Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - February 4, 2026 [TRex]

20260203-Bridgesof PIT.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety. Was it time 30 minutes earlier? No, it wasn't.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted. Pants are optional, but be advised that Virginia applies an additional tax to zippers. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

Breaking News: 150-year-old bottle of alcohol found in Utah, tasted by experts

An archaeological team in Utah exhumed a bottle of alcohol estimated to be 150 years old - and experts gave it a taste test.

Ian Wright, Utah's state public archaeologist, said the bottle was among thousands of artifacts dating back to approximately 1870-1890 found on U.S. Forest Service land used by Alta ski resort.

Wright said the find is the only known intact bottle of alcohol to be found from the time period.

Wright's team enlisted the help of High West, Utah's oldest legal distillery, to analyze the bottle's contents.

Isaac Winter, director of distilling at High West, was the first to taste the liquid.

"I had a little bit of trepidation going into it, but you have to try it," Winter told FOX 13 Utah. "It didn't smell like gasoline, didn't smell like tobacco spit."

He said the flavor is "fruity, there's a little bit of leather, there's quite a bit of age on it."

The experts said the liquid appears to be a low-alcohol beer, rather than liquor. They are now hoping to recreate the beverage.

Department of Music Trivia

Maybe I am late to the game but I just learned that the same guy wrote "Dazed and Confused," the Army recruiting jingle "Be All that You Can Be," and the "I'm a Pepper" jungle for Dr. Pepper.

Jake Holmes is that man. I didn't know the story behind Dazed and Confused either.

Per Wikipedia, Holmes recorded Dazed and Confused for his debut album "'The Above Ground Sound' of Jake Holmes" in June 1967. The album consists of songs played on bass and two electric guitars with no drummer.

The Yardbirds heard Holmes perform the song in August 1967 when Holmes opened for them at Greenwich Village's Village Theater. The Yardbirds reworked it with a new arrangement during the brief time that Jimmy Page was part of the band. It became a centerpiece of their tours.

In 1968, Page's new group Led Zeppelin recorded their own version of "Dazed and Confused" with new lyrics and vocal line. It was released on their debut album.

Holmes attempted to contact Page in the 1980s regarding the songwriting credit, but received no response. Starting in 2010, Holmes filed multiple lawsuits against Page for copyright infringement. In August 2025, the case was settled out of court and the terms remain confidential.

And now you know...

Trevi Fountain fee goes into effect as Rome seeks to manage tourist flow at celebrated water feature

Tourists hoping to get close to the Trevi Fountain had to pay 2 euros ($2.35) starting Monday as the city of Rome inaugurated a new fee structure to help raise money and control crowds at the one of the world's most celebrated waterworks.

"Before, there were problems accessing the fountain. There were a lot of people. Now, it's very easy," said Ilhan Musbah, a tourist from Morocco. "You can take photos, you feel good, you're comfortable, and on top of that 2 euros is not much."

The tourist fee was rolled out in conjunction with a new 5-euro (nearly $6) tourist ticket fee for some city museums. In both cases, Rome residents are exempt from the fees and the extra revenue will actually expand the number of city-run museums that are free for registered Roman residents.

"I think tourists were shocked by the fact that the city of Rome is only asking for 2 euros for a site of this level," Alessandro Onorato, Rome's assessor of tourism, said Monday. "I believe that if the Trevi Fountain were in New York, they would have charged at least $100."

58 NDH uodate:

Good evening.

I am thoroughly exhausted and, due to the amount of drugs in my system, I'm not always completely coherent. I experience holes in my memory, which they say will improve , and I'm finally doing some physical therapy, which has been hampered by a severe gout attack.

I was snatched back from the jaws of death and I wander, emotionally, through window to window in absolute amazement at the skill, determination, and compassion on display by those at Mayo Jacksonville.

I am alive. Against all odds, I am alive.

