Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani; and he said to his disciples: Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray. And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad. Then he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with me.

And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying, and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

And he cometh to his disciples, and findeth them asleep, and he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me? Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.

Again the second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done. And he cometh again and findeth them sleeping: for their eyes were heavy. And leaving them, he went again: and he prayed the third time, saying the selfsame word.

76 For something painted in the early 1500s, this has a 20th century feel: Basic distinct colors, simple poses, even the flowers in the foreground look like some modern simplification of plants. None of the over the top subtle techniques of painting that might have been usual in later centuries. The story provides the power of the moment for the viewer. Although it isn't a huge part of the image, the expression on Christ's face is the key. The usual word, as in the title, is agony. I think this moment is about His acceptance of what must be, painful as it is, and that is perhaps harder to endure.

My comments on the art thread show my immediate reaction. I wonder what I would say if I studied the painting for a few days.

The National Gallery Org UK

(In part) This painting was once thought to be by the young Raphael but is now attributed to Lo Spagna, another pupil of Perugino. It is based largely on Perugino’s Agony in the Garden (Uffizi, Florence) which was painted in the 1490s. At this time, artists used various techniques for designing pictures, including transferring figures from cartoons (full size and usually detailed preparations on paper for a painting). Fragments of a pricked cartoon for the four principal figures here are also in the Uffizi.

Full title - The Agony in the Garden
Artist - Probably by Lo Spagna
Artist dates - Active 1504, died 1528
Date made - Perhaps 1500-5
Medium and support - Oil on wood

Enjoy looking at this painting but probably wouldn't hang it.

Thank you.

Send money now to defeat the Democrats!, We have to have mass amnesty because the public hates meanies, Trump is failing so tariffs have to go, etc. etc.

Tom Servo laid out the oddity of this special election. The main useful bits are that having a special election on Saturday in a very cold and nasty winter attracted minimal voters. The second is that this election would have not be necessary had the Democrats not ran a fake GOP candidate to split the vote so that a runoff was necessary.

Why does our own side just freak out about a completely meaningless special election (I mean completely...the guy isn't even going to ever cast a vote from that TX special election) but ignore others that are positive?

Don't get me wrong...special elections are not predictive of the next general election. They simply are not. You can't get meaningful information from a 15% turnout election to predict a 67% turnout election (or, sometimes, 85%). The electorates are simply different. That 15% isn't a random sample of the larger electorate. It's not predictive.

I'm interested in the narrative creation...especially from the right. The left touting a D overperformance makes sense. The right ignoring R overperformance? Why?

180 The right ignoring R overperformance? Why?
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

Doesn't fit agendas of Conservative Media TM as I explained above.

A) Doomer media is a kink for Conservative Media
B) Everyone knows that state GOP parties are in effect dog shit incompetent if not maliciously incompetent.
C) The issues crowd that wants their issue to the fore being a cause of the loss--deportations, tariffs, interest rates, national defense, the SAVE act, etc. etc. for the loss.
D) The audience out there expects the Washington Generals GOPe to appear in every election. They expect such losses, more so as their engagement with mass media increases.
E) Panicking people is a good way to shake the trees for campaign donations which accrue right now to the parties, not necessarily the individual candidates.
F) People that despise the GOP for its eternal flop act over the last 50 years or so.

Roses -- I have no idea because I am a moron and not an art historian

I think the trees might be young olive trees. I should know, as I have an olive tree 10 feet from where I sit, and I planted it as a sapling, but they still look kind of weird. I say young because they are very leggy when young, and it takes a few years to spread out. So young olive would fit the theme, overall.

There are similar parallels with the 1950s and recognition of communist subversion and the moslem threat.

They attack the messenger, and never the substance of the actual charges. Truman was a great guy in a lot of ways, but he had all the State Department personnel files, the loyalty and background checks sent to the White House and wouldn’t let anybody see them on the investigation committees. The F.B.I. had done their work very well, it was the enforcement part of the equation that fell apart.

The high propensity voters are now Democrats. That's just the world we live in.

Mitt Romney won us the high propensity voters but lost us the low propensity voters. Trump does the opposite.

Not even Obama's team could figure out how to turn low propensity voters into high ones (that's why they got blown out in the midterms, the low props didn't show up). Trump flipped that.

We either salve our wounds with the fact that Trump now controls immigration enforcement, or we have to dismantle the electorate that made that possible so we can win less important races.

The best we can do is try to turn low propensity voters into regular voters on an individual level.

The online narrative around her from the left once she announces is going to be vicious. Online, the left is very progressive and very white, the kind of people who think Beshear has a shot at the nomination.

However, once she sews it up, they'll all be back to loving the coconut memes because she's the most qualified candidate in history being VP for four years, unlike JD Vance who was only VP for four years.

248 I was thinking about something last night when falling asleep, a bit of a counterfactual.

The Iranian hostage crisis and associated antics were inexcusable, and Carter deserves the ridicule he gets for it. We also blame him for losing Iran in general, which he did.

But, what actually happened there?

1.) Our corrupt puppet commits too many excesses

2.) It engenders a revolt by Islamists

3.) Carter bails on the Shah; the Islamists win and become an intractable problem

So, not great.

But what if Step 3 were different, and Carter hadn't bailed on our client state, and backed its regime to the hilt, instead?

