery in 21st century forms. The left believes there is virtue in allowing foreign nationals to be brought to the US to work off-the-books at below market wages. Meanwhile, the corporate right’s war on labor expense has it seeking to replace US citizens with that same non-American labor pool. As I wrote recently at The American Spectator, ”Slavery under any name and under any circumstance is a great evil. Neither left-wing ‘compassion’ nor right-wing ‘free enterprise’ can provide an excuse for it to persist in any form in this country, nor in the supply chain of goods that are coming into the U.S.” However, both the “pro-immigrant” left and the “libertarian” right keep trying to excuse modern forms of slavery. TV station NBC 10 in Boston interviewed an AWFL named Lisa who boasted of the Haitian refugees whom she had
On the right, or wherever Rand Paul is, the Kentucky Senator has introduced legislation ending welfare for non-citizens, which is a good thing. However, Senator Paul has also argued for years that illegal immigrants should be able to stay in the U.S. so long as they are working. Noah Wall cleverly points out that advocating for cheap, foreign labor that does not have the benefits of citizenship has a disturbing ring to it, stating on X/Twitter ”So we want a class of people who we can pay less and not give any benefits to and treat them however we want? I thought we decided that was a bad idea.”
Eliminating “the peculiar institution” in this country was a bloody ordeal that almost ended the United States. It cannot be re-introduced in a “compassionate” 21st-century form. At the community level, I saw my family’s longtime Presbyterian Church go from a well-maintained facility that was buzzing with activity to a neglected building with grounds in disrepair. The left-wing politics coming from the pulpit drove out the parishioners who had served as in-the-trenches volunteers. In days gone by, the men of the church would bring their tools to fix potholes, replace lighting ballasts, remove fallen branches, etc. They’re all gone. The rainbow-clad “clergy” took control of the church, but lost control of its upkeep. This piece is not behind a paywall. I’d be honored if you’d give it a read.

Rand Paul’s solution to illegal immigrants in the US: they get to stay but they don’t get welfare or citizenship.
There are times I really like RP, but it takes a special kind of stupid to think that the illegals won't be given citizenship by the left in an effort to stave off electoral oblivion and grab absolute power. The illegals are already getting welfare, and if you think the left's screeching is loud now, wait until little Jose and Maria aren't getting food stamps. Something similar has happened at my church because the DC suburbs simply grew out to the church. The area was semi-rural and the congregation was largely blue collar and military when I joined 40 years ago, but is now largely subdivisions and white collar. ++++ It can be, has been and will likely continue. If we call it straight, putting an end to the "peculiar institution" was not an American effort, it swept like a wave across the entire English-speaking world. We had our extremely bloody battles, Britain had her less-bloody battles and the rest of Europe - though nowhere else, other than through the various European empires - grudgingly fell into line. Institutionalized slavery of various forms is the *norm* throughout human history. Only the most civilized, industrious and moral people - that is, the English-speaking peoples - ever successfully overcame it. As our civilization wanes, it is the most to-be-expected thing in the world for the "peculiar institution" to make a roaring comeback. Just like child sacrifice and aristocracy. Rand Paul suffers from weaponized empathy.