I haven't been able to read all the Twitter posts, and probably won't for a while, because everything exhausts me. I wanted to let you know that I'm doing well and that with the help of God, family, and friends such as you, I will make it.

Thank you for your prayers, for your conversations and inquiries, and for your donations to the gofundme. I told my daughter that the folks here at twitter are amazing people, and she now knows for herself, having read of your concern and compassion.

Thank you for supporting her with your kindness as she's made her most difficult journey.

It's not over yet. Following 1 to 2 weeks of additional rehab, Mistie will begin in-house care. I literally could not have survived without her and I am truly blessed to call her my daughter.

I promise that, alongside Mistie, I'll continue to provide updates, although simple updates may be all the energy that I can offer at this time.

Thank you, again, each and every one of you, for all that you've done to support us during this enormous life challenge.

May God Bless each and every one of you who are contending with your own health issues. I pray for you to good health soon.

63 The lunatics and neurotics used to be at least somewhat isolated. Now they can band together online, and re-inforce their hysteria. It has a synergistic effect, I’m quite certain. It’s sort of like giving hypochondriacs access to diagnostic medical manuals. There is also (obviously….) a longtime concerted effort to drive people crazy. They pretty much have it down to a science. Add into this mix modern pharmaceuticals, potent weed, bath salts, methamphetamine, etc. There may be some more or less chemical warfare and/or some electronic jiggery-pokery at work as well. The spooks have been working on that since the 1950s.

I love the song from Flashdance and need to play it this summer for my backyard deck dances with our grands! I can't sit still when I hear it. I dance alone while I make dinner and have some wine. Neighbors can't see me due to the trees!

I also love Led Zepplin. Who, boy, Plant was hot back then in jeans. Now not so much.

"Dazed and Confused" should have been my theme song the semester I had psych in nursing school. The professor and head of the nursing department told me I appeared to be in a "fugue state" when I kept declaring I did not understand. Altho I made an A for the course. Everyone laughed, including me, as I was clueless. I hated that semester! My bf/now husband would drive me to a nursing home for chronic psych patients and almost have to kick me out of the car. It was called "Wee Haven." Which is what we named all of our bedrooms. Nightmare.

I hated all psych classes I ever took and it seems like at least 3 others. While I lived with two male psych grad students the year prior, I never asked them to explain it to me because I wasn't interested.

I do wish I had their assessment of my psyche. Or maybe not.I know they discussed me in private.

dissects the Hollywood lockstep leftism on display at the Grammys on Sunday:

"If those people started saying, we support Trump, guess who's out? Yeah, you’re f*cking out."

"Whatever the subject, you guys, here's what it is. And this will prevent you from getting kicked out of the club."

"Now we're going to have an award show, and you get up there and whoever praises whatever your policies are the loudest-oh, and by the way, we hate Trump."

"So you got to say something sh*tty about him. And then something great about Black Lives Matter or whatever that thing is."

"Whoever does that the best is going to stay in the club the longest."

"So now you have a decision to make, you know, one of three things. You can either go up there and do ICE out and nobody's illegal. You’ll be fine."

“Or you can go up there and just be neutral, not say anything. But that will make people wonder if you should be in the club."

“Or you can touch that third rail and say you love ICE and love Trump, in which case you're 100% out and you're going to get booed off the stage."

130 Regarding the earlier article about Trump going soft on immigration... Who knows? Who really knows?

People are always outraged about something: Bondi, Patel, etc. I just don't know.

I do know I am not going to get myself in an uproar over nothing I can control. I do know that a lot are self deporting and who can count all of the little bastids? I want them GONE.

I read of a UK DM reporter who rode with ICE recently, in Minnesomoliland, and ICE got two criminals with no issue. How much is that going on we don't know about?

So far the possible illegal roofers in a rental down the street are still there, but much quieter than last summer. I want to yell ICE sometimes but never see them.

Stuff could be going on we don't know about due to no news propaganda. President Trump could be simply threading the needle with a steady hand.

