First World Problems...

icicle26.jpg

Those are just a bit too high for my ladder, and of course my goal is to harvest them for cocktails!

Seriously...I don't think there is a problem with ice damming. The roof above is right next to a steam radiator, and I think there is enough radiant heat to get a bit of melting.

And they look really good!

Sometimes, in some places (not where you are) the temperature actually varies by more than a 20 degree range.

The ambient temperature in these places can actually get BELOW the melting point of H2O. It then becomes solid on a widespread scale.

24 My FWP was earlier in the week. My tractor was literally frozen to the ground. It sits next to my garage on a gravel pad. The storm the weather nuts named "Fern" dumped about 7 inches of snow and ice on us. The wind did the rest, drifting around the tractor and encasing it in ice.

Took two hours of gentle picking at the ice so as to not damage anything before I could free it. In temps around 17F. With the wind blowing.

It sucked.

48 I have a First World Problem that is 100% serious. I have a bunch of recessed can lights in my office. They have BR40 LED flood bulbs installed. The bulbs have been there a few years and are starting to fail, because LED bulbs that are supposed to last 22 years actually die after three or four years if you're lucky, because they're cheap crap from China, where, in case you haven't been paying attention, they make nothing but cheap crap that fails prematurely.

My specific First World Problem is that I can no longer get bulbs that match the ones I originally used. The branding means nothing, what you get is whatever cheap Chinese crap is cheapest this month, and bulbs I buy today are different than the ones I bought a few years ago, in terms of physical appearance, brightness and light color. These things are important to a person of OCD such as myself.

I'm facing the choice between replacing the dead ones and living with mismatched bulbs, or buying all new matching bulbs and throwing away the remaining working bulbs, or doing nothing, while sitting and cursing the darkness as the remaining bulbs slowly die, one by one.

The solution is to come up with several pleasing patterns for two different bulb styles, and work through them as you go from "all current bulbs" to "all new bulbs".

Halfway through you'll have a chessboard pattern.

63 I remember when the power went out in Louisville during an ice storm for about a week. Below zero outside, but the apartment was pretty well insulated. Did not open the exterior door much and only lost about 10 degrees per day. This was before Ajax.

Went home for the day to take a shower and warm up after about four days. Heard power was coming back on in Louisville, so I went back.

When I got there, the power must have just come back on. Bitterly cold inside, but the lights on. Turned on the TV and watched TV while the heater ran and in my parka. It is weird to be inside your house with the power on, but your breath fogging in front of you.

As things warmed up (took a couple hours) the walls, plastic everything started popping. That was weird too.

Yes, they will burn out in 3-4 years, but at the same rate, and they will be approximately the same color as they age.

By the way, I have had good luck with their brand. I have BR40s all over the house, and the kitchen ones stay on 10-12 hours a day. They last about four years!

I'll probably do something like that. We have several rooms with can lights, with different numbers of cans in different rooms. I've considered shuffling the surviving bulbs to a different room, with fewer cans, but that involves a lot of ladder climbing, and once they start dying, the survivors probably won't last long.

Eastern Ice is the big ice company around here. The original business started in the early 1900s largely to supply the fishing fleet. That's what they did in the early day, harvested the ice from local ponds and lakes.

92 Installed a hunter fan a few weeks back. Same model for each of my kids rooms. Not a fixed post but one of those ball joints hanger models. Small at 44 inches....my sons runs quiet even at higher speeds....but my daughters has developed a higher pitch huuuummmmm that's especially bothersome at the highest speed. I can get it quiet but pushing up and getting the ball out of the socket....so probably a resonance/isolation issue but who knows! Funny thing is she sleeps just fine with it.

So now I get to take it apart and put it back together again.

For the record ...it was cheap but it was either the 44 inch fan blade model or the 52 inch (too big for the room) that allowed me to get the iced glass lightbulb housing and not the eye blinding exposed singular glass encased bulb housing .