My grandmother fled Mussolini in 1939 and barely made it out of Italy with my dad, an infant at the time. When she and my grandfather came to America, they had to have sponsors, they had to learn English, and they had to prove that they would be productive citizens who could stand on their own two feet. My grandmother hated illegal aliens. And she was very quick to point out the difference between a legal migrant and an illegal alien. This is a distinction that has been deliberately muddied by the left, the media, and fools like Rand Paul. Posted by: Darth Chipmunk at February 06, 2026 11:14 AM (m0WlR) 31

++++ Because it, like many institutions, wasn't actually a going concern. It depended on handouts (in this example, from its parishioners, who were happy to pay). The smaller the institution, the more obvious the breakdowns associated with alienation. The local church goes to pot when it alienates its parishioners. The local social club collapses and closes down when it fails to provide any social benefit (and therefore, fails to attract or retain membership). The larger the institution - and the fewer alternatives - the more subtle the decay is. There are more people to shoulder the burden of decay, and fewer options for the alienated. Institutionalized slavery of various forms is the *norm* throughout human history.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) ------------ Buck has a point that illegals are slave adjacent. I think on a broader view, it is an attempt to stratify society and that continues in many more subtle ways. Most immigration is about pushing down the lower and middle classes so that those already well established can feel higher. (why raise the bridge when you can lower the water.) The beauty of it is that the costs (education, healthcare, benefits, security, qual. of life) are socialized so the lower classes pay through taxes for the programs and immigrants used to keep them down. They are doing what they accuse the "capitalists" of doing. This keys into why tribes of any form are poison to a free society -- the tribes will always try to stratify with their tribe on top. Posted by: Archimedes at February 06, 2026 11:22 AM (Riz8t) ++++ You can argue that for most of the indentured aliens in this country, it was voluntary. It usually was. The person goes to the cartel and negotiates for passage. The cartel provides passage El Norte on credit. The person remits part of his wages "back home to his family." The family pays back the local cartel man. If that fails, the cartel man starts murdering members of the family until the person resumes payments. That's grotesque, but it was also voluntary - or at least, it started that way before the brutal reality set in. But "contracts" like that are illegal. I think on a broader view, it is an attempt to stratify society and that continues in many more subtle ways.
The WEF, that glorious marketplace of globalist thought, has long envisioned a future comprised of aristocrats, commoners, and lessers - even if some will argue that aristocrat is the wrong word to use.
Posted by: Archimedes Well, this is Rand's idea today, so we won't "hurt people". I sort of get it, but the real world does not work this way. The comments on X following the video were almost universally "NO". And someday, when the Democrats are back in power, they will make these people citizens, with the corresponding voter impact. Posted by: LinusVanPelt Nah. Romo is the best. I wish FOX would get him for the Cowboy games. He gives the best explanations and I love it when he predicts a play even before it happens. One quibble: how many of those people in the lower classes still pay taxes. Thanks to W and others, the lower half pays almost nothing, at least in income taxes.
Posted by: Archimedes ------------- Well, mostly yes, but. Many don't pay any tax except the state sales tax. But we all pay the inflation tax, and I hold that that is one of the key taxes to keep lower and even middle classes down. It is a tax on savings and a boost to asset holders. (it gets more complicated to explain why middle class assets are taxed, but upper classes have enough to justify tax avoidance strategies.) There did used to be a modified form of indentures, for higher education. Corporation pays your way (usually for grad schools in one of the hard sciences), and in exchange, you agree to a post-education employment commitment with the corporation for some number of years at a discounted rate. The apprenticeship system was also often a similar pseudo-indenture - you provide a discount in exchange for training.

Posted by: Judge Elric The Blade Princess effect. Some people believe they deserve servants because of who they believe they are. And in their minds, they are always the hero of their own stories. Cinderella is an example of the dark folk tales where some people do not feel whole unless they have someone to order about and look down upon. The Southern Planters are an example where they wanted to recreate the British society of aristocrats lording over peasants in bondage. No American wanted much to be a peasant when land and other opportunities were freely available to make something of themselves so the planter class had to get a captive labor force that could not leave or breathe without the master's consent. And those planters saddled the US with the after effects since then. Just like the modern variety of human traffickers resemble slave traders and their clients resemble those Southern planters. Indenture has some term, or a condition, or something like that. Some limit. Pay off your debt, complete the terms, whatever they are, and you're done. Also, no one tells you where you must live, or who you must marry, or if you get to keep any kids you might have. No one "owns" you as a person, you only have a contractual labor arrangement (that may or may not be voluntary).