Actually CPS puts the kids in custody in temporary foster care if there is thought to be a valid threat to them, and then there is an emergency meeting with an Administrative Law Judge, several case workers, and often LE to determine if it is safe for the children to remain at home, and what sort of oversight the family needs.

Honestly, for me, it's a mixed bag. I loved the steel mill scenes, the bar and the wedding/church scenes. Cimino shot the mill scenes in Mingo Junction and the bar scenes in the bar/bowling alley that my workmates and I frequented. Most of the extras in that were me and my buddies. (Free lunch and beer!!) The wedding and reception scenes were shot, iirc, in a Russian Orthodox church in the Cleveland area with a ton of locals. That part feels like home.

Much of the rest is 'eh'. I don't like Meryl Streep playing herself in any of her films. Always liked John Cazale and George Dzundza though.

Trump already got Minnesota to start cooperating with ICE allowing pick ups directly from county jails, meaning they can now safely send two guys to do a quick pick up of a prisoner already in custody instead of sending teams of agents into residential neighborhoods to look for these people after they are released.

It also allows us to have 700 agents picking up illegals in other areas of the country.

210 The American Embassy in Cuba is sending out a warning:

Embajada de los Estados Unidos en Cuba

@USEmbCuba
Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Havana, Cuba – February 3, 2026

Cuba’s national electrical grid is increasingly unstable and prolonged scheduled and unscheduled power outages are a daily occurrence across the country to include Havana. Outages affect water supply, lighting, refrigeration and communications.
There is also a shortage of fuel affecting transportation and resulting in long lines at gas stations. While some businesses, hotels, and hospitals use generators during power outages, they may not be able to maintain their services due to fuel shortages. Take precautions by conserving fuel, water, food and mobile phone charge, and be prepared for significant disruption. U.S. citizens in Cuba or planning to travel to Cuba are advised that there have been incidents of U.S. citizens being denied entry upon arrival as well as a spike in regime-sponsored protest activity directed at the United States, including anti-U.S. rhetoric.

Cuba has solar and wind but the majority of the grid is powered by Soviet era power plants that run off of Venezuelan bunker fuel. The USN seizing the tankers that would drop off partial loads put a crimp in that, and Pres Scheinbaum of MX decided to not to supply Havana with any oil at the moment, so the grid is going down. They don't have money to buy oil from anywhere else, and no other supplier will take promises and Cuban Pesos.

I have to give a shoutout here to my 66 Audio headphones, which identify to Bluetooth as 66 BT Sport. (My laptop did not come with BT, but that was easily solved with a cheap little USB dongle.) They have remained supremely comfortable for very long computer sessions for many years, a fact that I credit to their being designed for jogging and then used behind a desk.

So, they're very small and light, with a stiff little band that goes discretely behind the neck, and very comfortable little pads for the ears -- very open, not even remotely isolating, but you can't have everything and it was probably designed that way on purpose (for jogging safety). It's quieter for others than speakers, for sure.

The sound quality is sufficient that I don't notice it one way or another, which is good enough for me. I'm not trying to mix a recording here, just listen to music or watch a video. And it's nice to be untethered from the computer, free to walk around, but without hot, heavy cans on my head. Oh, and they're inexpensive too. Two thumbs up!

And the mechanism in the rear drums is good, as are the jacketed cables going forward to the frame points. Now the dash handle and its short cable have been made good.

Posted by: Tonypete

Heh, pretty much how I thought of DH too. I liked it but I think because the Mill scenes reminded me of home. Also, it was a unintended commercial for Rolling Rock beer when it was still brewed in Latrobe.