Whatever

94 I have a bunch of recessed can lights in my office.

I have a related problem. My ceiling is too high to easily reach the can lights so I use a stick with a suction cup on the end from Amazon to change them. (There's a pull string that lifts a corner of the cup away from the bulb to break the seal when you're putting a bulb back in). Unfortunately, because cheap Chinese crap, the bulbs tend to separate from the base when unscrewing them, leaving the metal base screwed into the socket 12+ feet in the air and the rest of the bulb in my hands.

There are a ton of suggestions online for fixing this, including using a wooden handled broom to unscrew the base, and none of them have worked thus far.

Thats our method. We have a bulb stockroom in the basement from changing everything every time we lose a bulb somewhere because the new ones are never the same. Lose a bulb in the bedroom, oh can't get that one anymore, well just change them all. Move the spares into the basement where they get cataloged, where they came from, new or used, what room they'll work in, etc. Had to deal with the kitchen last week. Changed them all, the ones we took out are the same in the bedroom, so they get marked bedroom spares. Because you got daylight, soft white, bright white, etc, it makes things even more interesting.

The snow blew in through the ridge vents, apparently, which do not have ridge vent protectors (construction firms this far south don't put them on your roof because "Gawrsh, Mickey, it ain't never gonna snow here!"). I had the same problem. My fix was a little giant ladder. It goes stupid high and is the most stable feeling ladder I ever climbed on, like walking up stairs. The down side its a heavy bastard. If you're going to use a broom hand and its too small you can wind duct tape around the end, but sticky side out, then go down a few inches and wind more sticky side in to secure the first wrapping. It will fit snug in the socket and the glue side grabs the base and don't slip.

146 105 Thats our method. ....... what room they'll work in, etc. Had to deal with the kitchen last week. Changed them all, the ones we took out are the same in the bedroom, so they get marked bedroom spares. Because you got daylight, soft white, bright white, etc, it makes things even more interesting.

I had a similar problem with an early '80's Volvo sedan. It had a 'bulb out' lamp would come on if a headlight, taillight, etc went out. If you changed out one headlight, the lamp would stay on. It was because the lamp out module used a reed switch with the two bulb wires wrapped around it, for each set of lamps. If one lamp went out, the imbalance in the magnetic field caused the reed switch to close. But....but ...but a new bulb had a sufficiently different current draw that it closed the switch so you had to usually swap out both lamps....

149 I had a dream last night that the Horde might find amusing. I had finished lunch in a campus cafeteria and for some reason we all had to wait for awhile before we could leave. We were standing near one of the walls of the cafeteria. I was tired, so I had bundled my coat in my arms in such a way that I could relax without dropping it and was leaning against the wall with my eyes closed and sort of napping while standing. When I opened my eyes, Kamala Harris was standing next to me and looking intently at my coat bundle like something was bothering her. I asked if something was wrong and she said, "You're not allowed to have alcohol on campus," like she thought I was hiding something in my coat.

Now that I've typed all that out, I guess it's not that funny. But it's kind of unusual to be reprimanded by Kamala about alcohol.

156 My FWP for today is the sprayer for my kitchen faucet got stuck in the "ON" position, and I had to turn it off and tap on it to get it to open. This is not the first time I have had to replace one, as in my experience they don't get better. The pressed-together injection-molded guts get clogged with lime scale, and can't be economically cleaned.

I had to go to Walmart anyway, where I'll pick up a cheap replacement, which will get clogged with lime scale too in a couple of years.

Anybody have experience with a higher grade model, that can be cleaned and rebuilt?

Try touching your face. That is where the oil comes from that is left behind, that detectives lift fingerprints from. (Trivia: this is why they have half the time to collect evidence in cases of abducted children, because their facial oils are lighter -- witness the lack of acne -- and evaporate quicker.) So, if I washed my hands a lot and I'm having trouble picking up seeds or separating slips of paper, I rub the oiliest parts of my face. It works for traction, so maybe it would work for imaging?