Because if you make that change, the progression sounds exactly like the run up to the Soviet disaster in Afghanistan.

Carter's pusillanimity may have spared us a great deal of heartache.

251 Democrats haven't won an election they didn't steal for generations.
——-

I’ve been saying for a while now - maybe Dewey really DID defeat Truman.

There is (or was) an ebb and flow to politics. Democrats had held the presidency for four (4) straight terms. For that reason alone, it’s a bit of a stretch. The electorate will simply say “let’s try the other guys for a while”. And then they remember why they hate the other guys, too. But the principle is a sound one.

To me it looks like the Democrats wanted to short circuit this natural ebb and flow, and prevent the Nixon Reagan style of wipeout.

Note well they no longer concern themselves with tacking to the center after a good shellacking, something last seen in the 1990s with Clinton. They don’t think they need to, and if they can steal elections, they are probably right. Very convenient, that.

252 As someone who has worked with state and local GOP parties in the past, they are a very insular group. You have the iron triangle of special interests reflected in donations, the campaign consultants, and the party executive directors.

If outsiders take over a local party operation, they find it stripped of any money and no ability to raise money nor operate. If they take over a state operation, then you get the same fight by insider GOPe types to subvert and destroy what they cannot control by lawfare and any other means.

Those interest groups shelling out money in state and local races expect to get their money's worth in access and legislation/contracts. The campaign consultants despise volunteers because they get very little compensation to manage them. Instead, they get a share of media ad placements, often own the robocall monstrosities, and get a chunk from mailers win or lose. Voter mobilization is the last thing on their mind--they still run the same campaigns as they did in the 00's.

Old story about Chicago's party system regarding volunteers--"We don't want nobody that nobody sent" (Abner Mikva).

254 I've always loved John Nolte's takes on film things, and he apparently agrees with me that Lupita will make a good Helen of Troy. She comes an elite Nigerian family and has a regal bearing. She'll do fine.

Britain has a long history of gender blind casting, especially in stage and theatre. Their take on Frankenstein had the new Moneypenny as Elizabeth and the actors that plays Kingsley Shacklebot as her dad.

If it was a documentary I'd be pissed, but Nolan's making a Greek fantasy. I'm still surprised that LGBT mafia hasn't canceled him over the trans actor Page being cast as a one eyed monster.

They also bear in mind that when Iger got replaced the first time, the new CEO got removed from office by daring to challenge Iger's and his yes men's ideas. Disney needs to cast its broadcast and declining cable properties off now to invest in its streaming, movies, and parks, but I don't know if the Iger yes men will allow that.

Disney also needs to can the woke bit for movies and parks and offer value again to families with children.

Elderly Disney adult groupies, perverts, and foreigners are probably going to be a declining market going forward. Sticking with those values is likely to not produce growth going forward. Once again, Iger's yes men inside the company are likely to try to remove a CEO that dares to move Disney that way.

The biggest singular issue with the teaching of a bunch of old stuff is that students are expected to read plays.

It'd be like teaching the movie Airplane! by reading the script and dissecting each joke as to why its funny instead of watching the film.

Death of a Salesman, while trying to be a social commentary on the times, does address that poignant issue of aging and longing for a past mythical time when anything seemed possible.

Something that might be of interest to you is trying to capture that lost halcyon days of youth in short stories about different events in your youth and understanding you as a youth in relation to you as now. If you have children, they might be interested in that in the future, but even if no one else is interested, you will have gotten to revisit your memories, good and bad of a past age inaccessible any other way.

My son's HS English class read the Odyssey. And then the teacher showed them "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," which is based on it. I thought that was pretty cool.

I can understand your point of view. Renaissance Man more or less dealt with that same topic. Probably DeVito's best film along with Other People's Money and Tin Men.

Zero Hour! was Airplane's script more or less without the added jokes.

335 I read that twice!

Joyce's stylistic meanderings are a heavy mask on the point of the narrative, but piercing it ends up worthwhile to a degree.

English majors only apply, though.

Finnegan's Wake, now...I tried. I really tried. I think I got 30 pages into it before I gave up.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

I found Churchill's A History of the English Speaking Peoples far more interesting than Joyce.

And a typical O Henry short story has more heart and humor than Joyce ever showed me.

Helpful tip: when playing that common bar game "name all of the Magnificent Seven actors", start with Brad Dexter, because that's the guy that everyone gets hung up on.

Funny thing though, when I consider Dexter's performances I always remember him as the American POW sergeant in Von Ryan's Express. Mainly because he's a fat guy playing a POW. He has to suck in his flabby gut even more than I do.

337 Interesting transitional work. Has qualities of Late Gothic story telling symbols from the gospel (the cup in the hand of the angel, Judas's purse, the palm leaves) Renaissance experimentation with depth of field, and emerging mannerism in the contra posto stances of Judas and the Romans and the contorted poses of the apostles.

Sage advice, per usual whig.

I'm terrified of retirement from work later this year.

As a young adult I was at workaholic in the software industry and hated it -- kept quitting jobs and searching for something else (should have learned a trade and become my own boss as I am now).

Worked through an interesting book called "Zen and The Art of Making a Living."

Just dug that out of storage during the past 30 years to review and try and regain & recapture that youthful inquisitiveness ... in search of new purpose