That's always been my understanding of the distinction. Posted by: Warai-otoko at February 06, 2026 11:46 AM (JwNbV) 168

The only difference is in one case you sign up for a fixed period of time, but otherwise know what conditions you'll live in, and in the other, you can leave when you want. Both cases involve a voluntary acceptance of the boundary conditions. Don't like the deal? Don't take it. As to being dependent on his whim for my physical well-being, I'm not sure what you mean. That's close to one a month, so let's call it 12 per year and be additionally generous. Most of these courses are an hour, some are thirty minutes. Let's continue our rounding and call it an hour each and assume it all comes out in the wash. 12 hours a year, per employee. 1.5 working days per *year*, at best, wasted. Per employee. And that assumes no policy changes (no degradation of the workforce), no alienation of current employees, no productivity consequences. The corporate standard work year is normalized to 2,000 hours. The above discussion is why I prefer to call out "stratification" and "tribalism."
Slavery is too complex. I feel that a form of slavery is going on in China and S. Korea, but it is voluntary and resulting in low birth rates. Serfdom is a form of slavery and in all slavery there has to be some freedom and we can argue all day about which freedoms kick it over the line to slavery. But stratification is anti-American. It is inherent in much of Europe, essential to Indian society, and what the open-border types crave. Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) at February 06, 2026 12:12 PM (k/oxk) 307
But they actually didn't. The first acts banned slavery in areas that really didn't have many, and left the other areas alone. It was a bit of theater, really
Yeah it was baby steps, if you watch the film Amazing Grace you get a sense how hard it was to even get that done. At least one of the princes under the insane King George was very heavily invested in slavery, as were many rich powerful people in England at the time. But eventually they banned it all everywhere, and even went so far as to actively go out and attack slave ships to free the slaves everywhere in the ocean. Initially though, it was like the French: banned slavery in France with the revolution... but left it in place in all their colonies. It's why "fresh blood" - that is, hiring from outside for some leadership positions - is actually a good idea. Funnily enough, though, DEI mania ensures conformity. It *maximizes* idiosyncratic risk - the very thing that "diversity is our strength," when understood correctly (which most people here *do*), is supposed to reduce. Leftist inversion. The libertarian argument fails completely.
As we've seen repeatedly people move somewhere and immediately give themselves government benefits if they are a discrete clannish group...and the 3rd world is inherently clannish. Now, if there wasn't a welfare state? Well the argument does get somewhat better (though it still has problems), but you will never ever get rid of the welfare state when you keep important foreign groups dependent on welfare. Nor does the corporate class like not having cheap labor or being able to send jobs abroad for a few extra bucks in investor earnings. Neither are particularly virtuous.
Posted by: whig at February 06, 2026 11:54 AM (2swu2) There is a term I have heard, "financialized capitalism" where the goal is to maximize income by all means possible. Leverage, outsourcing, various elements from mercantilism like captured markets and raw material sources, exporting jobs to cheap labor markets, and general enshittification of everything. This was held in opposition to the more Hamiltonian American System which is focused on maximizing production for consumption, and does not rely on anyone getting rich being the middleman or rentier. The argument was that Trump was pushing to an American system in opposition to the financialized system that has been hollowing out the world for the last 80 years. It might be a good way to handle young people with six figures of college debt. Posted by: NR Pax at February 06, 2026 12:06 PM (svLOV) The only reason they have to struggle with that debt as opposed to any other debt is that it is impossible to discharge that debt via bankruptcy. (for example force them to file single no-deductions for 5 years or something and garnish their tax refunds) but LET THEM DISCHARGE THE DEBT
Posted by: Kindltot ------------ A foundational principle of contract law is that the law has to be tailored and interpreted to facilitate the practice. It serves no purpose to create a regulation or condition that immediately makes the activity unworkable. If the debt is dischargeable, then everyone will declare bankruptcy upon graduation and dishcharge it, then no one will grant any loans because they will be uncollectible. Granting the relief of "discharge" will also grant the relief of having the debt, or getting the loan, or going to college. It is more complicated, but this is the logic behind what we have now. The problem is that millions were befuddled into taking on massive debt for a 4-6 year resort holiday that has no payback. How the heck did that happen? And who should pay for their foolishness -- the plumber? The pensioner? The HS dropout? Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) at February 06, 2026 12:52 PM (k/oxk) 354