In bitter apple sprays, vinegar is the solvent/carrier, not the actual repellent. That would be something like berberine or the plant from which it derives, and there are other, probably proprietary, ingredients added to enhance the bitter taste. I would not experiment with trying to add those myself; the actual spray is not that expensive and is available on sites like Chewy and Amazon.

196 @ 48 I have a First World Problem that is 100% serious.

… These things are important to a person of OCD such as myself.
… … …

I'm facing the choice between replacing the dead ones … or buying all new matching bulbs … or doing nothing, while sitting and cursing the darkness as the remaining bulbs slowly die, one by one.

_______________________________________

I am SO happy I bought cases of the old incan GE bulbs from W'mart when they were still on-shelf before the Philly mfg plant closed. That's when the 'new & improved' bulbs were replacing 'em. Incans Rule! LEDs suck. 5,200°F light is good light!

Take it to a local gunshop that will sell it on consignment for you. Do not sell it outright at a pawn shop, as even an honest shop can only give you a fraction of its value.

Selling on consignment means you get less money than a face-to-face sale, but it also keeps you out of trouble.

Yes, he has yak chews, he has olive wood chews. He chews those all the time. Now that he has been told no, which was an entire affront to his being, he only does it when we are gone. I may wrap that leg in foil, he is skittish so the noise or just its presence may be a good deterrent.

If you get an answer on exchanging those pointy bulbs too high to reach let me know.
I have three sconces in my stairwell far too high above, all with skinny pointy bulbs. My only answer has been construction scaffolding and that's too much.

BAD BUNNY is just the symptom, the tip of the bad adviceberg.

LIBs are all Smiles because they know that the countdown continues and they will do everything to distract you from the clear, the Obvious and (their) INEVITABLE inthe next two weeks: forWAR'd or (quite possibly) fORelse.

Why? $12Trillion for peace, yes, (equivalent to 12000 points on the DOW). yes, peace, not just in Ukraine, but for Gaz and Beyond -- and still that's not enough. Events to watch Florida/MaraLago+Miami next weekend and then the first meeting of Board of Peace one week later.

LIB leadership are simply besides themselves, yes, they can co-exist, but only on their terms -- and only if that money goes into their pockets. Huma Abedin's demonic apotheosis is nothing compared to their simmering rage, who dare challenge their right to decide who must be sacrificed that 'they' may live?

What fresh hell the LIBs plan? is there anything beyond?
Guess we're gonna find out. only too soon.

That's similar to that short story, used for a show on Alfred hitchcock Presents.

It a wife bludgeons her husband to death with a leg of lamb and then cooks it as the police detectives meander about her house and in the end serves it to them for dinner.

So...there you go. There's your perfect murder.

I'm not sure I believe the dick-injecting stories because it makes no sense. You can get a larger suit by injecting your dick, making it incrementally bigger, and somehow that gives you a bigger suit which in turn gives you an advantage in flight? Seems like bullshit to me. But who knows?

244 235 Emmie, I agree with you. President Trump is giving his life fighting for what is right for our country. We will not see another like him.

How true. And precisely why the LIBs are all-in, right now, to defeat/despose/impugn him before he can preside over the America250/July 4th proceedings, why Kiev/Peace by June30 is not optional. Why these next two weeks will determine the course for the rest of the century -- yeah, mouthy LIBs carping, not just for your cheesecake

LIBs intend to take away your virtue, and then your very life, and then send you a bill for it

Imagine all that ctHARRIS's America250/July lust for. LIBs believe that's still possible, and this final superbowl is a kickoff to their season finale set their terms, moral bankrupcy, depravity, not only open sponsorship of our adversaries, but actively defending them as weel. -- yes, we can coexist with LIBs, only on their terms. WAR. forever WAR to pit man against other men until we exist no more

A war on normal people, punctuated by the upcoming testimonies of both Clinton's, the bonfire of their moral corruptions, epstein, maxwell, brennan and all the others who knowing stood by. Time to clean house, now or never
