Daily Tech News 4 February 2026

Top Story

  • How it started: Europe shrugs off tariffs and plans to end its complete reliance on America for all its technology. (The Register)

    Except for ASML, anyway.
Forrester frames much of this as a sovereignty play, and it is hard to argue otherwise. Across Europe, money is going into sovereign cloud platforms, AI-ready infrastructure, and tighter rules on where data lives and who can access it.
This is not a privacy question. It is a control question.

  • How it's going: Amazon is finding that Europe is not exactly a powerhouse when it comes to, well, power. (The Register)
AWS has moved quickly to flood the European continent with its elastic compute fabric, but while it may take two years to bring a new datacenter online, securing power for the facilities can take up to seven years, Pamela MacDougall, who heads energy markets and regulation for AWS EMEA, said in an interview with Reuters this week.
I can fit you in at 2PM on the eleventh of Never.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), in some European datacenter meccas, like Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin, this wait can extend to as much as a decade.
I'm not sure this is going to work as you planned, guys.

379 I replaced my burned out 30 year old electric coil Jenn Air stovetop with a budget glass top.

I have a set of cheap cheap Wally World aluminum Teflon pots and pans with shiny bottoms.

40 min. on high, stock pot had reached 195, barely boiling. Spray Painted the bottom black with some high heat automotive paint.

13 minutes to a full rolling boil.

I have video.

The problem is shiny reflective metal bottoms REFLECTING the radiant heat. 10 buck can of flat black exhaust manifold paint for the whole set, and Bob's My Uncle.

25 Andrew Windsor, formerly known as Prince, moved out of his house last night, and now lives in a house his brother leant to him at another location.

The former prince, 65, had hoped to stay at Royal Lodge, his Windsor home of decades, for longer, the Sun newspaper said, but he was moved under the cover of darkness on Monday and driven to a cottage in Sandringham, the king's Norfolk estate.

No American has been punished at all, except for maybe Jesse Staley. But Bill Clinton or Gates? Bill Richardson is dead, so they can't go after him. Larry Summers is laying low. Leon Black and Josh Harris are similarly staying away from the news.

47 After an offseason of training, Vonn — whose 84 career World Cup wins are third on the career list, behind only American Mikaela Shiffrin (10 and Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark (86) — has been stellar this season. Vonn has won two downhills, including the season opener in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and has finished in the top four in all eight of her completed World Cup races. If she’s able to compete, she’ll be a gold-medal contender across all three of her Olympic events.

52 Local school district voters turned down the latest vote (keep voting until it passes) to get two electric school buses from the state at a reduced price. One bus 3X more than a diesel bus. What to do, the NYS mandate is real and likely the state will say buy EV or else. Huge number of voters say no. But a mandate is a mandate and Kathy Hochul says all buses must be EV by 2035 come hell or high water. We must save the planet starting now, cold now but the future will bring hot temp even in the winter, so the say. Power for the buses pixie dust.

Both cats love to go into the closets while I have the door open, and they have never learned they can get shut in when their manservant doesn't notice. I try to check on them before I leave the house or go to bed. But last night I missed. He didn't do any damage, and I'll feed them a little early, so I guess it's no problem.

85 Times of grace yesterday, or what nice thing God showed me yesterday:

There was a nice ,young ( well, young to me, maybe late 30's ?) with her two girls who were 3 and 5 in the coffee shop. They were adorable and smiling . One was making a snow man with play doh. For some reason she thought I could blow up balloons. It made me laugh. The mother also had two little boys in school/ one so not there. They are 10 and 11. She is doing her part to help the population.

Had a lovely Bible study at the senior center.

And finally, I had a laugh when I went out for.a burger. There was a man there with his siding crew and I asked if he could twist the cap off my iced tea He said, "My wife loves me for doing this for her ." I said, "Sir, I'm sure your wife loves you for many other reasons than that, but this is a nice quality husbands have." He laughed. It's good to laugh.

Wolfus, I don't know about my intellect, ( not as sharp as I used to be) but my typing skills and speed stink.

Fen, I doubt that about your intellect. But remember: Enthusiasm counts!

96 Thanks, Wolfus. Enthusiasm I mostly have, and I hate typing on whatever the new lap top keyboard is that is flat. That makes it even harder to type, so I mostly type on the phone for ASHQ.

97 Last night I saw a PSA for the American Heart Association (I think it was) with Amy Grant, who was a star in the '90s in the contemporary Christian music scene. She tells us of her heart surgery and urges us to get tested. She did not look like the '90s Amy Grant . . . but she looked absolutely fantastic. Would that we could all age as well.

He seems utterly unfazed by it all. He ate his breakfast with the zest you'd expect, as always, and has curled atop the back of the sofa with me, as he often does.

Both cats have gotten themselves locked up for a couple hours at a time, and neither seems to hate me.

108 Over the last eight years New Jersey has (forcibly) retired more than 1.5 GW of electrical generation capacity from seven plants, because NG, coal, and nuclear are evil and bad. But that's OK, because electricity is now being magicked, which is a much cleaner generation method.

111 I look at the Food Lion ad online and stock up when stuff is on sale. Pork loin was $1.99 last week. Chuck roast was $5.99. Chicken thighs were $0.99 .

Pay attention to what is "on sale" and stock up.