The vast majority of musicians flat out just can't step off the train. Once it's in your blood there's nothing you can do. Its part of your being. I know, I'm living it. I still play 3-4 hours a day, still buy guitars, amps, etc. I try to stay current. I still jam with people, jump up on stage if a friend's bands are playing, and if I find another good situation, I'm gone. I used to wonder about the big bands, how much frigging money do you need. I think that is a huge looming liability for owners of AI. The Trump situation is trivial since it’s been talked about so much by everyone - but sooner or later an AI is going to give out information that results in someone’s death, and there will be a huge precedent setting wrongful death lawsuit to come out of it.
If a jury decides to give a victim’s family $100 million out of some Big Corporation, that will focus everyone’s mind on making sure that AI is truthful.

I have to change my expansion tank on the boiler tomorrow if I can find one. There was a little water on the floor around the boiler, so I knocked on the pipe coming from the pressure release valve and water sprinkled out. I figured thats where it came from and put a small bucket under the pipe. Sure as shit when I got home there was water in the bucket and floor was dry. I knocked on the expansion tank *thud* like it was filled with sand. Not a good sign. Checked the schrader valve and a little water came out. Yup, toast. I got a shut off valve in the line to it, so it won't take much longer than changing a light bulb, but now I have to go out and search for one.

You won't find it at lowes or home depot, not that I would want anything they sold when its important. I have to hit a plumbing supply thats about 10 miles from here. I'll call first and see what they got, I would think they have to have one. If not I have to order it. I found a bell and gosset like I have now online for $100, but I would rather not wait, but they are supposedly very good. Plumbing supply usually always has good stuff, so I'll see what they got.

312 "Pellet monster" LOL!

Its only problem is (like all of us...) AGE. Got it 15 years ago. Parts are readily available and not terribly expensive. Came with an informative manual and troubleshooting guide. Not bad for the price.

It replaced an even earlier-made unit that truly sucked-- "used" when hubby installed it, had no identifying info on it & IMO poorly designed-- glad it's gone!

314 Hello, Horde! 😊💕

Sorry to be so late - I got a notification today that the Barry Manilow concert we were going to be attending on our Vegas trip in 2 weeks has been cancelled, so I have been trying to decide what to see in lieu of that. I'm really bummed, because I was looking forward to seeing him one last time, but the man IS recovering from lung cancer surgery, and he is in his 80's, so "It's a Miracle" that he is still performing at all.

We settled on the Cirque du Soleil show "O" at the Bellagio - looks intriguing, and we were able to get primo seats AND dinner at a restaurant at the resort with premium seating to see the fountain show for less than what we originally paid for the Manilow concert by itself.

Still bummed, though - I am one of the original Fanilow girls from way back when....

318 Speculating that private audience MN had with Homan didn't go the way they anticipated.
Went something like this:

Tom Homan just ERUPTED in response to the left-wing media using children to protest ICE 🫳🏻🎤

"Why don't you show the funeral of Rachel Morin!? Why don't you listen to the 19 minutes of Laken Riley fighting for her life?!"

"For 19 minutes she fought for every breath, fought to survive. How terrified these young women were to be r*ped and m*rdered. How about THAT?"

"How about we educate these children on President Trump making his country safe again? How about we educate the children on the last administration half a million children were smuggled in this country, they lost track of 300,000 of them, and President Trump found 145,000 of them!"

"145,000 children the last administration wasn't even LOOKING for. Why don't we talk about the quarter million Americans died from fentanyl across the open border?"

"Why don't we talk about the record number of known suspected terrorists across that border? Or the historic increase in s*x trafficking in women and children?"

"Let's talk about that. President Trump's saving lives every day!"

You'll come back a changed person. lol Booze? They drank the frigging ship dry before it left port. Started boarding at 11am, by 4-5pm we got delayed on our departure because they needed an emergency resupply. Drank...the..ship...dry. You know how hard that is to do? I talked to the captain one time. Flat out said it was his favorite cruise. They sell more booze in those 4 days than they do in 6-7 weeks of normal cruises combined. His exact words- No fights, nobody in the brig, no complaints, everybody has a great time, the crew is volunteer, and they break all booze records.
