Mrs. James Smith and Grandson, 1776
Charles Willson Peale Oil on canvas The American Experience in the Classroom (PDF file) In 1776 the American colonies were fighting to establish their independence from Great Britain. Campbell leans toward his grandmother, eager to show her what he has learned. He holds The Art of Speaking, a manual of rhetoric and oratorical study. Oratory, the art of formal public speaking, was a highly prized skill in colonial America, particularly for men hoping to enter politics or law. Campbell rests his finger on the famous soliloquy “To be, or not to be” from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Peale’s choice to have the book open to this passage can be interpreted in multiple ways. Perhaps the artist wished to allude to family aspirations for Campbell’s future — whether or not his education would prepare him for a career in law or politics. When we consider that the artwork was painted in Philadelphia in 1776, an added layer of meaning is revealed. “To be, or not to be” could refer to revolutionary ideals for a new nation. Peale, who was a lieutenant in the Philadelphia city militia, was well aware of the instability of the republic. .." 👍 A good lesson. 109 ... "Andrews was around for a long time. He usually played rather comic, Babbitt and businessman-blowhard types. But in an early Cheyenne, a rewrite of Treasure of the Sierra Madre, he did a great dramatic job as the equivalent of Bogart's Fred C. Dobbs."
Wolfus, I've noticed that. Those 1950s westerns, especially Have Gun, Will Travel, had actors who became well known. The roles were deep, even for a half hour show, and the actors were excellent at showing that depth. The difference between those roles and what became standard later is notable. I put a few episodes of Man From UNCLE and early Star Trek in that picture. PS: I think HG,WT was one of the best shows ever on television. Posted by: JTB at February 05, 2026 10:13 AM (yTvNw) 166

Still, I was absolutely stunned. I drove home and sat in my car in our garage for over an hour (still literally stunned as I've always been a high achiever who received rave reviews at work) before my wife incidentally came into the garage and asked what I was doing there. You no doubt understood that your job was to contribute to your employer's profitability, as normal people do. These journalists have cast themselves as heroic truthtellers and changemakers -- mere profitability is forgotten, or maybe even vulgar to them. Worse, they believe their political/cultural crusades should be funded by the rich owner at $100 million loss per year. Also, their going on social media to announce their every thought and feeling about this is hilarious. Did any of us who have been laid off think the work absolutely needed to know the details of the even, with status reports and group affirmation online? They are self-absorbed children. Any system can be gamed with sufficient application of bribes and jiggery-pokery. The system we have now - Iowa and New Hampshire caucuses and such - was a Democrat remedy to the “smoke filled back rooms” process used before 1968 or thereabouts iirc.
Carter and his team did their homework on how to work everything. A guy named Pat Caudell was on that, he enjoyed unfettered access to the Oval Office despite not having any particular appointment. He worked for Mr. Trump in 2016, subsequently passed away. I recall Mrs. Clinton was a lock for 2008 until Iowa. All my progressive cow-orkers working that were gobsmacked she got beat by the Obama machine. They had it all gamed out, bussing in “supporters” from out of state. Never knew what hit them. I was inclined to like this painting except for the damn eyes. Grandparents can have a wonderfully positive influence on a child. Certainly, mine did. Nana had little formal education beyond literacy and household math but she passed along history and a perspective, some derived from her own grandmother, that provided a wider picture of our town and the people in it. My grandfather loved to guide us in reading and math and practical skills. He would challenge but explain so even small children understood. What they taught and how they taught remains a positive part of my life even now.

Yanking *biden off the ballot last year and unceremoniously shoving Harris down the Democrat's throat probably didn't really polish her political cred. Her performance up to, and including the election demonstrated she's totally unprepared for office.

Posted by: ... at February 05, 2026 10:58 AM (AveBv) ====== And you are far too conspiratorial. No, they didn't expect Sanders to become a superstar. They had to actually make the DNC weaker in response to his near win. Super delegates went from being able to choose whom they wanted on the first ballot at the convention to only being able to vote their conscience on the second ballot because the Sanders fans were so pissed at what happened, especially in the face of the general election loss. I will put aside your unwarranted criticism and remind you it's only conspirstorial when you can't predict it in advance. I said all year last year it would be Kamala and that Biden would be shoved aside for her or forced through. No one else.
